"Unfortunately, there is no Miss Roger. Or even a Sometimes-On-A-Cold-Night-With-Roger. Tsk. A shame," he nodded. "How about you? With hands like those, you must have the ladies swarming, no?"
A man who worked as hard as they did rarely had a spouse. It was just a matter of the tradesman. Then again, it was never bad to know where your friends stood. Married and taken men tended to shirk away from certain situation and senses of humor. In fact, he had just crossed that line. Woops. Nic seemed to be the understanding type.
"Ah, that I do. I know Palisade better, I'd have to admit, but I'm getting used to the place. It's been a few years. I have to say, where we're going, it won't matter. The booze is excellent, and the atmosphere is better."

"Ah, I've got no one. Just a handful of friends and such." He smiled, shaking his head. "Both of my little sisters are married though, they moved away a long time ago now. It's just me here, and every so often I send money to my mother, but that's about all I have." He smiled, glancing over to him.
He'd heard of some tradesmen who were married, but he rarely met them in Oldcastle. Perhaps Palisade had better standing for those sorts of men, but Oldcastle didn't seem to, in his experience anyway. No matter, the humor was welcome, and he certainly didn't mind.
"Oh Palisade? I've been a handful of times, I like it here a little better though. It's quieter, more down to earth. There's supposed to be some rather good smiths there though, so I've heard. Carpenters too." He hummed, keeping pace with his friend.

Roger flailed a little, punching the air in expressed frustration.
"YES. Oh, I'm glad it isn't only me." He straightened himself and his clothes visibly, and then turned to Nic. "My sister is nearly a decade younger and has been married for some time. My father still gives me angry glares when the subject arises. I used to live in Palisade as a military guard. Father is a blacksmith himself, retired now. Either way, Amabel was not meant to be married first." He shook his head, shoving his hands into his pockets.
"At this rate, who knows? I may never get there. And that is why the spirits invented spirits, hm?"

"It's good to know, right?" He grinned, jovial at the reaction Roger had. "I just haven't had any interest in it. My mother isn't as worried, since she knows I'm working hard. As for my dad well...He's probably long gone." He shrugged, shifting a little. "My sisters are doing well with their husbands though, they treat them well and all. Might be an uncle in a few years, who knows?" He laughed, watching Roger curiously.
"Well, as long as you're happy, right?" He grinned, watching his expressions in particular.

Roger waved his hand and grimaced.
"Ugh. Don't talk about sisters having children."
The expression soon turned back to a grin, though, and he shrugged. Not interested in marrying, hm? Because he was a man of his work?
"Happy enough! With the war on, perhaps a little less, but it's not something we can change at this very moment, so my concern is currently elsewhere." He inclined his head slightly, and one might have considered that brief look in his eyes to be smoky, but who knew? A carriage rolled by, specifically damning Nic's attempts to get a good read.
Roger spotted the tavern down the road, its lamp partially obscured by its hanging sign. The place had no name, as far as he knew, and existed solely on word of mouth. The people there worked hard too, and they were not afraid to get a little raucous every now and again.

"Ah, that been on the nagging list too, I take it?" Nich laughed, smiling. "It's been on my mother's too, don't worry. That's what I keep on hearing, at least."
"Elsewhere, huh?" Nicholas was amused, and he caught the brief look, one which made him feel the slightest bit flushed. Oh that look..He'd seen that once before, but...Was it really the same one? He couldn't be sure, especially with the damned carriage.
He followed Roger to said tavern, ready to relax and have a drink or two with his new friend. Who knew what the night would hold? Ah well, only one way to find out...

As they entered and headed for an empty table, a wench shouted to them and raised the hand not balancing a tray of drinks.
"Master Payne! Good to see you!"
"Hello, Sissy!"
Roger took to a chair and flopped into it with a soft sigh. Ah, the buzz of social gatherings. There were empty tables, but there was no area without some sort of action. People were laughing, loving, talking loudly. He eyed Nic, just to be sure. Not everyone enjoyed such an atmosphere.
"Not my sister, in case you were wondering."

"Regular here, huh?" Nich teased, sitting down with him. He seemed to like the tavern enough, though didn't hesitate to lean in to hear him better.
"I would think not." He laughed. "Your sister being a bar wench would be interesting, especially if she's married, you know?" He didn't hold back in teasing him. "Hell, I'd make a better bar wench than a married woman."

"Not as much as you'd think," Roger laughed, "Besides, sometimes it's nice to socialize when your only housemate is a paranoid deer. Really, he causes so much trouble."
Sissy came to the table then, all smiles beneath light brown curls.
"Hello, hello! What can I get you tonight? Who's your friend?"
"Sissy, this is Nicholas. He is a skilled carpenter, and a hard working man, and I believe he would like a pint, unless he prefers something else. Nicholas, this is Sissy, and she can balance a full tray better than anyone in this place."

"Shame, it seems like a real gem." He chirped back, relaxing. "I know that feeling, except change paranoid to antisocial. She's not much trouble though, I assure you." He eyed Sissy a little, just enough to seem polite, though didn't seem interested in the least.
"Ah, nice to meet you. A pint is fine." He murmured, the slightest bit amused at his mention of her balancing trays. He wanted to see it, really, but for now, a drink would be perfect.

Sissy chirped an affirmative and disappeared into the boisterous crowd. Roger's mood seem to be lifting even further.
"Ah, right! I'd almost forgotten you were Chosen as well. I meet so few... what, Wardens, is that the word for it now? I forget. I've had Farthir so long, I was just 'the guy with the deer.'"
Roger shook his head, smiling fondly. Ah, for the days when Farthir had been less dangerous and easier to physically stop.
"So, tell me a bit about yourself, Nic." The nickname came out the side of his mouth, almost sharply. He liked the sound of it. "Anything'll do."

"Yeah, she's a shy one, so a lot of people don't know." He laughed, "My Riven's a perfect little lady though, she's only really found one other she's fond of, and that's one of my friend's Guardian."
"Well...There's not much to say." He admitted, shrugging. "Lived in Oldcastle all 29 years of my life, studied under a carpenter after my dad went missing...Nothing interesting, I assure you."
He didn't really seem to have much to say, looking down at his hands with a small smile.

Unlike some other strangers, Roger had no interest in the story of Nic's father's disappearance. If it came out some day, it would be the right time, but asking someone to revisit a potentially painful situation wasn't something he would ever attempt. He was rather interested in the measure of years, however.
Old man, you were not so old...
"I think that's plenty interesting. I don't know many carpenters, especially ones at your level. I know pretty much nothing of artistic carpentry, of decorative carpentry. I'm interested in that! ... although I'm warning you now, I will probably never understand..." His fingers tapped the table.
"Did you inherit carpentry? Or was it a choice?"

"Well I doubt I'd ever be able to understand the complexity of smithing, so we're on equal ground there at least." Nicholas laughed, tilting his head to the side slightly. "There's probably quite a few people out there who can do a lot more than I can, but even that can't possibly take away my love of my work. I don't like leaving things plain unless the wood is really that beautiful, or if I get a request not to. But I like to think it's my forte." He frowned a little, thinking back at his friend's question, glancing down at his hands. "Well...My mother thought it would suit me well. After everything happened, well, we had to get money somehow, you know? Got to make a living to make sure everyone could stay healthy and strong." He laughed slightly. "It wasn't easy, but...It all worked out in the end, didn't it?"

Roger nodded. It was unfortunate that a man not be given a choice on what he wished to do with his life. He had been able to turn to the military, but then look where he had ended up? Back to smithing, the family trade, and enjoying every minute of it. It wasn't that he didn't miss guarding the streets of Palisade, but he was just as content to pound metal until daybreak.
"Half a choice, half decided. We know that story," he smiled, and then grinned at the appearance of a familiar face.
"For my big strong man," Sissy cooed, placing a mug before Roger, "and his big strong friend." Nicholas received a pint as well, but once he got his drink, the tray was dropped to the table and the barmaid dropped carelessly into Roger's lap. There she lounged, legs crossed over one side and an arm around his neck.
"So, Smithy, where's my ring?"
"Shhh. You'll make the other girls jealous," Roger chuckled.
"I don't care! I want my white knight, and nothing will stop us, Lord Payne, will it?"
" 'Lord Payne' ... that sounds a mite inappropriate, doesn't it?"
Sissy laughed and lifted her own drink to Nic over the table before taking a good swig.
