"You took a nasty risk coming here. Why?" What if he'd been caught? Imagine the consequences; on Ripley, and the people he knew. "For a slab of stone?"

"It's important to me." He answered slowly. Yes, he understood it was a risk, and a massive one, but he had to. "Why do you think we drove so long to get here?" And why, when they crossed the town border, it was dark.

"Fair enough.." He went quiet for a moment. "Was it worth it? Got what you wanted out of it?"

"Does it matter?"

"Would I ask if it didn't? I'm curious."

He frowned at the road, but didn't answer right away. Instead he mulled over the question, since he was in the habit of at least trying to be as honest as possible. Did he get what he wanted out of it? Was it worth the risk? Sure, he felt a little better after visiting, but he raised more questions to himself...and then, seeing his own grave...

"I'm not sure."

Surprisingly, that satisfied Otto's curiosity enough not to push that issue too much.

"I don't think I could do it. Go back home I mean. I don't wanna know what life is like there without me. As long as I never see it, I never gotta face what I did." Running away was the right choice to him back then. He stood by it. Any after effects of his actions were not to be seen by him.

"I sually avoid the grave yard at Deus. I went once, to visit friends that died. Never doing that again.."

"Do you regret it?" He piped up just after he eluded to doing facing what he did; in his mind, he imagined it equated to turning his back on his family, and running into the sharp, needle-ridden arms of Deus.

"I'm sorry about your friend." And he meant it; he remembered the stint with Nevada, after all. It was harsh on the kid, and entirely regretful from his point of view.

"A little.. I've had years to think about my life. Now that I've had that time.. I feel like I could have handled it better. That dinky town wasn't the whole world. A couple years, and I'd be somewhere else, yanno?" Otto stared out the window, gaze tiredly examining his reflection in the glass. "But I made the choice, even if I was bein' rash. There's no changin' it. Besides... I'm only able to think this way cause Deus changed me."

Ripley's condolences were met with brief silence. Nevada. She wasn't the only one. She hurt the most, but she was one of a handful of good friends gone.

"Yeah..." He murmured, resting his forehead against the glass. "Comes with the territory." He should have learned not to get attached. But life wasn't worth living if he couldn't become close to those he loved. It hurt to lose them, but the time he got with his loved ones made his dark and miserable life the most worth while.

"I tried telling you that, you know." He admitted quietly, after a lengthy pause as he thought about what was being said. "That's very mature of you." He also admitted, though it wasn't much of a surprise; Otto had changed a lot since he had seen - or even heard from - him last.

"It does." He shook his head a bit, and began to turn the car towards an on-ramp.

"You did. But even I know I was in too deep to hear you then." Too deep into his darkness and misery. The pain of living in that house. The torment his mind and heart endured. His patience thinned. His temper roared.

His compliment was not lost on him. Otto took it in and kept it safe. Mature.. That was nice to hear.

"You weren't around all that long, back then. But.. stuff you said and did for me.. it helped a little."

"You were young." He brushed it off, because it was true; teenagers had it rough already with the changes, and add to the mix of his situation and place, well...he didn't blame him for how he acted, at least not too much. The admittance - or perhaps it was a strange compliment? - made a small smile form on his lips.

"I'm glad." It was all he said at first, again thinking back on that time. The trips to the movies. The quiet times in their shared room. The occasional walk. It had been so little, but it had been a change of pace for them both. "I was just glad you spent time with me." It was easy to admit now that years had passed. It had been horribly lonely, being in a place where he knew nobody for several months on end. He had done it for his career, but...it had still been lonely.

"Seriously? I had to have been shitty company." Otto smirked, leaning back in his chair now. "Weren't like I had many options either. It was hang out with you or hang out in a farmer's field." That was a small lie. He could have easily left Ripley to stew in his loneliness, ignore him for his own hobbies. But they mutually had needed one another then.

"I was just glad you weren't a total kiss butt to my dad."

The teen stretched, a loud yawn escaping him. "We almost there?"
PostPosted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 6:08 pm

"I always thought you'd have more fun in the field." He hadn't been - an arguably still wasn't - the best company. Between his serious demeanour, future career and school, there was little room left for personality. "...and your Dad couldn't advance my career." Ripley said seriously - so seriously it was hard to tell if he was joking or not.

He probably wasn't.

"Almost." They were still speeding down the highway, but the signs pointed towards the next town being only a few kilometres away.

Otto gave Ripley the most intense stare, trying to drill holes into his brain to figure out if that had been a joke or not.

He soon gave up and turned the music back on.
