The first Megalodon eventually gave up chasing him, apparently finding a tastier meal for the moment. That would have been a relief, had Lex not seen yet another of the vicious creatures going after little Oliver.

Cursing himself, he began to swim towards the boy in hopes of getting the monster shark distracted enough to leave.

EIther Lex's distraction worked, or the creature decided after one nibble that it actually didn't want such a scrawny meal. There were fish out there that had more meat on their bones.

When Oliver saw Lex close behind him, he resumed his swim towards the surface. Finally his head broke through the waves, and the kid drew a grateful breath of real air. It was the happiest moment all day.

Once they'd breached water, Lex took in a massive inhale of air and exhaled slowly, shakily. He hadn't known there to be that many creatures in the water, but apparently this was even more a risk on his life than he'd originally thought.

At least Oliver was safe, though. He didn't need that on his shoulders too.

"Good job in there, champ. Told you we'd be fine."

Oliver was already half way to the shore. All it took to get him moving was a slight spark of fear, the thought of not knowing what might still be down there, reaching for his heels when he thought he was safe. It was the same reflex that had little children scrambling up the last two basement steps a little too quickly, or running the last few feet to the safety of their bedroom at the end of a dark hallway.

When he finally got to the shallows where is feet could touch the bottom, he glanced back, and his expression was anything but relieved. How could that be 'fine', they had run into sharks! And everything else! He was completely stunned by the fact they had even survived the trip.

The kid slowed down, and finally stopped when he could sit on the sandy beach, the waves barely reaching the top of his freckled shoulders. And that's where the shivering and teeth chattering began. The reluctance he had shown in getting in the water had returned, this time he was hesitating over getting out.

Lex was far more prepared to deal with Oliver this time. He berrated himself mentally, though, as he scooped the young boy up in his arms like a princess, giving him a smile but frowning at himself. How stupid could he have been? Take the new kid down into the water! Ha! What an idiot. They were both freezing, of course, but Oliver was scrawny and had maybe 2% body fat. Lex had plenty of muscle and tissue to keep him warm, and didn't get nearly as cold as the kid did.

"So, I should probably get you to the infirmary... just for the sake of blankets and to dry off. Towels and things there, and I could grab you some coffee or tea if you want it." He stated, walking in that general direction. "Unless you think you'll be fine in your room?"

Oliver struggled significantly less than when he had been thrown into the water, in part because his body craved the warmth that Lex provided. But he still tried to shake his head.

"I-I c-can w-walk," his usual nervous stammer broken up more than usual from the cold. "I-I'll b-be okay," he said quietly. He didn't want to trouble the older man, not more than he already had. If he just went to his room instead of the infirmary, he would warm up eventually. The small room didn't have much in the way of heat or blankets, but it had dry clothes, and it was a nice, safe place.

The presence in the back of his mind knew what he was thinking, and rumbled in disapproval. <>

"I-I'll b-be fine!" He insisted out loud, forgetting for a second that he didn't have to speak out loud to communicate with the weapon.

With a small shrug, Lex set the boy down on his feet and handed him his own sweater, which was about two sizes too big for the small guy. He needed some warmth, though. "If you say so, buddy. Just make sure I get that back when you're done with it - leave it in the library, and if a strawberry blonde scowls at you for being in there, tell her to take it out on me." The Life trainee yammered, beginning to part paths.

"See ya around, Oliver. It was fun working with you!"
