The mushrooms grew, and swam within her vision. Was Path hungry? Yes, she thought, distantly. But there was a little doe to save, now, and she had stamina. She would outlast.

She emerged from the cave tight-lipped and straining, and looked glad to see again the silence and the ash-snow. Here, after all, there was no temptation...and no noise. Her ears flexed and stretched and met with deadened silence, and she shivered again each time the ash hit her back and it wasn't cold - you could forgive her for assuming so; it looked so much like snow. The silhouettes of other kin emerged from the white, and suddenly - it all rushed back.

A throat of thorns and brambles rose around her, and Path knew that there was no deciding here: she followed the kin through, and did not hesitate to take the path covered in oil, to the left. She did not like flowers with thorns, and whatever that black substance was, would be an easy enough obstacle to cross.

And just as suddenly, as the hoof she had raised when sound disappeared, it returned all at once. With a hoof fall that echoed like thunder, plants and vines erupted from the dirt, roaring, menacingly twisting around themselves until she was trapped. By the time her ears had stopped ringing, leaves fell in place of ash, slowly, and before her loomed two paths. One was dark and oozing, like a puncture wound. Something, thick, black, and oily dripped into pools that bled into the path. The other was green, dotted with flowers that leered like eyes and were colored like rot, watching, waiting. Bird song jingled through the branches. but Heart knew better than most how sweet a trap can seem. Turning left towards the black, she stepped gingerly over the first puddle.

Even her own breath seemed to echo between her ears, The ash faded away and was replaced by thorns. Thorns everywhere. They curled upwards into an arch as if to form a path. When she reached the fork, Burning Bush closed her eyes. She went left, for if ever there was a place like Nightfall's heart, it was here in these oilslick pools.

Ghouls awakes with a start, and recalls the final moments of his strange dream.... overwhelmed by hunger, he ate and ate these glowing mushrooms until his stomach exploded. A peculiar dream, of course. Bone Kisser, his faithful moth, flutters from her perch on his head, upset with his movement.

There will be other times for him to figure out who his friend was, and a dream was surely not the best one. Especially when he was so hungry it affected his dreams. "Come, Bone Kisser, let us find something to eat," he called to his moth as he stood up.

Fizz slid through the ash, just on the verge of running as his senses fled him. His body was tense, his breathing quick as he slammed his hooves into the soft ashy ground, begging just to feel the impact. Had he ever dreampt this lucidly before? If so, why could he not just wipe away this horrible nightmare.

Sound. The blood pumping through his veins almost deafened him and the harsh gasping breaths from his open mouth sounding like a storm building through the swamp. Fizz skid to a halt, his trembling doing much to remove the ash from his hide, though it remained dingy and stained.

Fizz did not like being so enclosed. The warm closeness of the swamp was one thing, he had enough of Kimeti blood in his veins to find comfort within it's depths but this was not the swamp he knew. He'd prefer the sands of the achas to this dark enclosure.

Given two options once again... Fizz ground his teeth together and chose right.

Down he follows the natural path, the voice wringing with sharp clarity. While ash blanket him, he moves effortlessly through the dream. Stamina and endurance are not factors in this new world he walks in.

Down and down the path wound and he followed until once more a decision I had to be made. Of course, things could never be that easy. It was the law of nature.

Again, with the flowers. No thank you. To the left he went, opting for whatever the black oilslick was. He threw some sticks into the oil slick. Satisfied, he dipped his tail into it ever so gingerly. Whatever it was, he would try to remember to track it down when awake to see if it could be used to decorate his skulls. Whatever he did, he was always alert and open to new ways he could better the business venture he shared with his sister.

16 of them remained, and of this lot, ten of them head to the left -- risking mysterious puddles of oilslick sludge, working their way delicately through what could be a foul and poisonous substance.

One of them falls in and, terrified, struggles his way up to stand. His eyes show white with horror, and then settle back to something calm. He's fine. Just fine. It's not sinking in or making him sick; he can barely feel it sitting on top of his skin.

That is when the first caiman pokes its head out and catches his ankle in its jaws. More appear out of the puddles, their skin mottled black on black, shimmering with a rainbowy sheen.

They are all pulled down and devoured.

They will awake, wherever it is they fell asleep, tossed free of the dream by their horror.

Sorry you five: you took the wrong path, and your low scores unfortunately mean that this is the end of the game for you! However, I request that you write a short reaction post in this thread -- either of your kin as he/she is eaten, or of their feelings when they awake -- if you'd like to get Legendary credit for participating.

Five of those who travelled down the wrong path spy the caimans as they come out and react more quickly -- dashing from an amble to a run, no longer picking their way through the sludge but cantering through it, the breath burning through their lungs as they struggle to outpace the caiman.

They leave their companions to die, and join those who travelled to the right.

Those who travel down the right path don't find themselves unscathed by the experience; thorns, surrounding them, p***k their skin and the flowers release a sickly scent that leaves them gagging, slowly, working their way down. The walls close in and birds flutter among them, taking bites at their skin, pulling up tufts of fur.

And then they vanish. They'll stand covered in blood and face their black-splattered companions, in the center of a fishbowl-like air pocket beneath an ocean that presses down around it. Peering upward, they can see fish flying [no, swimming] in the endless blue that surrounds them. Jellyfish press up against the transparent wall of air, and then shove themselves away.

Once again, they find themselves at a crossroad.

To the left there is a slit like cut skin in the invisible barrier, and through it, a frog has come hopping out. It is still soaking wet; if they choose to go this way, they will escape into the press of the ocean, and will simply have to swim.

To the right there is a crevice releasing hot air bubbles from the surface of their cave into the water above. These bubbles are surprisingly sturdy; should a kin step above the crack in the dry earth, this safety will surround them and carry them away to who-knows-where...

Following the birds seems to be a poor choice. The thorns close in, and she snarls but knows better than to fight them-- struggling would only ever make it worse. The birds however, they were fair game, and as they attack her she takes a few feathers of her own, even while gagging from the scent of the disgusting flowers she had been wary of. But the pain of the thorns, however real, had left her group intact - the black splattered group that they joined up with were almost halved in number.

The path had brought them to a fishbowl of sorts, beneath what could only be the ocean she'd only ever seen from the surface. Fish of types she'd never seen floated around them, and the two slits in the barrier loomed before her. Swim, or float.

She could still smell the wretched flowers in her fur. Aggravating as the birds had been, she still trusted the frog.

She stepped through the crevice to the left and into the water beyond.

Caiman. His naming dream crashes full force into his head and he determines that he will not be victim this time. He rushes, faster than ever before, and blocks the sounds of dying from his mind. He cannot help them, only himself. And help himself he does, as he comes to join those that had chosen another path -- from the looks of their blood spattered bodies, it was no easier than his own.

With a breath -- harsh and solid, painful in his lungs -- he takes in his surroundings. The paths set out again, this time beneath an expanse of ocean. He frowns as he notices the frog, skin slick and dripping. The idea of swimming seizes fear into his heart and yet... Doubt creeps into his mind as he takes in the air bubbles.

Neither option is reassuring. The bubbles are going upward though and up, there may be some hope in that. He breathes, deep, and goes to the right. Motherfather help him.

Shadowed Moon is used to looking for glowing eyes hiding in the water, as his own caiman enjoys appearing out of nowhere, and so is able to spot the sneaking creatures. Glad of his nightly travels, which increase his stamina, he outruns the creatures, splattering himself in the goo. Bolting out of the path he finds himself surrounded by water! He's never seen this much water before, let alone this much clear water! It's a bit intimidating. Though watching the fish move about it quite something, especially from this angle. While a nice swim would do him some good, he doubts the foal he's chasing would have braved the waves.

If he's intimidated by this much water, then she certainly would be as well. Looking to the bubbles, he feels a bit of doubt. What if they broke part way up? Well, he has little choice. Following the wrong path might cause him to lose his charge. Plus, he does not have that much experience with swimming. Almost wishing he was not chasing someone, or had no idea of the choices they would make, he hesitates for another moment. If only he could just swim. Pacing back and forth he finally get's up the nerve, as the bubbles don't seem to be popping as they travel upwards. Sighing, he steps to the right, forward over the crevice, and let's one of the bubbles surround him, taking him away.

Hollyhock shuddered with every footstep. She'd found quickly that the puddles were thick and viscous and unpleasant, but at least that meant her own memories would not be closing in on her. When the first caiman oozed out of the muck, it did so with a sucking pop; quiet, but not too quiet for Hollyhock's ears. After all, it was a sound that Hollyhock had listened for all her life, in water thick with plants and mud and water that ran clear. The greatest dangers in the swamp were the quiet monsters other kin would never hear. Then another pop followed, and another, until it seemed the creatures were crawling out of every puddle in the tunnel. Hollyhock raced them to the end, bouncing heedlessly off the walls while they crawled out of the muck behind her.

Then she smacked into a wall of water, and she realized she was not in the tunnel anymore. Hollyhock stopped, panting, blood and muck streaming off of her. Water apparently flowed around her, but she was not drowning. She found this fact alarming. And for the first time she was aware that there were other kin here: were they real or another part of the dream? What path to follow next, or if there even was a path, was not immediately obvious to her, and so she followed one of the dream-kin to the right, flailing in blind panic when she stepped out of the bubble until the next bubble enclosed her.

Despite his feeling that this was the right path to take, Night approached the oily pools cautiously. Just before stepping over one, a caiman erupted out of it. Night managed to escape the jaws and forgot about walking carefully. Leaping over the mottled black creature, Night galloped past the rest of the pools, dodging more snapping jaws poking up out of the oily slicks.

Leaving the caimans behind, he thought he heard muffled cries for help. Were there others in this dream with him? He didn't dare stop to find out. If there was one sure thing in this dream, he had to keep moving forward.

And dreams being what they are, the vines melted away and Night found himself standing in the middle of a bubble. And not alone. With him were others that obviously traveled the path that he had, and others that had taken the alternate. Had they been with him all along?

No time to wonder about his newly discovered travel companions, this bubble of air didn't seem very stable. Night needed to find a way out now. The very wet frog wasn't encouraging. He could swim, but there were things out there that he didn't want to encounter without protection.

Night stepped
to the right, standing over the crack in the dry earth. The safety of a hot air bubble surrounded Night and lifted him away.
