Azure watched Kamiki work to get out of his own head. He padded over to her, giving a friendly smile and nod to the nervous looking Chandler fellow. He didn't have a creative bone in his body, so he was happy just sit back and watch Kamiki work. Something about watching her - just so into her 'zone - that he found relaxing. The way she would re-arrange the flowers and the looping motions of the ribbons.

"I think it looks fabulous," he said when she was done. He nuzzled behind her ear gently.

Meanwhile, near the foaling grounds, Calliope was milling around in her general dissonance, putting off going on her gathering trip. She hadn't left the herdlands in a while, and wasn't looking forward to leaving particularly. But recently Cataclysm has explained to her that her "Flutterness" would better serve the herd as a gatherer than a patrol. That made sense to her, she couldn't exactly fly very fast or anything. But she was nervous about going alone.

She finally convinced Spellbound to go with her so she wouldn't be alone. But she wanted to stop by and say goodbye to her friend, Euphrates, before she went.

Euphrates knew that Calliope was nervous. She didn't talk much, always seemingly lost in her own head, but she knew. Euphrates wondered if she was nervous about leaving, or nervous about disappointing Balrog or Stormwild with her new role. She was an odd fish in the Herd for sure, but Euphrates liked how that made her unique.

She had never asked, but she had heard her mother was a much more vicious and foul-tempered Soquili, and that Calliope was rather lucky to have been raised among such nurturing parents.

"Here you go," Euphrates said, adjusting the saddle bags and baskets to her body. "As you find fruits and new growth leaves and such, you can put them in here."

Spellbound gave his half-sister an encouraging nudge with his shoulder. "This will be fun, you need to get out more," he said encouragingly. As an ambassador for the herd, he came and went much more than most members, but he always consider Thunderbird his home. He didn't usually 'gather' things when he was out, but he was more than willing to help Calliope with her first mission.

He considered her his sister, full sister, even through he had never met her mother. His mother, Kamiki, also welcomed her into the family. She was a little weird, but harmless.

"Okee dokeee," she said, looking at the pretty bags and baskets. Having these official accoutrements did make it seem more "real" to her. She gave a smile of appreciation to Euphrates before fluttering her wings; making sure she could still lift herself off the ground.

Done and done... maybe she would be exciting. "Okay, I'm ready Spellbound," she said to her brother, bouncing around in the air on her flutter wings.

Before she got too far out of sight, the bobbed around in the air above where Euphrates was standing. "Thank you very much for the bags and things," she said with a warm smile. She didn't address her by her name, because, though she would never admit it, she couldn't remember how to say it right a majority of the time. Ooofrates is how it usually came out.

Her full name wasn't much better, which is why she was okay when others called her Cali.

"Have a good trip," she said, using her wings to wave; she flapped her four wings to give a little push of air and bubbled her up further, and made her giggle. She was so childlike at times, despite being one of the oldest members of the herd.

She turned her attention to Spellbound. "Thanks for going with her. She'll feel much better with her Big Brother to look after her." She have a smile and a nod back to him before they headed off.

She turned her attention back to the little meadow that would normally be used for foaling and foal sitting. Aspen was nearby, and one of the new white twins. There hadn't been any foals here for a while, but with spring coming she was hoping that soon change.

"All right!" Spellbound said with an enthusiastic shout. He looked back to Euphrates and have her a wink. "Not a problem at all! I'm excited to have a little brother sister bondong time!" he said with a chuckle as he watched Calliope bob around in the air. Though he had flutter wings like her, she was a rather accomplished flier for a Fluttercorn. Sure, he was nothing compared to his feathered winged brethren, but he was rather proud of the progress he had made.

He bucked and took to the air, spiraling up in the air. He was in no hurry; they had no set time-table, but it was neat to see the whole herdgrounds from up there He didn't have to get very far before seeing some of his herdmates patrolling the grounds, and milling about in the spring sun in the thickets.

Spring was always an exciting time, and he was looking forward to seeing what him and Calliope could dig up.

Tisiphone paced up the mountain path, her wings unable to carry her in the sky patrol. She stayed quiet, eyes on the trail, coming up from behind. She may not know it, for Tisiphone was far from an affectionate mother, but Lamia was nearly the only reason she was there and she was upset that she couldn't fly with her. She knew after the attack started, then she would be together with her again, and Tisiphone had promised herself that she would protect her.

She didn't have a dog in this fight, not unless you counted her daughter. Thankfully her other daughters were far away from this war she had little interest in. But being part of a herd ment heeding your duties and she planned to do so to the best of her abilities; but if some ill came her Lamia, someone would pay; even if that someone was Taraxippus.

On the contrary, Seance was eager to be near the front of the line, as close to her Daddy as he would let her be without being a pester. She didn't fully understand exactly why they were going to war, but she didn't care. Her Daddy had a job for her and she was going to do it!

She had never been this far outside their shadowy herdlands. The mountain air was cold and crisp, and the hard trail was windy and hard to navigate. Her shadowy tendrils twisted and twirled over her; wiggling in excitement and anticipation.

Diogenes followed near the front of the ground-assault group. His eyes were steeled, and his hooves here heavy as he marched. His dughter's recent departure was fresh in his mind, and the last words she said to him rand over and over in his head. She was the last peice; the last litle whisper of Io... perhaps his only last link to he goodness and warmth and hope he brought to his life that he never waned to admit.

And she was gone.

Perhaps it was for the best. She didn't need to see this. It wasn't too later for her - her soul, like a candle flickering in the wind... it needed to be nurtured and coddled and loved. That flicker could be become a flame; but not surrounded by the herd he called home.

Not with him.

It was for the best.

That was the mantra he kept thinking to himself. He could feel he naivity of some of his herdmates as they marched to war; he would not fall victim to that mindset. He was fully aware not everyone who was marching up his mountain may come down.

Legion wasn't the most agile flier; his unamble wings were spindly and hard to control. But he had made it, and he had to stop himself from cackling with glee. His blood was rushing through his body, which tingled on pins and needles. They were at a presepice of something big. Something important. Anxious energy, twinged with fear, caused him to bounce on his hooves as they waited for the signal.

She stayed back, in the shadows, moving about the underbrush unseen by any. But Kumiho followed Firestorm and his posse up the mountainside, waiting to see the fruit of all her plots and planning finally come to fruition.

PHASE 2

Firestorm could barely contain the grin that had come to stretch his face. There.. almost there... a few more hoofsteps. He knew that tree and this bend of the narrow pathway. It grew tighter as they approached the herdgrounds, the branches grabbing at his wings.

Finally, knowing he was no more than fifty feet from where the path broke the treeline, he spread his wings, stopping the procession behind him.

"We're here." He said in a whisper. He had informed the group ahead of time how vital it was that they maintain absolute silence once they reached the end of the path and waited for the other team to attack at the same time.

He nodded to the ravens perched on his wings. "Fly. Fly now. Send the signal to attack!" He said with a harsh whisper, barely able to contain himself as the ravens flew off. They stayed low, darting through the trees and did not keep together, just in case one of them was intercepted.

And silently, Firestorm began to count. One.... Two... Three....

Infernum waited patiently and silently. He could see the sky begining to darken past the ceaseless waterfall. The time would be soon. His fiery eyes relentlessly scanned the skies, looking for the signal.

He wasn't anxious... but he was prepared.

And then there... he squinted as he saw the flash of feathers. Was it one of their ravens? Yes.... unmistakably a black raven with multiple eyes.... and then, from slightly further to the north, another raven, piebald, also with multiple eyes. Haruspex and Omen. Infernum smiled.

They sailed under the outcropping and landed in front of Infernum.

"It is timmmme!" Omen decreed, a manic look in his multiple eyes.

Infernum turned to the gathering of soquili, spreading his wings with a snap. "We fly! To victory!" He announced. He wasn't the speech-giver that Taraxippus was, but he didn't need to be. They all were ready, they all knew what they were there for.

Infernum did not hesitate to be the first to kick off of the ground and beat his wings, catching the updraft from the waterfall and carrying him up and over to the Thunderbird herdgrounds, an army behind him.

Eleven hundred ninety eight..... elevenhundred ninety nine.... twelve hundred!

Firestorm's eyes flashed. It was time. "ATTACK!" He whinnied shrilly.

Taraxippus smiled. He was not a religious stallion, but just for a moment, he silently asked the spirits to guide them on this battle.... to help them prove their mettle and worth. This was the moment he had been waiting years for.

He hung back, just a moment while the race of colors few past him into the unsuspecting herdgrounds. He was a commander, not a foot soldier.

Stormfall had been ready to head on back towards the inner limits of the herd grounds when she spotted two strange ravens winging their way towards the waterfall. Her gaze narrowed on the birds as the swooped below the edge of the waterfall and out of sight. She didn't recognize either one of the birds from what she had seen of them. It was strange, but not unusual, to have other flighted animals besides Soquili in the airspace that the Thunderbird Herd controlled. This felt different somehow.

As the mare shrugged off the incident and turned in the direction that would take her back to the herd something changed. The atmosphere shattered around her with the sound of many wings beating the air. Stormfall turned around to a grim sight of many winged Soquili rising from beyond the waterfall; none of which she recognized on sight. These were invaders! Somewhere she found the nerve to speak to the orange stallion that was obviously leading the group, "You do not belong here! Leave now in peace and we will not pursue!"

Stormfall shook loose her winged companions and braced herself for a fight. One of her companions flew off in an attempt to bring a warning to the rest of the herd or to possibly bring aid. Until then Stormfall knew that she was on her own. Her heart rate accelerated as adrenaline pulsed through her body. Her wings snapped open as she tensed her body, readying herself for the clash.

Sabin Duvert
Stormfall is addressing Infernum of course.

Barely a wingbeat behind her son flew Megaera, a proud, determined smile on her face as she took to the air and sailed up and over the waterfall. The cavalry's charge was led by Infernum, and she could not be prouder that he had been the one chosen to lead this arm of the invasion. She did not attempt to steal his limeight as he was the first to crest over the waterfall and startled a mare who seemed to be waiting just at the top. She did not overtake him - letting the proud, heavily and powerfully built stallion be the face of their herd and the first thing that their targets witnessed.

But Megaera wasn't about to let Infernum far from her sight and protection. Not that he needed it. Or Psyche for that matter. They were her children, and as much as the herd meant to her, she would protect them to the last.

Her eyes narrowed at the brown mare and she chuffed a laugh. Never the best with words, she didn't even bother responding, instead, pumping her leathery wings and arcing towards Stormfall.
