WellzY lili of the lamplight WellzY lili of the lamplight I'm an American. I don't love my country, but I don't hate it either. Much as we all like to b***h and moan about the government, most other countries aren't any better. I'd say most of Western Europe is better. And New Zealand. And possibly Australia. On the issue of interviews with stupid Americans - Producers, and editors have a goal in mind when they make the final version of a show. Doubtless, the interviewers went out and spoke to heaps of people, a lot of people who wouldn't have been stupid at all. But the editors don't want smart people, they want silly people, because it's the aim and goal of their show. As if people are really that stupid in America, they just like the pick the bad ones to stand out more. And oh, that survery about how most people can remember at least 4 Simpsons characters and not 4 Commandments? I'm surprised most people couldn't remember even more Simpsons characters. EDIT: Oh em jee. I just watched that Google Video clip that was linked before (dial-up, ouch). How many other countries do people think Australia is? o-0 Australia =/= Iran Australia =/= North Korea Australia =/= France I MEAN COME ON! Not to mention that guy with the board of the world map was Australian. I'm surprised he was able to keep from laughing. I'm not an idiot- that's a stereotype I deliberately live down. I might get them out of order, but I know the commandments, I also know the rights outlined in the first ten amendments to the Constitution, and several other things that come in sets of ten. I can probably rattle off dozens of 'Simpsons' characters though. I didn't say you were an idiot. =o I remember next to nothing about our constitution, but that's probably because ours was written up all hunky dory, with no war needed to set it in stone, which without, makes for a very uninteresting read. I would rather live in Austrailla than America we are soooooooo dumb education wise ,(i watched a show on this and Beligum students performed better than we did)

You should come join us, I'm sure we'd be happy to accomadate you. But then, I think Belgium ranks as one of the most intelligent nations anyway.

Dave Quote: United States 98 Canada 97 We're smarter than Canada? biggrin At least there's SOMETHING for America to be proud of in a world where everyone else hates us. Go USA! sweatdrop But seriously, I kinda think we're getting the a**-end of the deal here when test scores are talked about. Well, I am at least. It kinda hurts when I see that Americans are degraded by foreigners, for even though I share absolutely no traits with the people who make this country intolerable to the rest of the world, their hate is still directed toward me as well. You insult my country, you insult me too, even if it is true that a good 50% of Americans are unintelligent fools. I mean, I sure as hell am no: -C average student -Imperialist -Gun owner -Obese person -Hick -Bush supporter -or whatever the hell else foreigners think is amusing to joke about in regards to my people. It's getting just a little out of hand, and I don't appreciate it too much, to be quite frank, and I don't think the rest of my intelligent countrymen do either. Sorry if I sound like I'm whining, but American-bashers should just hear how they themselves sound. neutral

I understand that the negative American stereotype is a minortiy. Or at least. perhaps not the majority.
But, when you distinguis an American by accent, it's hard to immediately know where they fit into that picture. It's just another label really.
Don't worry Hawk, i'll love you. heart

I really don't know how popular America is with other countries but being an american now for 2 yrs, i can understand if its not very popular. The one thing that really bothered me about America (other than how dumb the average student is) is that America as whole has no family values and how America really puts monetary value over Family values. When i first came here and i would go over to my friend's house, i would see him and his brothers swearing at their parents. It doesn't matter what the situation is, you just don't swear at your parents. And the thing about putting your parents in 'old folks home', i don't understand that. when they need their kids the most, they stick them in some home for people who can't take care of themselves. Studies have shown that most senior citizens who live in 'homes' doesn't really belong their, its just they have nowhere else to go.. its sad actually..
With that said, America really is the land of opportunity, in America, if you really have the determination, you really can become whatever you want to become. Even if you have just an average job with average pay, you can have luxury (if you know how to save, which most Americans can't seem to do).
Well thats what i think...

Even if you have just an average job with average pay, you can have luxury (if you know how to save, which most Americans can't seem to do). Well thats what i think... Agreed (I'm Canadian but it's very similar here). There are still a lot of things that shock me about North America, even though I've been living here since I was like 5 xp Including: -The amount of fat people. And I dont mean people who have legitimate reasons for being overweight, I mean people who eat 50 pizzas per day and who watch TV non-stop. -How many people don't care about education. How can they not??? It's so easy to live a very good lifestyle here, but most people don't take advantage of that at all. In many other countries you could have a university degree and still only be earning $1000 (US) per month. -The complete lack of gender roles. Yes, I'm feminist and I don't like the 'men work and women clean' type of family thing (unless the husband earns like 50 million per year and the wife has nothing better to do), but there has to be a limit somewhere too. The idea of the father spending as much or even more time with his kids than the mother is completely foreign to me. >_> I'll post other stuff later on if I think of anything, it's like midnight right now and I can't think xd

Dave Quote: United States 98 Canada 97 We're smarter than Canada? biggrin Look, I don't mean to be rude... but this is probably why people don't like Americans. You see a number published in a book with very the results of biased, one-sided tests and assume it to be some kind of very solid fact? Please use your common sense: a) In most of the coutnries tested for that book, only a couple hundred people were used. b) Following your logic, Europeans are smarter than black people because many African countries scored very poorly on those IQ tests. (No offence or anything, I'm sorry if I come off as rude. sweatdrop )

I can understand that it's not a very solid book, and you certainly can't use it to claim a nations overall 'intelligence' based on how you classify intelligence, who you sample (was it random and representative of the whole) and how intelligence is measured. Of course the average IQ of a developing country is going to be be less than that of a developed country, due to the huge obscurity in reasources. But that shouldn't make the country, and the people in the country, any less human and deserving of respect.
