Tari seemed more upset than Turin himself right now. He was in pain, yes, but there was an odd haze over his brain, it seemed. Perhaps his body's defense mechanism kicking in to combat the intense pain. Perhaps adrenaline, though that was starting to fade, leaving a strange disconnected feeling behind in its wake. Perhaps shock.

As she finished, seeming frustrated by her efforts, he reached for her hand comfortingly. He had a vacant sort of smile on his face, murmuring, "It's okay. It'll all be okay. You saved me, Tari." He was reluctant to let go of her hand, but did so anyway, as she tried to prep him to move.

Moving. Right. Important. Had to move...somewhere. The shifting about prompted him to try flipping his tail to help...which only brought forth a new wave of pain. He groaned weakly, closing his eyes as Tari started to hum softly. As he wasn't actively trying to fight the effects this time, a wave of peace instantly washed over him. He relaxed into Tari's hold, her arm supporting his back carefully. His own had somehow found its way around her, and subconsciously he leaned into her like an upset child seeking comfort in a mother's embrace. His eyes had drifted shut, and though he still hurt, he felt light, at peace, and relaxed, as much as one could be given the situation.

Murmuring nonsense to himself as he started to drift off, under Tari's spell, he rested his head on her shoulder, face hidden against her neck.

Tariel clearly did not think this plan through. Once Turin had conked out completely, he became dead weight and was infinitely harder to drag along. "I'm not going to get anyway. We need a safe place to rest." she muttered out loud. The circumstances were terrible, but Tari smiled, noting this was the first time she's ever seen Turin sleep. It was cute the way he murmured as he dozed off.

She swam at the diagonal towards the surface for a short time before deciding that continuing on was not going to make her bad idea any better. Shelter. She needed to find them some shelter for even just the night. There was nothing around except the rocky bottom of the island and those holes. Maybe one was just a cave and not a burrow for a beastie like Turin had suggested. They didn't have many options at this point. Deciding to take her chances, she swam towards the holes, keeping herself aware of anything that might seem out of the ordinary. The holes didn't seem to be dangerous ... they looked natural actually, not carved out. That was a good sign. Maybe it was air in the island escaping as it settled that made them? Yeah, that was comforting enough to convince her this was an okay idea.

She was able to look into them, and see a fair distance, so she shopped around to find one that didn't look too deep, but enough to hide. She found one that seemed to have a large cave behind it's tiny opening that didn't look used as anything. There were no signs fish were dwelling inside, and the entrance was big enough for a Naiad to fit, but not a bigger predator like a shark or giant octopus. Though a regular octopus could fit no problem.

They'd fit only one at a time, so she positioned the unconscious Turin into the hole, putting him head first. He was out, so he'd not feel this pain, she hoped. She sung, just to be safe and keep him out. If he only knew what she was doing to him right now, he'd probably kill her. Once for not listening, and again for treating him like a rag doll to push him in the hole. He might kill her a third time for good measure.

Once safely inside the cave, she laid Turin out flat, being ginger with him to make up for the rough shove through the hole. She inspected his injuries and noted that the seaweed was falling off. With Turin safely in this hole, it might be a good idea to go find more. Maybe if she could take a few extra minutes she could find other things they could use to survive the trek back to the top of the island. This cursed island.

With her trident in hand, she left the cave. Several yards out, she stopped and looked back, memorizing the holes, the pattern and the location of the cave she left Turin in. He will kill me if he ever finds out I did this...

---

While she was out scavenging, she found some stronger seaweed, and a school of fish, so she threw her trident through the center of it, figuring she'd at least get one, if not a couple. She returned to the cave with three fish on her trident trines, a bunch of seaweed and a large rock. Using her trident to prop the rock up, she used it to block the entrance to the cave, then proceeded to replace the seaweed on Turin's injuries. The fish was wrapped in one of the seaweed leaves to save for when he woke up, so they'd have food for energy. Tariel figured they were as safe as they would get, so it might be good if she tried to get a little sleep too. She curled up next to Turin, hoping her body heat would help keep him warm too while his body started the healing process. She hummed a familiar lullaby for her own peace of mind.

She only hoped she woke up before Turin, so she could get him out of there before he found out she didn't follow his directions to avoid these caves.

The pain was the first thing to return, unfortunately. Even before it awoke him, Turin groaned and shifted in his sleep, consciousness slow to return. When it did, he couldn't be sure if he was still asleep or awake; it was pitch dark. Well, except for the pain. That was a definite clue that leaned him towards 'awake'. At least he wasn't dead.

He was still hazy on recent events and having trouble figuring out just where he was. It was much too dark to see anything, but he was lying down, rough stone beneath him. The space seemed small, only enough room for him and...

His brain caught up, realizing he wasn't alone here. There was someone else...and it didn't take him long to realize just who it was lying beside him. Curled up at his side. Her arm draped over the uninjured portion of his chest. He swore for a moment that she would wake up simply from the way his heart sped up. No, calm, Turin...despite all this...you've got more serious problems. He remembered that much.

Trying to slow his breathing once again, he found it easier than usual...it helped he was exhausted and just breathing felt like hard work right now. He didn't even think about trying to get up, even if Tari hadn't been lying there with him. He didn't want to wake her, but...he needed to know what was going on. Where were they? What was the situation? What next?

Not that he felt capable of much other than lying here on his back at the moment.

With some reluctance, and more effort than he'd have hoped, he lifted one hand to shake her shoulder gently. "...Tari? Wake up, Tari...where are we?" his voice was soft, but strained, rough, as if weighed down with the recent pain and exhaustion.
PostPosted: Sun Mar 17, 2013 9:21 pm

Tariel was normally a very heavy sleeper. Well, since she moved into the temple in the lake, anyhow. All her needs and safety were taken care of there, so she could afford to let herself drift into heavy sleep. Today however, she was sleeping light, like she used to when they lived in the palace in the open Sea, not protected by an island with a mind of its own.

When Turin shook her shoulder, she sprung up, startled, "Who's what where?" She twisted in the small space and her tail flicked the trident that had been propping up the stone covering the entrance to the hiding hole she found. The rock fell backwards into the small cave and landed on Tariel's fin. "Ack!"

The hole illuminated a small circle on the rocky floor.

It took a moment for Tariel's thoughts to catch up after being asleep, and she remembered she had planned to just shut her eyes for a few minutes, and wake up before Turin so she could pull him out so he wouldn't know she'd shoved them both inside of this cave for shelter. Her plans haven't been working very well today.

"I found us a place to rest. How are you feeling?" She had to sit up and physically move the rock off her fin because it was too big to flick in this small space. Turning, she put her hand on Turin's forehead to feel for temperature. "I have food for us." Gingerly, she reached across Turin, mindful of his injuries and picked up the bundled fish. "It's not much, but it should help."

Thank goodness he's not freaking out and mad at me.

Turin started trying to raise himself to a sitting position, then stopped at the wave of intense pain. What had it been? A few hours at most? Yeah, at most. He figured he'd stopped bleeding at least, with Tari's help, but if he tried to move much at this point, he'd likely tear his wounds open again and that was no good. At least if he wasn't pouring blood into the water, they might be able to rest here for a bit like she'd said.

"Hurts," he answered bluntly, cringing and settling for only moving enough to rest his shoulders and head against the upward curve of the cave wall. Her hand felt cool against his forehead, though that may have just been his imagination. He was worried about her tail just now, but she seemed to shrug it off and resume fussing over him instead. It was an odd feeling, but not an entirely unpleasant one.

"You've been busy," he murmured, trying to smile despite the pain. "Food...shelter...took care of it all." A tentative touch confirmed his suspicions. "Found more seaweed too, I guess. Good; keep me from bleeding out and giving us away here," he tried to joke, but it was painful even to his ears.

The little bit of light filtering into the entrance allowed him to seek her out. "Tari?" He hesitated, not sure why, because this wasn't the time for pride, that was certain. "...thanks. I'm pretty sure...I owe you my life," he managed to get out before dropping his eyes downward. Even in this darkness, he couldn't pretend to meet her gaze. "I was supposed to be protecting you," he admitted with shame. "I couldn't even do that right. I'm sorry."
PostPosted: Sun Mar 24, 2013 4:28 pm

Tariel smirked at him as she unwrapped the fish and handed one to him. If he only knew how she made him fall asleep so she could do this to help them, he'd likely be upset with her. "Don't be silly, Turin. You are in no shape for the trek around the island. I got you into this mess, I will make damn sure I get you out of it in one piece-" she stopped herself, realizing what a terrible job of that she's been doing. "Sorry. This is all my fault, and I need to do what I can to fix it." She started choking up, wanting to cry now, her mood taking a complete nosedive.

She couldn't eat her fish even if she wanted now. Guilt washed over her, and she couldn't fight it as self-pity reared its ugly head. "We're going to die out here, all because I couldn't handle things on my own. You've done your best trying to protect me, but it's my job to protect you. It always has been." Thoughts of failure crept into the forefront of her mind again, reminding her of why they're in this mess in the first place.

She put a hand on the seaweed wrappings on Turin to make sure they were still tight. She didn't see any more blood in the water. "I know it hurts. But do you think you're up for some swimming? We need to get home. The palace is probably in an uproar by now." And I don't want to linger any longer and risk you getting hurt anymore.

"I'm so sorry, Turin," she whispered, reaching for his hand. "I owe you my life, so I'm just doing what I can to not make things worse. Promise me we'll make it back home soon, okay?"

She began to wonder how soft living in the lake has made them all, because these waters were never this dangerous and terrifying to her, so why now? They were brave, fearless fighters, never backing down from a challenge or a hunt. They knew these waters like the back of their fins. Why did they seem so foreign now? If they did make it back safely, things were going to change as far as training went. No more letting the Naiads go soft and more training in the open sea, that's for sure. She'd send notice to Itsaso and Anatolio immediately. Tariel also decided that they'd take better care of the ocean around the lake instead of pretending a tragedy didn't occur. Their negligence has caused the damage to fester under the island.

Turin accepted the fish gratefully. He was still exhausted, but maybe a little food would help. He hoped so, because he wasn't good for much of anything at the moment. He gingerly started picking at the fish, eating slowly so as not to make himself sick. It may not be the most refined meal, but food was food.

He let Tariel speak, but he wasn't feeling any better about himself. When she paused long enough for him to interrupt, he did so. "Your job? Makes me a pretty shitty bodyguard then if it's your job to protect me. Guess that makes me about as useless as I feel right now," he replied bitterly. He wasn't completely blind. He knew full-well that essentially, they were in this mess because Tari decided to run away...but he wasn't holding her to that. Even if it wasn't the best decision at the time, it was still his job to go along and protect her. He was beating himself up for not managing to do so.

She seemed to be beating herself up about as badly, he noted. He took her hand when she reached for his, frowning. Could he promise that? Without lying? He wasn't sure what else they might face at this rate, and he'd effectively been taken out already by a freakishly-sized set of teeth with a tail. And yet, as long as he could still move...at least he'd be a distraction. He lifted her hand to his lips for a chaste kiss. "I promise, no matter what it takes, I'll get you back home, Tari."

To answer her earlier question, no, he didn't feel like swimming. He could barely move. He was still worried about tearing his wounds open again, but also, he just didn't have the energy. Perhaps the fish would help enough though to get them going. "Maybe just a bit longer before we go," he muttered. He was eager to get back as well, but a few minutes longer wouldn't make a difference at this point.

Still woozy, Turin tried to shift position a bit, if only to get away from a bit of rock between his shoulders. He winced at the effort, but managed to find something more comfortable before sinking back with a tired sigh. "Tari?" he asked in a quiet voice, unaware he was still holding her hand. He wasn't sure why it started to bother him now; maybe he was more out of it than he realized. It would be hard to tell if his eyes were glazed, or just unfocused in the darkness down here. "Can I ask you something?" He seemed to pause, then not waiting for an answer, plunged ahead. "Did you mean what you said before? In your letter, I mean..."

Tariel wanted to smack Turin for saying something so self-deprecating. "I wasn't putting you down, I meant it in the sense I have to protect all Naiad. Which... I fail at on a regular basis it seems." Her tone was defeated.

She watched him pick at his fish, feeling so bad about everything, and wondering if they managed to get back home, if he'd hate her. "Maybe you should get more rest. It'd be better to be closer to full strength so we can just push forward, than to struggle the whole way. I'll stay up and keep watch."

The thought crossed her mind that maybe pushing him away would be the best solution to everything. He'd not be in mortal danger anymore, and he could be with Kelebek and family safe in the palace. She knew why all of this was happening to them, and why he was taking the brunt of the hits, and not her; that stupid curse. She needed to find a way to turn off her feelings.

Turin's question caught her completely off guard and she just stared beyond him, at a small spot on the wall as her mind raced a million miles a second, trying to figure out what to say or how to explain it. That letter. She'd hoped the subject wouldn't come back up. She had hoped even more he didn't actually read it, but her worst fears in regards to that letter were coming true.

Panic mode. She could feel her breathing becoming shallow and quick and her heart raced. Is that why he was chasing after her so fervently, protecting her down the vortex? No, that was his job, his duty. But how'd he find her so fast?

"I... uhm..." she really was at a loss for words. She dared not look at him for fear he'd read her face, look in her eyes and see her soul. She felt so naked and exposed again. So vulnerable and trapped. This was an easy question on the surface; 'yes' or 'no'. But the repercussions of saying one word or the other could potentially last her lifetime. "I uhm, wrote that ... thinking I'd never see you again." She went with honesty. He likely already hated her so, why not. Get the humiliation out of the way.

She glanced at the hole in the wall, considering swimming away. But she couldn't leave him here in this condition. She owed him that, as much as it was humiliating for her to bear her soul to him. Especially under these circumstances.

"Yes I did," she whispered, hanging her head.

Turin simply nodded, seeming to take time to absorb this. He was otherwise quiet, though he struggled momentarily to sit up, the wall still at his back, but more upright than he'd been in some hours likely. "Yeah, okay...rest, probably a good idea," he murmured after a time.

The bandages had done their job thus far, preventing further bleeding while the wounds clotted, but they had another side effect. Unless one was looking for it, the heat from the inflamed wounds would go unnoticed. Whether from the beast's fangs, the water, or even the bandages, some foreign body had thrown the Naiad Captain's system into overdrive. Fortunately, Aernyn Naiads were better equipped to handle such infections, but until it could be completely fought off, Turin's head felt hazy, the delirium muddling his thoughts and weakening the mental blocks that normally steered him far away from topics best left in secret.

In the darkness, he reached up with his free hand to tuck her hair behind her ear fin as her head dropped. It made sense in a way...if they weren't going to see each other again, to want to clear the water...to remove the weight carried for so long from one's soul.

Too much of a burden to carry to the Waters beyond.

He understood completely. He'd promised to get her home safely. He'd made no promise for himself.

Maybe that's why he felt compelled to do the same.

"'S okay, Tari," he answered quietly, and dropped his head close to hers. Was he...slurring slightly? Didn't matter; she didn't have to carry her burdens alone anymore. In a moment of selfishness, Turin didn't want to either. "I'm glad we did see each other again," he continued honestly, a weak smile coming without effort.

"'Fore I rest again," he murmured, "Just wanted to say something. You're very important, Tari. Don't forget. And don't doubt yourself. No matter what's in your way, I know you can do anything you set your mind to. Nothing can get in your way," he half-chuckled. "Important to all Naiad, sure," he nodded, needing to stay on track before he drifted off again. "But, most to me. Most important in all the Waters...and beyond. Always have been. Even before becoming Queen."

Despite the cringe from the movement to do so, he looped his free arm around her back and pulled her to his side. If he didn't make it back...he wanted to get this out now. It was suddenly the most important thing he ever had to do, and the warm haze that had his head all muddled wouldn't let him rest until he did so.

"Never said anything," he muttered, "but, figured it was obvious. You deserved so much better than me though, no need to settle." He half-smiled at the thought, simultaneously amused and saddened as the absurdity of the thought. "It was enough...to be able to stay close to you...watch over you," he admitted, tiredly touching his head to hers. She felt cool against his forehead; another good reason to stay right here where it felt good.

"Just...while we're bein' honest," he slurred, trailing off as he let his eyes drift closed.

Something was really wrong. Tariel couldn't place a finger on it just yet, but nothing about this situation was making any kind of sense anymore. Turin was speaking as if --

No!

When he touched her, it burned. And not in the good way she'd always fantasized about. His head when it touched hers was on fire. He had a fever which means the injuries were infected. He needed rest, but she couldn't let the wounds fester and potentially take his life. What they needed was help. Someone with proper medicine or healing, and someone to carry Turin back. She couldn't go get help, because there was no way she'd find this place again. Besides, the thought of leaving him to die made her chest hurt and muscles convulse.

"I'll get you home, Turin. Please don't give up," she pleaded with him. The things he said did not go unnoticed. It was hard to not want to just wrap herself around him and forget about the world and just be happy. "Please, please!" She clenched his hand tight, and kissed his forehead, feeling the heat again. Just a fever. He won't die. Just a fever. We'll get out of here.

She adjusted herself so she was sitting beside him, and put her arm around his back so his head could rest on her shoulder. She pet his hair back, softly humming and trying to keep the panic from surfacing. She really messed up this time. "Turin, please. Just hang in there, ok? I promise I won't ever do anything stupid like this again. I can't lose you." She was a babbling mess, filling the waters of the caves with her tears.

Her heart was breaking. No matter how the situation resolved itself; tragically or not, she was going to lose him. He knew, at least partially, how she felt if he'd read her letter. She also knew that what he was saying could be fever-induced delirium, so there's a chance he was only speaking because of what was in the letter, and not because he really had a confession to get off his chest. She was torn because it would be so easy to fall in love and let things play out how they should, but she knew also the tragic ending. She told Turin of her curse in that letter, which is something she'd never told any Naiad ever. She was sure Aeroniel may know of it though, it was hard to hide things from her Lady in Waiting.

She took a page from his book, and decided to clear the water. If it is delirium, he'd not remember, and if he did remember, well, at least he'd know why things would have to change. This wasn't the time to relieving her own burdens, but maybe, just maybe ... it'd help him hang on. At least for the moment. They way he talked, she worried he'd given up already.

"Turin, you've become my most important friend. You ... know how I feel if you read my letter." She embraced him tenderly, rubbing his arm to create stimulation to keep him conscious. "Stay with me. Come home with me. I promise we can talk this out." She wasn't sure if she'd be brave enough if they were both healthy, sober and sane. She hoped he'd not remember this conversation.

She hummed soothing melodies, mindful of the urge to mess with his memory. She only wanted him to rest, and not give up on her. She kissed the top of his head, murmuring something that might have been interpreted as "I love you," but it was uttered softly as she tried to softly sing a lullaby to her ill and injured Captain.

The flurry of activity after such a quiet, calm declaration...Turin frowned, stirring from the listless haze he'd fallen under. He'd...upset her? No, that wasn't the purpose...he was supposed to calm her, let her know that no matter what happened, it would be alright...

He started to shift, but found himself being the one held now, and her gentle touch was relaxing, her lips pleasantly cool on his burning skin...why fight it? Besides, it was as close as he'd ever get...

Her soothing voice flowed over him like a calming, cool current, even if he could still hear her panicked notes within. Why was she so upset? He was still here for now, it was alright...he'd get her home; he promised he would. She was making him feel better; what could he do to help her? The groggy Captain relaxed into her hold, drinking in her voice, her words...so soothing...her calming, cool touch...

His head rested on her shoulder already, but he wrapped his arms around her, trying to give her some of the same comfort she gave him. "'S okay, Tari," he murmured, some of the tension from all the stress and pain relaxing from his form. She was so comfortable. "I'm right here. Gonna' get you home safe. Promised," he rambled, his thoughts jumbled by the fever...except for the thought of calming Tari.

She was always first in his thoughts. Always would be.

"'S okay, Tari, 'll be alright," he repeated, burying his face against her neck, which muffled his already soft tones. "...'sides...love you, Tari. Keep my promises too..."
PostPosted: Mon Mar 25, 2013 8:45 pm

Tariel felt Turin's words all the way down to her core, and it warmed her, bringing a feeling of genuine joy and contentment to her soul that she had not felt in a very, very long time. She gave him a reassuring squeeze, and just held on to him. He would make sure they got home. She knew he was good for his promise, and this gave her comfort and faith that this was just a hurdle to get over for now.

It was not easy to calm herself down when all she wanted to do was freak out and find a way to magically just whisk them back home. Turin's suffering was her suffering. Turin mumbled something she couldn't quite make out. She thought she heard her name and 'promises', but something else. Her imagination kept trying to fill in the gaps of what he said. "Hmm? what was that?"

Turin murmured something unintelligible in reply, drifting off to a peaceful, if feverish sleep, cradled in his Queen's arms.

*****

The next time he awoke, he was less hazy in the head than before, though his chest ached dully once more. The actual wounds burned slightly, but in a mildly irritating way, rather than a debilitating one. The Naiad Captain shifted with a groan, slightly stiff and aching, but he thought he'd live. Pretty sure. Now...where was he again...?

He'd had the strangest dream...hazy, yet vivid...'course dreams could be like that. Sensations as clear as if they were real, voices, even the feel of...

Still finding himself in the darkness of the small cavern, with a familiar form curled around his...Turin's face flushed, nothing to do with fever this time. Had...that had been a dream, right?

Right?

Oh Great Waters, let it have been the most vivid, fever-induced hallucination of all time.

Please.

For a moment, he was frozen in fear, afraid to move any further for risk of waking Tariel and having to find out whether he'd only been hallucinating. But, instinct kicked in stronger than personal embarrassment, and the Captain knew that they'd been gone a long time, and holed up in this crevasse for much too long. If he wasn't about to die on them now, they needed to get moving.

Covering only the slightest wince when shifting his torso, he laid a hand on Tariel's shoulder, trying not to flush again at the thought that they'd have to...untangle themselves before they could even get out of here. "...Tari? You awake? Err...it's okay..." he added in a softer voice, thinking, 'Don't wake up in a panic and hurt yourself like last time, please.'
PostPosted: Mon Mar 25, 2013 9:31 pm

Tariel stirred, having finally slept a restful sleep in the two days since she'd last slept comfortably in her bed at the palace. She'd convinced herself things would be okay once Turin had gotten the full amount of rest his body required to get over his fever. Once she was absolutely, one hundred percent sure they were okay, she had allowed herself to sleep. Considering the circumstances, the dreams she had were wildly inappropriate.

"Just a little more ~" she cooed, tightening her embrace and pulling herself closer to Turin, still not awake quite yet.

Not the reaction he'd been expecting, after last time.

Nor did he expect his own reaction to that gentle voice, cooing softly in his ear as she embraced him tightly. He stifled a groan, then flushed and tried to play it off as...his injuries. Yes, that. Still sore and all from being mangled by a pair of giant teeth with a tail attached.

He squirmed a little in the pretense of trying to sit up, if a bit reluctantly, and noted with an odd twinge in his stomach that her graceful tail was draped casually over his ragged fin. Oh for...if anyone back at the palace had seen this...oh Great Waters, the rumors...

Uncomfortable...and perhaps a bit too comfortable at the same time, he directed his gaze away from their bodies and back towards her peaceful, sleeping face. "Come on, Tari," he muttered, reaching up to brush a stray strand of hair from her face. "Time to wake up."

And save him from his embarrassment, hopefully, rather than guaranteeing more.
