As soon as they reached the edge of the badlands, Ivana made Taren stop and moved to her caravan, where she made sure no light could get through the window coverings or under the door and lay on her mattress.Once he was sure Ivana was secure inside her caravan, Taren continued into the badlands, grateful for the shade his sister had woven to go over the front edge of the caravan and protect him from the harshness of the sun. Despite his pyrotechnic abilities, he was as sensitive to the sun and the heat as anyone.

[Sorry for making ye wait.] The revelation from Solana silenced Quinn and sobered his thought. When he got into a rant like that the things he said only got stranger the more he spoke. It was best she shut him up before he said something really offensive. Still, he did not like the now tense silence. He opened his mouth to ask her about the mage, but before he could speak a loud explosion sounded from over the hill they were climbing. Quinn was instantly on edge. His squad would have heard that, and turned back to investigate. There was no chance of him subtly rejoining their ranks now. More importantly, what had caused such a powerful bang?

Sol managed to control her horses. "What the h*** was that," she snarled. The noise would draw attention and only an idiot would do such a thing. She had not calmed the horses with the reigns however. She'd done it with a bit of her magick.

The horses pulling the joined caravans spooked, rearing back. "Whoa! Easy there, easy!" Taren kept a firm hold on the reins, trying to calm the horses. Once he got them calmed, he looked in the direction of the explosion. "What the hell was that?" He turned the horses toward the sound.

'I don't know,' Quinn answered. He had noticed the horses calming down much faster than a spooked animal normally would, but pushed this peculiarity to the back of his mind. Unholstering his pistol, he jumped down from the wagon and dashed up the hill, without another word to Solana. He took cover behind a tree and peaked over the ridge, and was surprised by the scene of carnage. One body was impaled on a cactus; another lay mangled against a rock. A small crater was etched into the forest floor, tendrils of smoke rising from it. In the middle of this scene stood a lone warrior. It was the man who had rescued his fellow recruit earlier. Quinn did not know who this man or any of his opponents were, or who they fought for, but for now he would trust the warrior. He lowered his pistol and stepped into view. 'Um ... do you need any help?'

Sol followed him in her cart. She jumped down when she got there, the horses stopping on their own. "Huh," she said, looking around. "Nice job. A bit excessive but still." She stretched and petted Nero, calming the nervous horse.

Himura winced as he turned, revealing the shallow cuts on his upper right arm and chest as well as a darkening bruise on his chest just below the left collarbone. "They had a magick user amongst them, though frankly I'm not sure why they attacked. I there one of my daggers at the magick user, then... the next thing I know the ground imploded for some reason, with him at the core of the blast," he said wryly as his own forementionedweapon lay near the cactus near the other impaled man; he had noticed the blackened and scorched blade of the nefarious magick user's spear near the heart of the crater, evidence of his words. A low groan rolled up the steep hillside nearby, which said magick user had tumbled down. He was certain the man's spear haft had shattered, most likely impaling the fool.

Taren came over a hill and saw another caravan with a few people standing near it, two men and a woman, and dead bodies strewn around one of the two men. "Whoa. Looks like someone set off a mine. Didn't know any of those things were still active." He halted the horses and hopped down from the driver's seat of his caravan. "You all okay over there?" he called.

Himura rolled his eyes. "Does it look like it?" he grumbled as he shot a look towards Taren unconsciously, wincing slightly as he put a hand over his abdomen to cover the deeper cuts on his body, which fortunately were fewer than the shallower scrapes.

The newly arrived caravan did not surprise Quinn. It and the man who steered it were the most normal things he had seen all day. He looked at the warrior who had one hand over his abdomen. He had not escaped the fight unscathed, but none of the injuries looked life-threatening. At least, none that were visible. 'He just needs some patching up,' Quinn called to the caravanner. He walked past the warrior, heading down the hillside, where a groan had risen from a moment before. 'Thanks for helping my friend before,' he muttered. 'You take a breather. I'll see if I can drag this last guy up for questioning.'

Himura shrugged as he turned away, not really caring about the man's friend. "Your friend needs to grow a spine, otherwise his next foray out here will be his last," he muttered back.

Taren walked around to Ivana's caravan and knocked lightly on the door, waiting for a sound from her before opening it and making sure to block as much of the light as he could with his body. "Ivana, where do you keep the medical supplies? There's a wounded man out there who needs help."Ivana kept herself cocooned in her woven blankets but poked out an arm and pointed toward the front end of her caravan. "Your caravan," she mumbled. "Put 'em there 'fore we left camp.""Thanks, sis." He went back to his own caravan and found the small medical kit. It was mostly filled with woven bandages and a little bit of actual medicine. It was hard to find medicines nowadays. It was a good thing Ivana had some healing magic. He took the kit and urged the horses closer to the group, then hopped down from the caravan again. "Here. I've got bandages if you need them," he said, gesturing with the kit.

Quinn jogged down the hill and quickly found the only survivor among the warrior's opponents. He had tumbled down the hill, getting badly bruised, before falling on the head of his own spear. Snapped halfway up the shaft, it stood upright, running through the man's lower back and out alongside his sternum, thus suspending him in agony a foot above the ground. Blood dribbled from his lips as he tried to cry out, but only a groan escaped. Quinn winced at the horrific state of the man, but did what he could to help him. He took his arms and pulled him to his feet, so that his body was no longer pressing down on the spear. Leaning the man against his shoulder, he reached around and took hold of the spear just below the entry wound. Though the spear had snapped, the lower half of it was still hanging on by a splinter, pulling on the half impaling the man. Quinn put his other hand on this dead weight and snapped it off. Better to leave the other half in him for now, he thought. If I remove it he could bleed to death. He pulled the man's arm over his should and started the hill-climb to rejoin the others. Hopefully this man would answer any questions the warrior had.

Sol watched it all silently. She didn't know what else to do. None of them seemed to be paying attention to her. "Well Nero looks like we could slip away," she whispered to her horse. He snorted in agreement. "I know and you and Avarice don't like the badlands." Sol petted his nose as she talked to the horse and it talked back to her. It would have looked odd to anyone looking at her but no one was looking at her as far as she knew.
