As of the moment, it appears the gymnasium is decorated for the Introductory Ceremony to welcome students to the new year here at Hope's Peak. Oddly enough, there are no staff present and there's just enough seats for one class. Huh....

In the Game, they meet in the Entrance Hall and introduce themselves, then an announcement is made for them to move to the Gym.

Either way entrance hall has been said enough it'll work for now. They can be called into the gym afterwards once people are there.
