They bickered constantly, Ursula and Athanasius. It wasn't especially remarkable, given Than's penchant for playing devil's advocate with everyone. Middle child syndrome, Albin had said. Petrus evaded confrontation where he could. And usually Ursula was happy to engage him in debate.
Sometimes it got to her, though. Here, it wasn't the difference in opinion that bothered Ursula, but not knowing what his true opinion was. "Do you even have one?" she asked one day, expecting him to deflect (he was good at that, too good).
It was hardly the ultimate rejoinder, but he went silent. The silence remained for so long that she was ready to change the topic when he said, "Who's going to remember someone who just nods along with what everyone else says? I don't want to be overlooked."
And she had forgotten him, arguments or not. What else -- more importantly, who else had she forgotten? She had to get stronger, get her memories back, fight back against whatever it was that threatened all that she valued, forgotten or no. And this journey was one more step towards home and knowledge.
