This time, it was not a kiss to "prove" something, not like how the first kiss had been. This time, it was gentle and as calm as Ian could make it feel, considering the way his heart was skittering noisily about in his chest. And he'd given Shiloh enough space to move away if he wanted to, to pull free if he didn't feel comfortable.

It felt warm and soft and everything. Ian's fingers held gently to the back of Shiloh's head, tangled in his hair, and then he pulled away, hardly daring to open his eyes and hoping that he wouldn't see a look of disgust or fright or fear on his face because he wasn't quite sure he could take that just yet.

After a second, however, Ian slowly lifted his gaze -

- and Shiloh was smiling. He was smiling?

Ian stared at him, utterly taken aback by this entirely unexpected reaction.

"...what?" he asked, wondering in a panic if he'd done something wrong.

“What?” Shiloh mirrored, surprised by the question as much as Ian was surprised by his reaction.

That moment’s hesitation was all it took for his own hesitation to slip in, snatching like a predator at the part of him that sung and making his smile fade, reminding him what people might think, reminding him that he wasn’t brave enough for this, that it was easier to pretend he hadn’t enjoyed it, that his heart wasn’t beating loudly in his chest.

In his head, Haruka growled, and effectively shushed that part of him. Then she fell back into her sleepy silence, and left him alone to deal with the rest.

Her intrusion had been a quick slap upside the head, and it knocked him just enough to keep him from crashing and burning, but it did nothing to help him answer Ian’s ‘what’.

He didn’t know what, or what to say, and he certainly didn't want to admit to his inexperience, but the warmth crawled up his face again anyway, his face as much of a shade of badly mixed blue and pink as his hair.

Naomi had long since given up, lapsing into a chilled silence that Ian was only too happy to ignore. Instead, he focused his attention entirely on Shiloh; Shiloh and his brightly flushed cheeks, his wide, startled eyes, the way the smile slipped from his face. For a moment, for just a moment, it had seemed as though Shiloh hadn't minded the kiss - that he'd even liked it.

Ian's hand moved from Shiloh's neck upwards, gently pressing his palm against the warm skin of his face, his fingers splayed a little across Shiloh's cheek. His thumb brushed against the blue as he pushed Shiloh's hair away from his face again, the gesture slow and gentle.

"Can I..." he swallowed, taking a small breath, clearing his throat. "May I kiss you again?"

He wanted that smile back; that careless, wonderfully bright smile that had appeared just for an instant but that was now stuck inside of Ian's mind like a brand.

He had definitely liked it. It was a culmination of years dreaming, all pressed into a simple, gentle kiss and he was infinitely glad he had liked it. It had made sense to him, just as he had always thought it would. It made the butterflies dance in his stomach and the proverbial sparks fly. It was amazing. He had liked it before too, but everything had been lost in haste, Ian quick to take his reaction as a rebuttal, and to blame himself, and Shiloh had been quick to hide the fact that he might have liked it, too naïve and insecure about it all, too intent on making Ian take responsibility for his feelings, because Shiloh sure as hell couldn’t.

But here, it was just the two of them, no potential for interruptions, both of them too exhausted to do anything but just be. Ian had let his guard down in front of him, and Shiloh had done the same. He didn’t know what it meant, or what it would mean the next day, but Ian had asked for permission to do it again, asked him out loud this time, his hand gently pushing the hair from his face and any permission that Shiloh wanted to give got caught in his throat, so he nodded meekly instead, his heart thumping even harder.

He wondered if Shiloh's heart was beating as fast as his own, wondered if there was any possible way that anyone could not hear the chaotic pitter patter that seemed to drown out any other sound inside of his head. And he, Ian, who was so used to casual flirtations and who was used to the easy confidence he usually held, was nervous, and it confused him and frightened him all at the same time because he was not used to having things out of his control.

This was entirely out of his control. His heart would not settle. Ian held his breath, wondering if his question had been too forward, too presumptuous, whether Shiloh would realize he'd made a mistake and back away.

But the nod - the simple nod was enough.

Ian's eyes searched Shiloh's for any sign of disgust, but there was none at all, and he moved closer, his throat feeling dry. Pushing himself up a little so that he was partially leaning over him, he leaned his head down, hesitated only a fraction of another second -

- and then his lips were pressed against Shiloh's again and he was kissing him, and it was warm and soft and so very wonderful because here it was just the two of them, without the monster, without the bitterness, without anyone else. Ian exhaled a sigh, leaning into it, a little firmer than before, and his hand slipped away from Shiloh's face to gently place against his back, drawing him just a little bit closer, but still light enough to give Shiloh an escape should he want to pull back.

Ian wanted to drown himself in everything, forget everything else except for this right here, with Shiloh.

There was no disgust, only innocent anticipation that didn’t go unrewarded as Ian leaned over him and kissed him again.

His initial excitement gave way to a happy, sated feeling the long Ian’s lips remained against his and it was nice, was all he could think, kissing was nice. At this moment, it didn’t have to be anything else, just warm and soothing, an escape for them both from thinking, from their demons, from everything beyond this moment. Ian hand dropped from his face, curling around his back in a gentle tug forward and Shiloh dipped his face away finally, exhaling a soft shuddering breath.

He gave into the arm around him, not pulling back yet he leaned against it, grateful for it’s support. Opening his eyes, he stared almost shyly at Ian, leaning his head back onto the pillow while he caught his breath, and his nerve.

“That was... definitely something,” he said softly, his tone teasing and his expression oddly content.

Shiloh not pulling away was what made all the difference in the world. He could have very well have pushed away; he could have changed his mind, decided that he didn't want to after all, that he wasn't going to fall into this mess that was Ian.

But he hadn't. He'd stayed, and he hadn't freaked out (at least not yet).

Shiloh's lips were warm and soft and it did not feel uncomfortable in the slightest. Ian could feel his breath on his face as he leaned back, and his fingers splayed against Shiloh's back, holding him gently in place. His other hand raised once more, sliding alongside Shiloh's hair.

A small smile tugged at the corners of Ian's mouth, hesitant and oddly, uncharacteristically shy for someone was usually so laid-back and careless. He was still partially propped up over Shiloh, and now he looked down at him, his eyes holding the other's gaze.

"...something...something good?" Ian asked softly, not sure if he actually wanted to hear the answer.

Shiloh couldn’t help the laughter that escaped him, and he turned his face from Ian’s gaze, trying to stifle the sound in the pillow.

“No, it was totally awful,” he teased again playfully, rolling back to look at Ian. He reached up with his hand, timidly seeking out the other hunter’s face with his fingers, tracing the contours of it with unsteadiness that betrayed the grin on his face. Shiloh laughed again, a shaky chuckle.

“It was good.”

He had thought about it, and that was the truth. Shiloh didn’t have much in the way of experience for comparison, but he had enjoyed the warmth of Ian’s lips, the taste of him, the subtle scent of his cologne.

And there it was again - that smile, which appeared in a burst of laughter that escaped Shiloh's throat, and Ian caught it before Shiloh turned his face away, let it imprint itself inside of his mind and his thoughts.

His own breath, however, caught in his throat the second Shiloh's fingers touched his face, fingers warm and gentle and trembling slightly. Ian's eyes caught Shiloh's, held a steady gaze, though his heart was beating erratically in his chest; a messy, unsteady thumping that matched the unsteadiness of Shiloh's voice.

His expression softened. Ian turned his face into Shiloh's hand, closing his eyes briefly and kissing his fingertips.

"Good," he said, and there was a clear relief in his voice, Ian's voice sounding slightly rough, slightly shaky. He lowered his head, kissing the inside of Shiloh's wrist, just like he'd done before, back on the training field. "Good," he said again, and his arm slid across Shiloh's bare back, fingers pressed flat between his shoulder blades. Ian leaned back into the pillows, pulling gently so that Shiloh would move with him, tugging him partially onto his chest so that he could look up at him.

"It was good for me too," he said softly, and exhaled slowly, as though he hadn't known he was holding his breath until that very moment.

It was strange the he was the one reassuring Ian; even though he hadn’t a lick of experience in these matters, and his own skill level was total beginner, Ian had asked him if it had been good. Of course it had, Ian was the one who had brought the good to the table. But it seemed par for the course that Shiloh was once again the steady one, well versed as he was in pushing any feeling other than happiness so deep it couldn’t dare scratch the surface.

He watched Ian press his lips to his fingertips, one by one and Shiloh suddenly felt altogether too warm as Ian continued to his wrist, his hand sliding over his back. The feeling was almost ticklish, and he flinched a little as Ian’s hand rested between his shoulders. The fever easily explained why Shiloh’s skin felt as though it were burning up, but it was only partially the reason, Shiloh’s head swimming as though he were in a dream. He couldn’t believe that he was doing this finally, that he was lying next to someone, or, as Ian pulled him up gently, over top of someone, someone that had kissed him and that he had wanted to kiss and it was all so new. It was intoxicating, and he collapsed onto Ian with a sigh.

It had been good, that was all that mattered. He’d deal with everything else later.

The fact that he wasn't making overly confident remarks or flippant comments was testament enough that Ian was not quite himself. Perhaps it had been talking about Patrick that had broken the dam, but even before then he had been out of sorts, ill at ease with himself - and he thought he might know why, even if he denied it. Seeing Shiloh "die" had terrified him, and even with the guard up around his heart, which was wrapped thickly in a layer of barbed wire, he had started to care.

He felt Shiloh relax against his chest, and some of the tension eased from Ian's shoulders. Though, perhaps if Shiloh listened hard enough, he might still hear the erratic pace of Ian's heart. He kept one arm where it was, wrapped around the other with his hand brushing over the bare skin of his back, while Ian's other hand gently smoothed back Shiloh's hair, sliding his fingers through the pale pink strands.

"Thank you, by the way," he said.

“There’s nothing to thank me for, Ian,” Shiloh said softly, smiling down at him. “What are friends for, right? Although I don’t think that friends usually do this.”

He gestured haphazardly at the both of them. He was sure, at least, that there weren’t any of his friends that had done this sort of thing with him. He wasn’t entirely sure what it meant, in any sense, or in any long-term sort of setting but feverish and sleepy, he was content to let it be simply that Ian was attracted to him, and he was attracted to Ian. It seemed simple enough, and he reached up with his own hand to touch Ian’s face again, trailing more boldly this time over his jawline before moving upward, brushing Ian’s bangs from his face.

“Do they?”

He rolled his eyes, but it was more of an affectionate sort of gesture than a teasing one. "I do too," he admonished. "You've stuck with me this far, haven't you? You could have dropped me anytime before now, and I basically just fell apart on you, and you still stuck with me."

He was stuck on the word "friend," trying to decipher it inside of his head, figure out just how to answer that question. Shiloh's fingers were warm and smooth as they touched his face, Ian watching him closely, his fingers curling together against Shiloh's back before smoothing out again, feeling feverishly warm skin beneath his hand.

"...depends on your definition of 'friends,' I suppose," he said finally. He slid his other hand alongside Shiloh's jaw in a mimic of what Shiloh was doing. "I find you extraordinarily attractive and immensely fun as a person, which is too good for me, really, but..."

He brushed a thumb idly over Shiloh's lips. "You're an enigma, really, is what you are. In a good way, something I still have to figure out."

“Where was I going to go?” he asked, his eyes dancing with laughter. “You were hogging my bed.”

His fingers slid from Ian’s face, coming to rest on the pillow, his fingers intertwining gently with the short strands of Ian’s hair. His touch was curious, exploring new territory before timidly pausing, or pulling back, not as sure as the fingers tracing his own jawline in their venture. He surmised Ian had done this sort of thing before, had done all sorts of this thing before, and he wondered if the pace, that seemed blistering and fast to him, was boring to Ian. He didn't have long to dwell on it, because as soon as Ian called him attractive out loud, Shiloh’s hand stilled altogether, his face taking on a stupid doe-eyed expression again, and his cheeks burning pink. It was one thing to think about it in his head, and another to hear it said out loud, by the man currently pressing his thumb gently over Shiloh’s lips.

“I’m not, really,” he argued with a grin, his wall of defense against his embarrassment. He knocked on his head gently with his hand.

“Not a whole lot going on up there, see? You’re just thinking too hard.”

Jokes were good. Jokes were evasive.

Ian made a face. "I meant figuratively, you goofball," he said, but there was a faint tinge of pink to his face that had nothing to do with the feverish warmth of the after-effects of the monster. He could still feel Shiloh's fingers in his hair, which was simultaneously pleasant and distracting - in a good way - all at the same time, and while it was true that he was a great deal more experienced than Shiloh was, the pace was altogether new for him. He was used to moving faster, diving right in without any consideration, but this was slow and steady and comfortable.

He laughed aloud. "You are," said Ian, and as if to prove this, he tilted his head upwards, brushing a light kiss against Shiloh's cheek, where the warmth of the blush spread out across his skin. "Really, ridiculously attractive, since you told me I can't call you cute, even if you are."

Ian pressed his lips together, trying to contain his amusement. "I always think too hard," he said, and then coughed, clearing his throat a little. His fingers moved from Shiloh's face upwards, smoothing a hand through the pale pink strands.

"But what about you?" Ian asked, and his voice was surprisingly a little hesitant, as though he were afraid to hear the answer. "What are you thinking about?"
