I have not read anne rice's vamp books only her witching hour trilogy and the first book was so confusing it took like 5 chapters for me to fully understand what she was getting at. my 20yr old just finished her beauty series and thoroughly enjoyed that one but i do have to say i definatle prefer lkh overall but she should do more than just overdone sex for 20- 40 pages at a time and give us some juicey story to go with it and bring edward back for a bit and let us know whats up with his life !! 4laugh

I'm curious about what you all think. Do you LOVE LKH but despise Anne Rice or are you impartial question exclaim

Personally, I'm not a fan of Anne Rice's writing style, its too drawn out for me. She takes too long to describe something that needs 2-3 words or maybe a full sentence. If I look past her drawn out style, her World is too boring for me. I just don't feel the depth that Laurell K. Hamilton has.

Style wise, I feel Laurell K. Hamilton is a superior author because of the depth of EVERYTHING. From main characters to thee most minor, they all have a realism about them. As much as I dislike Gill the were-fox, I got a sense of how real his fear & terror were, in Narcissus in Chains. I almost felt bad for him, still wanted someone to shoot him though twisted As imaginative as her World is, I just can identify easier with her storytelling ability & writing prowess

I completely agree! I just couldn't get into Anne...I read the first chapter of interview with a vampire and it was like pulling teeth...I was hooked on LKH from the first paragraph of GP and can't get enough!

Such is life I suppose

I like LKH best. I have read a little of ARs stuff and she is harder for me to get into. I like her work thought.

What is shameful is I perfer the nonstop sex in LKH than the depression I get from AR. And the non stop sex chapters get on my nerves so much I skim them to get some action or violence. So its the lesser of two evils in my case.

While LKH is disappointing me as a person/author, Anne Rice didn't take me too far into her series. I probably read three of her books, and that's it.

LKH is a good author, as she takes time to make sure she knows what she's writing about...

Which really just makes it all the worse in the end.

I tried Anne Rice too but I dunno what it was, I couldn't get into it. The first LKH book I read was Obsidian Butterfly, so maybe I spoiled myself

I find Anne Rice dry. She's well written, lots of details, and has memorable, if not loveable, characters. But, I've only been able to force myself through two books, Vittorio the Vampire (which was very good) and Queen of the Damned (god the movie was total crap compared to the book as always). I got halfway through The Vampire Lestat before something more interesting dsitracted me. I tried picking it up again, but I couldn't find the place where I left off and I did NOT want to start all over again.

LKH has humor in her books and I like comedy. I find her easier to read because of her style, she's descriptive but doesn't wax philosophically on everything (not that Rice does). Though, I have to admit, if I read another freaking line about Merry Gentry's "ruby-spun sidhe hair" I might just write a fanfiction short all about ripping it out. Then add a comic. Then turn one of those barber shop barbies into a Merry and have at it on video, post it on youtube, and let the world know my annoyance!!!! twisted

I love Anne Rice, both the vampire novels and the witching hour books. But LKH got first place after I read the first couple novels.

I have a question, to all the people who like LKH but dislike Anne Rice. Which books did you read first?
I've noticed among my freinds, if they read LKH first they couldn't stand Anne. But reading Anne first they liked her and kept liking her even though liking LKH more.

Maybe you just have to not have read LKH in order to like Anne Rice? xd

I think most people can't get into Anne because her books are almost history lessons. She takes her vampires and gives them complete histories. I think that's pretty great but I know it's not something a lot of people can stay interested in.. Like history class xP

Not to mention it's all overly romanticized. While Laurell's books are more modern in language and details. Also, besides being a tale about supernatural characters Laurell's stories involve crimes and mysteries. Sometimes it's more entertaining to read about catching a serial killer than someone's melodramatic life.

I've already stated countless times that I like both but like Anne more. I don't think it's because I read her first (which I think is an interesting theory) but because I'm into that sort of stuff. Which series I'd grab first depends on my mood. When I want some "mindless" entertainment I'll read Anita since it's usually light and full of crime scenes. When I want to feel spirited away I'll read Anne since it's "heavy" and dramatic in a classic sense of the word.

I haven't read anything LKH related in a long time now redface

I've been reading a lot of Sun Tzu, Niccolo Machiavelli, Friedrich Nietzsche, more philosophy than fantasy sweatdrop
