For the first time in what seemed like years Jasper laughed with joy and threw the ball for his excited companion. He watched the old dog run for the ball with glee, knowing full well that he couldn't run as fast as he used to but it was nice to see Fido so carefree, even for just a few seconds. "Alright bring me the ball!!" he called, patting his legs eagerly.

Fido ran for the ball, locating it and bringing it back to Jasper after a few minutes. He was already tired, for some reason, but he was still eager to catch again. The collie dropped the ball onto his master's open hand and waited for the object to be thrown again.

Jasper saw the poor old man's harsh breathing but still smiled and even laughed a little, knowing his best friend was enjoying himself. "Not as young as you once were huh?" he asked happily, allowing the dog to rest for a few moments before throwing the ball again, although he didn't throw it as far this time. They played off and on for a couple hours, Jasper allowed his friend to rest for lengthy periods and regain his strength before they continued. The sun just started to set and they were both tired, he didn't want the day to end but it was time they found a new home. "Alright buddy, enough rest.....we need to find someplace to sleep for the night." he said after some time of laying on the ground and staring at the clouds.

Fido barked in agreement and got up to move to the town. They could possibly sleep on a free couch or a bench. Then again, maybe there were others who would have taken those spots already. They could sleep under the bridge again. The collie wouldn't mind being his master's blanket for the night. He himself had plenty of fur.
Suddenly, he found that he had to sit down. He worried that he might be dying, but hoped it was just because he used too much energy. When he started to get dizzy, he became even more worried and began to whine.

Jasper saw his friend struggle and gave a small laugh. "I guess I wore you out too much, huh? Come on, we'll go back to our old home and find a new one tomorrow. I think it's time to go to bed early today." he said softly, picking his friend up into his arms and carrying him back to their ransacked home with the torn mattress. "There we go, thats better." he said, gently setting Fido on the bed and laying next to him.

Fido moved as close to Jasper as was possible if only to cover him with some fur. Tiredly, he rested his head on the boy's chest. He hoped that he would be able to wake up tomorrow. Maybe at least stay alive long enough to see his master get a new home. "Let's get a new place soon."

Jasper smiled and slowly drifted off to sleep with his loyal friend on his chest, Fido was the perfect heater to keep him warm but it wasn't so much fun in the summer. Jasper wrapped his arms around Fido and sighed deeply at the comfort of another warm body.

Fido quickly fell asleep as well and was the first to wake up in the morning. For some reason, he was still quite tired despite having just slept. He hardly even had the energy to lift his own head. Was his age catching up to him? Or maybe it was the homeless lifestyle taking its toll. He couldn't tell.

Jasper woke up a while after Fido and groaned at the sunlight stinging his eyes. "Damn sun...." he groaned, running his fingers through Fido's fur, scratching his ears a little. "Hey.....it's time to wake up." he mumbled softly as he tried to wake himself up. "Fido....?" he said softly, noticing his companion didn't respond to his first comment, but he was an old dog and sometimes took a few minutes to decide whether or not to be awake.

Fido whimpered and weakly lifted up a paw for Jasper to take. "Help me up," he requested, trying to at least sit up. He was a bit scared. Maybe this was just a false alarm and he was worried for no reason. Too much worry couldn't be good for his health. "Help me up so we can find a new place."

Jasper grew more concerned for his poor friend's health. "Fido? What's wrong?" he asked worriedly as he massaged the old dog's paw gently and sat up straighter to better examine the canine. "I don't think I wore you out this much yesterday." he mumbled to himself, using his hands to press gently but firmly against the dog's head, neck, spine, ribs, hips, basically everywhere to see if anything hurt.

Everything was a bit sore, Fido noticed, and he groaned a bit when Jasper pressed on certain painful areas. Perhaps he was just too old to play catch, he figured to himself. "Help me up," he requested again. Suddenly, he felt sick and nauseous, but there was nothing to expel from his system. "No, not yet!" He started to howl, terrified. "I'm not ready!"

"Fidophilas!" Jasper cried in a panic when he heard the dog howl in pain. "Hang on there buddy!" He said softly, picking the dog up and running out to the sidewalk where the main road was. If he remembered correctly there should be a veterinarian somewhere nearby, they might help. Jasper ran as fast as he could with his friend in his arms, hoping the dog would at least stay alive until he got there but the vet's office was pretty far from here.

Fido could feel his vision fading. "I can't leave! Please! He still needs me!" he begged whatever higher power could hear him. "I don't wanna die!" He began to feel dizzy and confused. What was happening now? Why couldn't he recall?"There is a way."Fido turned to look for whoever spoke to him, but saw no one. His life was leaving. "What? What is it?!""I will tell you in a second."All went black.

Jasper finally reached the vets office, bursting through the doors and going right to the front desk with his lifeless dog in his arms. "Please you have to help me! I don't know what's wrong with him!!" he said in a panic. The receptionist ushered him into a room right away and found a veterinarian to examine the dog. The doctor placed her stethoscope against the dog's chest but didn't hear a heartbeat. "He's got no heartbeat." she said as she began to perform CPR on the canine with a breathing mask while the technicians tried to put oxygen tubes down the dog's throat to help him breathe.Jasper was beside himself and prayed to anyone who would listen to let his dog live just a little longer, He had never been on his own in the city before and he couldn't imagine his life without his faithful companion at his side.The doctor continued CPR for about five minutes but stopped when she realized the time and gave a heavy sigh. She asked the technicians to give them some privacy before turning toward Jasper with a heartbroken expression. "I'm very sorry sir but.....I'm afraid he's passed." she said softly. "I'll leave you two alone so you can say goodbye. But I must know what your intentions are for his body." Jasper stopped breathing when the doctor mentioned Fido was dead. The only friend he ever knew was gone forever. He forced himself to take a breath at the doctor's question and closed his eyes to allow a steady stream of tears to flow. "I'll bury him myself. I know just the place." he said softly, forcing a slight smile as he scooped his lifeless dog into his arms, once the tubes were removed. Jasper walked out of that clinic's office ever so slowly and was enveloped in the crying expressions of the rest of the patients owners.
