"I'm, er," said Gale, shuffling his feet. "not that good at short-range, I'll admit. Thane was sort of right on that front, I haven't done much when it comes to short range except use my rifle rather like a baseball bat and swing it around. It's worked a few times, but not all the time."
He'd made her a little sad, and Gale reached a hand up, poking playfully at her cheek. "Don't make that face," he said gently. "Bix is all right, I'm all right, and you're all right. It was bad at the time, and I was pretty messed up for a bit, but it happened and now we're moving on."
Stormy's fingers felt cool against his forehead, and he smiled at her. "I like that idea," he said. "In sync with each other. It has a nice ring to it, after all."
He tilted his head thoughtfully. "So, was that an inclination to spar now, or did you want to wait until you've made peace with Thane? Er, so to speak, I mean."

Again her cheek puffed at the poke, though it did the trick. "Funny you should say it has a ring to it, since we also have totem rings~" Stormy quipped with a little grin, lifting her right hand and wiggling it a bit. But she paused at the decision about their battle, having thought that maybe they should cool off a bit from that conversation first before trying anything.
< < Today. > > Thane's rumble sounded a little eager. < < I wish to show the morsel our power today. > >
"Ah...We don't really make peace through words so much as actions anyway. If you don't have anything to do, we could sp--practice right now," Stormy answered with a little nod, sliding her hands off his person and stepping out of his arms. "I think it'll cool him off either way, and I also think of this as a chance to prove how cool you are~ Not that I think you need proving at all, but I can watch and see if I can mimic the coolness."

He smiled, then leaned back away, reluctantly letting Stormy move out of his arms. Gale hadn't ever sparred with her before, and he was somewhat nervous about it already, but she was stronger than she appeared, and he wanted to be able to prove himself, as she had said - even if he didn't need to (but he was already under the opinion that he did).
"All right," he said, and lifted his hand, the ring glowing brightly white momentarily before the rifle appeared in his hands, gleaming in the foggy mist of the day.
"You first."

Ah...seeing the rifle up close and personal without the haze of battle was strange. She almost wanted to run her hands along it, but maybe that was a bad idea--sort of like the daemons in His Dark Materials.
"Alrighty." Stormy took a few more steps back, suddenly feeling a bit nervous about her own idea. It had been a while since she had sparred with someone, least of all with a full hunter like Gale. The normal need to prove herself seemed to double with a sort of stage fright rising in her, like she needed to perform a certain way to impress him. Taking a breath, she pulled a ribbon off her person and tied her hair back, then summoned the greatsword to her hands; she was surprised to find it different than before, more jagged and perhaps a bit longer too judging from the weight.
"Short range practice first, then." Stormy fell into a basic stance, studying Gale's form before lunging forward with a thrust.

He wasn't sure he was ready for this, but Stormy gave a lunge towards him and there wasn't quite any time to reconsider this whole sparring thing. Gale stumbled backwards, eyes wide, and then grinned, regaining his footing.
"All right," he said, and swung the rifle around, gripping it by the barrel. "Short range it is!"
He swung it towards her, leaping.

Clang! Metal hit metal as she tried to blunt the energy behind his leap, having to back up under the force as well. "Not bad!" Stormy cheered. "I'm wondering, though, is there more weight at the barrel or the part whose name I can't remember that you hold against you while firing? You could try clubbing me with that part."
She sounded remarkably cheerful about the notion.
"Or--" She pulled the greatsword behind her and rushed forward. "Find a little more momentum!" Somewhere between a bat swing and a golf swing, she sliced at Gale in an upwards diagonal arc.

There was at least one thing to be said about Stormy -
She hit pretty damn hard.
"The barrel is the heaviest part of the gun," said Gale, stepping backwards and grinning. "That's why I hold it there when I use it like this, instead of on the handle. And you, Watson, you seem to have a nice grasp on things already."
He leapt towards her again, sweeping the gun at her legs in an attempt to knock her off her feet.

She hit hard only when there was an older hunter of some sort watching. The pressure to perform made her . . . really perform rather than freeze up apparently. "I'd hope so," Stormy replied as a matter of factly. "If I didn't by now, Thane would never let me live it down. But let's just say this thing took a long while getting used to." And even still with the new shape and weight she had to do more adjusting on the fly.
The barrel clipped her shield because of it, and she had to catch his gun on a parrying hook to avoid tripping, though the jar was unpleasant going up her arms. "You're starting to get it too, though! My next question is, charges or no charges? Because mine can be a little iffy sometimes."
< < I am in more control of it than I was before. > > Thane's runes had begun to glow a soft purple, and to say he was scrabbling to burn Gale was like saying the sun in summer was warm. Stormy was almost wincing with the images of the dracolich's claws in her mind digging at her insistently.

Gale gave a small grunt, though the grin was still on his face. He rubbed his arm, shaking it out a little, and repositioned himself. "Shooting a gun took a bit of getting used to as well," he admitted, and swung the gun around, trying to get a better balance. "I didn't think I could do it, but I managed to get used to it."
He lunged, then parried, twisting around. "Whatever you like," said Gale lightly, smiling. "This was your idea, so it's up to you."
The gun came slamming around into her waist this time, a little harder than he had intended.

"That's part of the bond, someone told me. They make you a little faster and stronger than normal people and you get more attuned to the type of weapon you have automatically and stuff."
The rest of what she meant to say died in her throat as she reacted too slow to the swing and stumbled back, feeling the breath knocked out of her despite the shield. The greatsword clipped the ground to steady herself as she rubbed the affected area with a wince.
< < If it is our decision, then let us put the morsel in his place, > > Thane hissed. < < Neither he nor your so-called comrades will think you anymore more than a little ghoul unless you show them you have the power of something more. > >
"Whoops! Aha, maybe I shouldn't talk in battle so much," Stormy said with a self-depreciating smile. "Wield that thing like a mace and remember to keep a little space between you so you can get the full momentum of your swings. That's why I have to backstep and keep moving, since this kind of sword doesn't go fast."
< < Let me burn him. > >
We're not trying to break shields.
< < I won't but singe then. > >
Something in her doubted that highly, but Thane had struck a chord with her on one notion: the idea of proving herself meant she had to show she was fearless and ready for combat, and if that meant risking the charge . . . Well, Gale was a full hunter. He could take it certainly.
"Alrighty," she chirped with a little extra forced enthusiasm as she picked up her blade. "Fire incoming!"
It was only when the charge activated that she realized Thane was fully intending to burn through Gale's shield and more. As a basic trainee it had taken the friction of the edge against the opponent to set the acidic explosion off, but she was startled to find as she neared him that the greatsword seemed to skip past that part, encasing itself in the same oily liquid but setting itself aflame long before any contact had been made. The dracolich's vengeance pushed the Fear through her painfully, and his will clashed with hers, violence versus benevolence. The dissonant bond made her falter, and while the purple flames ate her shield she swung rather distractedly, fighting off the urge to hold her head as Thane howled his disappointment.
The greatsword hit the ground before Gale in a small but useless burst of flame and then cooled down. Stormy was stunned for a moment, shivering a bit before she made an odd laughing sound to try and play the whole thing off. "Th-That's what I get for biting off more than I can chew, huh?" she joked, sweaty and trying to forget how very close that fire felt to her face. "This is the first time I tried it as an intermediate, so . . . should've expected it to blow up in my face." Literally.
< < We were not of the same mind, you useless lump of flesh, > > he growled in her head.
"Sorry about that."

He could smell the scent of the fire, could almost taste it, even, and as Stormy came rushing towards him the sword swinging overhead, Gale could hear his heart thudding loudly in his ears, a rush of sudden surprise coursing through him. He took a breath, a step back, automatically raising the gun in front of him to block her swing, and for a moment, for just a moment, he was certain she was going to take him out.
But the blow never came. After a moment, Gale lowered his rifle to see Stormy standing in front of him, a look of shock on her face, the sword point digging into the ground. Gale stared at her, taken aback, and tried to figure out what had just happened.
<< Perhaps she and Thane had a disagreement. >> Jinhai offered musingly, the dragon curling inside of his head, and Gale gave a minute shake of his head, as though trying to clear it.
Perhaps, he thought, frowning a little, because now he was becoming sure that this had not been a very good idea from the start. But she had asked him to spar, and spar honestly with her, and Gale drew a sharp breath, steadying himself. She had asked him, and he was going to respect that, and not treat her as though she were made of glass.
Still, he wanted to make sure...
"You okay?" he asked, as he hefted the rifle and came charging towards her, spinning it around to knock her in her side.

Her hands were sweaty from the unexpected heat of the charge, used to initiating the blast herself rather than having to wield it from swing to contact. As such, she fumbled trying to fend of Gale's attack and grit her teeth as the barrel of the sniper gun slammed against her shield with a vengeance. Stormy staggered back, panting and winded again.
"I-I'm good," she answered with a shaky smile, lifting the greatsword with a better grip on the handle. "Totally fine. Just . . . surprised is all! You're a fast learner!" She wished she could shake off the sulfuric smell that made her nauseous still.
"Freebie: try and break my defense this time."

He frowned slightly, tilting his head. "You don't look very fine," he said lightly, trying to tease her a little, and lifted the rifle again, his fingers curling around the barrel of it, which was icy to the touch. "You're pretty good at this, Watson. I'm impressed."
Except his swing clearly was off, Gale stumbling over his own two feet.

"Thank you, but I'm fine," she answered emphatically, catching his teasing tone just a little too late in her haste to reply. Stormy backed off immediately and tried at a better smile. "I can take it, promise."
< < I would advise against this. The shield is ready to fall. > >
Real heroes don't back down even when the chances are slim. Haven't you been sifting through my Hercules memories?
< < I put the utmost effort in ignoring your childish obssession frankly. > >
I can't back down if I really want to prove myself capable. I have to take risks.
"That's okay, one bad swing'll happen every once in a while," Stormy cheered him. "Try again! I won't break."

The sharpness of her tone took him aback, Gale flinching ever so slightly, though he hastily recomposed his features to look as though he were merely easygoing about the whole situation. He gave her a nod and shifted positions a little, carting the rifle around as though it were a bat.
<< I know what she told you, but be careful. She looks tired. >>
I know.
He swung the rifle around.
