The pound was fuller than ever as more animals made their way into it. Some were lost pets, others newborns, but most were strays caught in the street
But being this packed meant more space was needed. Which meant the oldest, the weakest, the illest and the deformed got picked first to be put down. Selection of the fittest in the form of a shot
It was not an easy task but so many animals making their way into the streets and so many new species and breeds poping out of everywhere, there was simply no room (both in and out)

A young freckled man came out of one of the empty compartments, carrying a mop on one of his hands
"Oh hello sir. How can I help you?"
He noticed the squirrel kid peering inside the cages. He wasn't quite sure what he was, but seemed humanoid enough

So it was a kid. Good thing he haden't mention anything about it
"It's just picking the dog and filling up the paperwork really. And paying for the registration of course. Are you interested in a specific type? Or age? We've just received a litter and the pups are old enough to be taken to a new home"
The dog lazily opened one of her black yellow eyes and looked at the strange fuzzy creature looking at her. Didn't smelled like anything she knew. Probably was just going to walk to one of the other cages as usual

"It usually goes from $100 to $300, depending of the breed, size, if it was or needs to be neuter, microchiping, etc. Might sound costy but we make sure the animals are healty and in good conditions to face a new home"
He realized the cage Ike was eyeing. Better warn him about that particular case
"Maybe we should go and see the one he's interested in. It's always best to have the adults opinion"
Curious she got up and went to sniff the strange thing. It had been a good while since someone spoke softly at her

"6 legs, 2 jaws, glowy eyes and one hell of a temper. I think it's from being behind bars because she's quite smart. Still she's been here for too long and we'll have to put her down..."
She wasn't paying attention to the newcomers either. The fuzzy thing was interesting and had a nice smell of wilderness
She eagerly smelled Ike's palm, trying to register every single information she could gather

"A temper, eh? Around what?"
It wouldn't do to have anything running around and removing the throats of any of the children...or vertically-challenged adults, for that matter.
"Put down?" Ike looked up to the adults, but did not remove his hand from the cage, "Like how?"
"Errr..."

"Destroying public property mostly. She can't have anything new without tearing it useless. And it's completely impossible to take her to our yard outside. She'll dig the place up like mad. But as I said, it's probably because she's closed up most of the time"
She stoped sniffing Ike's hand and looked up at the caretaker. She knew he was talking about her and by that tone it meant it was about her stuff It was not her fault the things they gave her never lasted long. She was bored to death in there
"With just a little shot. It's painless and she won't suffer that way"

"We have twice as many animals as we should and we keep getting more every day. It's not an easy decision but there's no other way... unless they get adopted and properly taken care of"
He could completely understand Ike's reaction. He had the same when he was a kid and he still disagreed with the system. But people who abandoned their animals or who let them breed uncontrollably were the first to blame
By the sudden change of tone she realized something was wrong. And she didn't liked it
She started barking like mad, getting up and trashing against the wire door. Soon other dogs followed, filling the pound with the sound of dozens of angry animals
