"Oh my god you stupid b***h I knew that." But he was grinning a little as if suppressing (badly) a laugh. "Fine, whatever, most points wins." Jack was nothing if not a fast learner, especially since the track was remarkably easy and short. Although he did have issues with ******** mole holes!" —which was a common cry throughout the race. But he managed fourth place and had one shiny point to show for his efforts. He passed Chel a smug look.

Chel clapped and said, "Oooh fourth place wow I'm so proud." Still, she'd come in fifth, so maybe she shouldn't have been sassing him. Too much time spent watching Jack freak out like a little kid. At the very least, she was still ahead of him in terms of total points, so that was good.
The cutscene began for the next track, the Koopa Troopa beach. "Aw s**t, I hate this one." Two beers down and she was starting to feel at least slightly buzzed. "It's got sand and water and s**t so it's hard." She didn't show any signs of letting Jack win though.
Especially when she had a trump card. As the race began, she casually said, "So are you gonna tell me about your secret lady love or am I not privvy to special Jack info?"

Jack, who had been attempting to find the right timing to do this physics finger giving speed boost at the start, was caught off guard by the question and fumbled the opportunity. "Mario, you little jackass. What?" he asked distractedly, his eyes glued to the screen.

"Your secret affair lady. You hung up on the phone when I mentioned it," she said, "Remember? I found her shoes in your closet."
She shrugged and said, "If you don't wanna tell me it's cool. I just wanna know so I can guard your secret and s**t. Is it Hanna? You two are so similar it's kind of freaky I think-" Chel didn't even notice she was losing- Jack's affair was more important.

He didn't answer for a while, intent on the race. The koopas were annoying enough, but he kept hitting the water just when he thought he was getting the hang of the course. The fact that both of them sucked in the end didn't make him feel much better. "You aren't goin' to mention those to anyone," Jack eventually replied, draining the rest of the beer and shaking the can at her. More. "Because I swear to god if you do, you won't have to worry about Evan anymore because I'll kill you myself. Understand?" chiickadee DDD : troll dice says don't drink and drive

Chel was starting to get slightly annoyed that she was doing so badly. She'd owned this game for ages- it shouldn't have been this bad! Normally she pulled first and seconds so this was downright shameful. She frowned at Jack's response, not at the oddness but at the fact that he didn't trust her. "Hey, only person I run my mouth to is you." She followed his wordless instruction and moved to the kitchen to get him another, because she was and always would be his lapdog before anything else. "Come on, can't I just know who they belong to," she whined, "Like I need to know who managed to whoo the brick wall beanstalk." Her pout was distinct as she returned to her cushion, squishing herself to the point where the was leaning on him and she handed over the beer. "Pleeeeeease?"

His mouth twitched at the statement like he might have smiled, but his gaze was still fixed on the scoreboard, specifically on his one single point. He debated for what felt like a long time but which was only really a very stretched out fifteen seconds. "They're mine," he muttered at length. Then Jack snatched the beer and drank heavily.

"They're ... yours?" she asked, confused. Her tone was merely inquisitive, not patronizing. If they were his she didn't think it funny or blackmail material, just an unexpected fact about Jack.

He drank for six solid seconds, stopped, and coughed when some of the beer went down the wrong pipe. "Yeah." Jack was finally settling into a good and toasty state, which dulled the ache of embarrassment, though the dark expression aimed at the tv was as broody as ever. He waited for Chel to burst into laughter and start the name calling.

"Huh." Chel mulled over this newfound information. She supposed this was the part where she gloated about her new blackmail material, but honestly the drive just wasn't there. "Well we can always go shoe shopping together so you don't have to go alone and feel weird," Chel said with a shrug. "I ******** hate heels so I guess it kind of fits." THEN came the laugh, at her own joke.
He was looking so angsty and dark that Chel couldn't help but reach out and rustle his hair a little, messing up the tangled blonde locks. "Earth to tall, dark and batman. Seriously, I'm not gonna tell. Won't even mention it after this. Promise." Promises to Chel were serious business.

Making an indignant noise, he swatted her hand away and started fixing his hair. " Shoe shopping," Jack said ruefully. "Craft, have you seen me? I'm a freak. Most stores don't carry my goddamn freak size. Have to special order online and s**t. Shoe shopping," he repeated with a derisive snort. He didn't say thanks for promising to keep the secret, but he didn't look quite as broody afterwards. Even though he was still confused as to why Chel wasn't taking this golden opportunity to get him back for all the times held made fun of her. "We gonna finish this?" he prompted with a wiggle of the controller.

"Oh that's right, you must have monster feet. Damn. Well you can still always ask if you ever want to," she said with a shrug. The offer would always be on the table.
Having completely forgotten the TV, she said, "Oh! Yeah." The next one was the Kalimari Desert, as the cutscene displayed. "Oh s**t I didn't even remember this existed. I think there's like a train or something."
She slumped off of Jack and returned to being a foot or so from him, giving him the distance he always required. "Well good. I was worried you had gone and gotten a girlfriend without me," she chirped happily as the race started. Then all was silent (for once) as she actually focused on the game and got a relatively decent placing.

"I did," he corrected her lazily, just before the countdown, and sat up now that she wasn't leaning on him. "Sort of. Trying things with Hanna." This time, Jack managed to get the speed boost timing and rocketed ahead, though there was none of his running commentary like before. He still looked pretty intense focusing on the race, but at best he muttered every once in a while. There was no real explanation as to how he stayed in first place, but it seemed to be a combination of luck (like avoiding the train before it crossed the path) and loosening up. The scoreboard came up and awarded him 9 points for first place, which was a bizarre choice to him, but it put him at 10 points so he couldn't complain. chiickadee apparently the more drunk he is the better he is at this neutral

As the final race ended, Chel pulled a hair tie off her wrist with a satisfying snap, and began tying her hair up and out of her face. She stared in disbelief as Jack managed to beat her by one point. That was so just her luck.
Sadly, neither of them even scored enough points for first, second, or third, so they both watched a pitiful cutscene of the other characters winning.
"Wait what????" Chel said, ignoring the TV and returning to her too-close position. "You and Hanna?!!" She put a hand to her mouth in shock, leaning away from him for a moment. "But you- wait like is it serious?"
This was news.

A win by one point was still a win. Jack waved the controller with a short-lived sense of satisfaction. After setting it back down, though, he leaned away with a grumpy look now that she was getting in his space again and remained so even as she pulled away.
"No," he said flatly, which was the truth as far as he was concerned. "I was doing it to stop the guys from throwing me into blind dates, but it's not working, so..." He probably shouldn't have said that aloud. It wasn't like Hanna wasn't aware of it--hell, she had been the one to plant the idea in the first place--but the alcohol made his lips loose.
