Oh – oh no! He hadn’t intended for… Was Ginger Beer all right?

There was a strange, tight clench in his chest at the well-timed slap, as the dappled green toppled and rolled – that hadn’t been necessary, she hadn’t been hurting anyone, there was no need to hit her! Bakarn stepped forward, then another step, heedless of the danger of getting too close to Roar.

Ginger Beer- Blyth – Blyth? – she looked up at him and her eyes were rainbow. Oh. Good. She’d Impressed, good for her, she was safe now, nobody would hurt her - Hey, Bakarn? Will you play with your Blyth? I don’t think she really gets it.

Oh.

Oh.

I’m upside down, Blyth added helpfully. But I’m okay!

His face split into the dumbest fardling grin, and he didn’t so much rush in as pounce on his dragon, tickling her exposed and vulnerable belly mercilessly. Blyth squealed and flailed, then flopped on him in a tangle of limbs and wings and merciless cuddling. “Fardles, you ninny, you had me worried there!”

I’m sorry, Bakarn! Oh, tell the boy I’m sorry I knocked him down? I didn’t mean to!

Bakarn, still on the ground with his arms (and torso) covered in baby dragon, smiled slightly dazedly up at Kidder. “Hey, yeah. She says she’s sorry for runnin’ you over, also.” A little cuddle-squeeze for his dragon, and then he twisted around so that he could affix Seytev with a bright-eyed, bewildered glance. “Look, Sey – her name is Blyth.”

The dragonets had separated, much to a sigh of relief from Deruvene, and even better it looked as though one of them Impressed to...Bakarn? Yes, Bakarn, he was pretty sure that was his name. They'd shadowed one another on the Touching sands and it was wonderful to see someone properly Impress. There was yet to be insane amounts of blood on the sands (he'd fuss at Kidder later with all the proper amounts of worry) but for now he was super pleased as a stuffed dragon to see someone matched off. A lovely green for someone he assumed to be just as lovely.

Alcine seemed no worse for the wear as another youth joined them (a buddy of the new rider? He really needed to catch up on people, he was so behind. Gift baskets were needed) and so he patted the young woman on the shoulder. "I'm gonna move back a bit, just in case she decides to come running through again. If you need me I will be at your side." A look to Seytev had him basically saying the same thing. He'd be there if they needed him - just what for was the question.

As the pair of greens tussled other eggs in the clutch began to move a little more too; the Listening Egg was in fact rocking and shaking quite impressively but the colourful shell showed no sign of breaking.

The dull grey Commander Egg on the other hand went from rock still to crumbling apart in the blink of an eye. The dragon that picked itself up without fuss from amongst the pieces was unmistakably a blue; his hide was deep and rich, gleaming with the wetness of egg fluids. Having found his feet the hatchling scanned the gaggle of candidates with dull blue eyes, which flickered ever so slightly brighter for a moment as he saw his sister Impress. Having inspected the robed humans on the sands he made a careful study of all the entrances to the sands, then of the spectators, the healers at the side of the sands, and finally his mother and the his as yet unhatched siblings.

Apparently reasonably satisfied by what he saw - or did not see? - the blue stretched out and... well, his wings went on stretching for quite some time. The Commander gave his huge pinions a couple of wet flaps before settling them down by his flanks; their size all folded up gave his conformation an oddly bulky, almost untidy appearance but they were out of the way and he didn't seem troubled. After a last glance at the eggs and a nod up at Hiraeth he began to pace steadily and purposefully towards the candidates.

Yevalee drifted slightly towards the cluster, careful not to move too fast and stopped, just listening. Everyone was standing up, there hadn't been a horrible mauling, he breathed a bit easier. Until Bakarn pounced? Jumped? the second upside down green and ahh.

Really, did he have to give him a heart attack. For a moment he thought the other had lost his mind. Bakarn had impressed? Good for him.

Well. Apparently she didn't need his help. That was...that was good, then. Seytev could focus on the pair of hatchlings still tussling on the Sands. The first green, the larger one, had sent the smaller, patchy one tumbling, and Seytev winced. That was...rough.

And then Bakarn, oh Faranth, Bakarn, you stupid boy, started walking toward the hatchlings, and - "Shardit, 'Karn," he hissed, taking a step after his friend with the intent of dragging him back should it get bad, but...it didn't.

It didn't get bad at all.

Bakarn was...rushing forward and pouncing on the green, rubbing her belly (tickling her belly?) and the green's eyes were rainbow, and then - well. Faranth. "Wow," he murmured, listening to Bakarn talking to the green and trying to work out how he felt about it. He was happy, that was a definite, but it was that weird kind of happiness where you were a little worried. For a moment, anxiously, Seytev's mind flashed back to the conversation they'd had a few nights before. But they'd...make everything work. That was what Bakarn had said.

And then Bakarn was looking back at him, cuddling the dragon, and talking to him. And any anxiety he might have had evaporated. Bakarn had a dragon. "...Oh, Faranth," he said, returning that glance with a grin. "Blyth. Congrats, 'Karn!"

The Commander blue went unnoticed.

There it was, that rainbow whorl again. Alcine looked from the green hatching to its point of interest, and spying Bakarn's expression, made a few guesses as to who the newly minted rider was. She would have taken more time to congratulate Bakarn in person, but Hear Me Roar was trudging for the other candidates, and Alcine was quick to give the green a wide berth, in case she felt like testing for weak-willed candidates again. She nodded towards Deruvene, her expression stoic as the two of them parted ways, and then she glanced around her, thinking for a moment about the best place to stand.

Inching over towards Kidder (lightning rarely struck twice, right?), Alcine looked the roughshod candidate up and down once before keeping her eyes on the eggs, her expression serious. "Someone's going to have battle scars," she remarked, possibly even jokingly.

Her eyes followed the sound of cracking eggshell, and she watched as the Commander egg crumbled to rubble, leaving behind a bulky blue. He seemed to have less energy than either of his sisters, and for that Alcine was grateful--perhaps this one would find his without needing to barrel into anyone else.

-------------------------

"Look at them, Venk, they're beautiful and healthy," Shylla cooed, watching with her chin rested in one hand adoringly. She'd been with the Weyrmaster all day, and when Hiraeth had begun to hum Evmeth was one of the first to join the chorus, as dutiful a daughter as she could be. They'd watched the candidates file in, the crowds file in, and the first egg crack, all with an air of tension and unease after the stress of the Touching. But all of that seemed to change when Shylla caught sight of those beautiful little eyes, thinking back to the first time she'd truly seen them for herself.

"You've done it," she reaffirmed, leaning into the man with a soft hug at one of his arms. "You and Hiraeth both. Just a little longer, and then all she has to do is recover."

Two down, six to go.

"Not her fault... Well only partially hers... Didn't think I would have to dodge both of them at once..." Kidder muttered, though Bakarn was otherwise occupied. Oh and there was a handsome blue... He'd be a sight in the air, Kidder was pretty sure. Tasking his time though which was fine... No need to upset Roar again.

" I'll just have to make up a more impressive story about how I came by them...
" He joked to Alcine.

Jasiline waved when she heard her name called. "Hey Brishen!" She scooted on her bench to make room for her fellow Weyrling. She paid no mind to the man making rude passive aggressive noises on her other side as she not so gently intruded on his space. "Hah! How could I miss her. Pale little thing, but even Sanuyeth had to comment."

The tumbling of dragonets was fairly normal and she watched with half an eye as she talked. It was a fine thing to see from the safety of the Stands but it wouldn't get interesting unless there was blood. Jasiline chuckled again. "Hah. Even the way she attacked when the other one wasn't looking. There's no mistaking that one's cut of the same cloth." There was almost pride in her voice.

She whistled in surprise a moment later. "Shells!... Lookit the wings on that one!" She pointed down to the Commander blue on the Sands.

“Haz even agrees with you.” Brishen sat down next to Jasiline, feeling the cheerful touch of his dragon in the back of his mind. “Hasn’t even been a turn and there’s a second clutch on the sands.” It was exciting and so unusual with one hatching early. “And how did he get those folded up in that egg?”

That blue had some honking big wings. Steady at least. “That makes what? Two impressed, two hatched?” So many candidates and such a tiny clutch. “Think she’ll maul someone before she impresses?”
PostPosted: Sat May 24, 2014 6:13 pm

"Just one's Impressed so far- Oh. Right! Yeah. Two and a green and blue out... that makes what, two greens, a blue and a brown so far. With that big one being a green I doubt we'll see a metallic out of this clutch but that's no hide off my back. So far none of these seem inclined to take a fit at least. As long as they aren't all duds or... like the brown... I'd say that's a good thing."

Jasiline watched the two hatchlings currently on the Sands. "I'd be disappointed if she didn't! Girl's got spunk. I don't see accidentally rolling over a couple doing it for her."

Hear Me Roar ignored the new hatchling behind her, instead turning her head to inspect the candidates once more… now that she was done being so rudely interrupted. The young green circled around the candidates, and it was only when she came around the other side that she seemed to notice him. There was a ‘kraaaark’ of recognition, and a display of bared baby teeth - and then she turned around and went straight for Yevalee at a run.

“If they don’t kill my other children first” Venk said grimly, then relented a little, relaxing. None of the candidates had done anything stupid, or tried to pet a baby dragon. Even the aggressive green seemed more interested in scaring them then actually harming them… though there was something slightly off about the way she sounded that had him on edge. “Faranth, Shylla, I meant what I said - we can’t do this again. It'll kill both of us”

He leaned into the hug though, because it was kind… and right now, he needed kind.

"I think getting mowed over by a dragonet is a reasonable story," Alcine responded to Kidder, watching the green stalk the other candidates. The blue seemed mostly inactive, which was a welcome relief: in larger hatchings, where multiple active dragons moved about, things were quick to devolve to chaos.

Not that the small hatching deterred Hear Me Roar, who went charging for one of the boys on the opposite end of the clutch. Alcine's eyes widened and she muttered an expletive under her breath, but made no other attempts to move for Yevalee. The boy was on his own for this one.

-----------------------

"Everything will be fine," Shylla repeated, gesturing to the sands, where all of the candidates were standing whole and (largely) unharmed. "They're smart children, capable ones, and they wouldn't be where they are without you." She squeezed him arm as he leaned into the hug, watching the blue fall free of his shell as she thought. "No one's going to put your or Hiraeth's health in danger ever again," she affirmed, a bit of raw anger in the back of her throat. "I don't care what those huffy wingleaders say, you deserve your rest."

And then the green went charging, and Shylla's stiffness instantly dissolved into surprise and worry, leaning forward to get a better view. Shaff it, little one, you're not helping my case!

Shylla huffed, glancing up at her dragon in the rafters. It's okay, Evmeth, I'm sure she's hearing more colorful language from Yevalee.

“None of them’s dead yet?” L’ris swung onto the bench next to C’tis, the older rider having taken her time to get there - for once, she didn’t have a dog in this fight. The woman had no squire at the moment, which was something she was a little grateful for - a break, a little time to think. She still felt she was getting old, but would violently resist any attempt to try and take her away from her job. “I needn’t have hurried”

Aeglentine fell into the seat next to Vanavia, the gangly candidate a little out of breath: combat training had that effect on her, and though she’d been in a hurry to get here… well, it took her a moment to compose herself, smoothing down her uniform and folding her hands in her lap.

“What did I miss? Are - did anyone Impress? Who?"

"Oooooh." Deruvene had to press a finger to his mouth to silence himself from making more noise on the sands. Sure there was chatter here and there as Candidates scattered out of the way of the green, and certainly there was rumbles of awe from the beautiful new blue that had hatched. He didn't really have time to marvel at it, not with a green charging at someone, and Deruvene felt himself shift in that direction.

No, don't run to try and get him. You won't be faster than the dragonet and will likely get you both hurt.

A bit of panic was coming over him. He'd been okay with Kidder and Alcine getting knocked down, mostly because the dragonets had been more interested in one another than them, but this time the little green clearly had a target. S'ol would be really angry at him if he moved and tried to do something, but he'd probably be more angry at himself if he stood by and did nothing. Deruvene released a little bit of a whine as he looked back and forth from the dragonet moving towards the stands, where he assumed S'ol was sitting. What should he do?

Whatever the hell Yevalle had done or said while she was in the shell, Roar seemed to have taken a unique form of her particular sort of interest in him... And by interest he meant "probably going to bite him"... Which... Well frankly Kidder was more or less ok with as potential mailings went. Anything to get that self satisfied look off the boys face. Or maybe make him less pretty so he might actually stop and think that maybe there was more to someone disliking him than their 'obvious' surpressed desire to be carnal with rich, spoiled holder boys.

"Oh this will be something..." He almost purred, delicately trying to rush sand away from a scratch. The blood and sand caked together for a special, gritty, sticky, painful fun.
