"If portals don't open again, then maybe we can just go have one together. Just between us." A thanksgiving between the two of them was much more manageable, but it wasn't' exactly family either. Thanksgiving was supposed to be big.
"It would be nice to get a few big turkeys. Actual turkeys. And pies." He smiled at the idea. "I miss nice Thanksgivings."

Rin smiled too as her body relaxed more and more against his, "Tell me more about nice Thanksgivings?..."

"Hmm....well, okay." From what he remembered, Rin didn't get to experience much or have much in the way of family and nice Thanksgivings. It seemed to be a common thing around Deus, and he felt lucky to have ....have had such a nice family.
"Well, we all have our Thanksgiving at my Grandmothers. She lives by a lake in Maryland, in a old house her grandfather made. Everyone in our family drives or flies there, so it's a lot of people picking up people and arriving at all hours. The TV is always on with sports, and my Grandmother, my mom, my sister, aunts, and a few nieces are in the kitchen. That and whoever has a new girlfriend. The kids set the table and put whatever centerpieces they made in school. My sister, Sophie, usually sneaks out to have a smoke, and I go out and talk with her."
He breathed out, imaging it. Another holiday without him there. It tore him up inside. "And the food. Just everything. The table gets set and we all sit down, we say a prayer, and then everyone starts eating and talking and drinking. It's like that for the rest of the day. People coming and going eating for the rest of the day whenever they have more room, and desert too. Watching TV. Talking on the stairs. Taking naps upstairs. Kids running outside to play in the snow. Everyone catching up on what has happened over the year." He breathed out again, feeling his eyes mist at the sudden swelling homesickness that was consuming him.
"I really miss it a lot." His voice just barely cracked.

"Mmmhmmm," Rin hummed with acknowledgement to Melvin's explanations. Her body had gone completely limp and her breathing slowed drastically. Her mind drifted to visions of the scenes that Melvin described. People, happy, smiling, and warm. Hugs and cheek pinches all around and at the suggestion of girlfriend? Her mind dragged onward, injecting her into the thoughts. Maybe she was helping bake a pie? It was a shame that they could never live such simple normal lives again... but it was okay to dream, right? She would say she wished she got to see it. But it would have been a hollow wish that would go unfulfilled. She was asleep now. Dreaming her little dreams. That was the closest she was ever going to get.

He looked down to see that she had fallen asleep, and turned to turn off the nightstand light. There was another one, still on, near Rin's side, but he liked to have at least one light on.
Shifting to be more comfortable, he gently ran his finger's through Rin's short hair, focused on her breathing, and tried to fall asleep.
