Smiles was pleased. Pleased with herself and the damage she'd managed to do to the trap in her way. Seeing the hole she'd created in kicking at them, she wondered if maybe now it was safe to reach in with her mouth and pull more away. Steadily ... Carefully, she reached in and- Nope. She was a fool. Curiosity and pride got the best of her. There was a gap there, she'd created it, and she needed to know that she could pull more free. She couldn't risk kicking again and getting her foot tangled, and that meant only one option. Thorns be damned ... She stuck her face in again; and, again, nothing happened except the biting pain in her mouth and around her nose. None of this was getting her anywhere! A stamp of her hooves and snort of anger was fitting a small foal throwing a temper tantrum, but it gave Smiles an idea. Lowering her head in a way that would ensure her horns took the brunt of her weight, she backed up. Two steps. Five. Ten. She was in the clearing again, but she could see her target and that's all that mattered. She began to ran. Picking up speed as she passed the tree line and ... Success! She rammed horns first into the vines and took them down as she did so. Skidding to a stop, she turned to admire her work. All of this was so unlike her, but it felt good to step out of her comfort zone. She had a daughter to find, however, so her celebration was short. It was time to keep going. She was greeted with the muddy banks of an equally muddy waterway. It seemed it was the only way across, and she was thankful that the water seemed calm and low. Making her way across ended up more a challenge than she thought, though. Something slick and fast brushed past her legs. She jumped, and it proved a bad idea as sharp teeth sunk into delicate hide and flesh. Smiles kicked with the foot that had been bitten in a struggle to remove the creature from her leg and hopefully do enough damage to it that it would swim away. No such luck. She could feel the thing still moving about her legs, and she guessed it was folly to have thought she could scare it away. It was too big for that. She waited, breathing calming breaths through her nose, and stayed as still as she could. It moved past again, pushing into her as it did so, and she used that moment to strike. Throwing her face into the water she bit down into the animal. The water stung where there were still thorns, and she didn't bite as hard as she'd meant to. The fish wriggled around in her mouth and bit back on her cheek. She let go in surprise and pulled her head out of the muck as fast as she could. Great, now she was bleeding. The fish was obviously feeling confident in it's ability to take her down, for it came back faster than she expected. There was no way she was putting her face that close to the thing again. Ripples along the top of the water betrayed where it was, and as it got close to her Smiles lashed out at it with a hoof. She felt it connect, and then the passing glance of teeth along her back leg. This was starting to feel like a circle. She'd kick and it would bite. Again, the same routine. She only hoped that she was nearing the end of the fish's life. It wasn't that big ... She could feel and barely see that her fishy opponent was finally starting to slow down. This time she'd be ready. As soon as she felt teeth on her leg, Smiles lashed out with all of her strength and was rewarded with a gross, underwater, crunch. Not taking any chances, she waited to see if the fish was really dead. When nothing happened, she breathed heavily and drug herself out of the water. The ravine to get away from the water, and potentially more deadly water animals, was steep. She was exhausted but started upwards immediately. She breathed deep and used it to keep herself steady in an effort to keep climbing. The thought of stopping and just resting for awhile was so tempting ... She needed to find her daughter, though. There was a branch just over head, and she hoped that if she could just get a good hold it could help her pull herself up. Finding footing proved easier than she thought, and she made it up to the branch jutting out of the ground. Strung over it was a wilting flower. The very same flower her daughter like to wear in her hair. The smart girl was leaving her a trail! Smiles was bolstered by her newest find. It gave her a second wind of energy and she moved forward. That is, until she nearly stepped on a rat's nest. The rodent it belonged to came rushing at her in a furry rage. Not wanting to deal with yet another fight, or more sharp things in her face, she stepped backwards clumsily. Her bad footing choice gave way under her and she ended up sliding backwards. It wasn't as far as it could have been, and she was still mostly half of the way up the ravine. Small blessings. Her exhaustion was becoming a problem. No matter how hard she looked, there were no safe options for moving upwards that she could find. In her efforts, she snagged a rock with her foot and turned it over. It went tumbling down the ravine and into the water below. Where the rock had been, however, was a wiry strand of tail hair. She couldn't be sure it had anything to do with the taking of her child, but she made note of it anyway.
