Sure, it felt like she had been climbing for hours - the lack of sounds made it remarkably difficult for her to count how far she had gotten.
Then, it happened.
The voice - the thing she was after, that she wished to end, resounded through her mind, making her reel a little, looking up at the stairwell with a reformed anger. I am coming for you, I do not care what you say, you do not own me. She thought out loud, knowing that any words would only resound hollow, never to be heard.

She drew up at the door, reading the words. She wasn't sure precisely what that meant but she entered anyway, and right away she got the meaning. There was nothing. No footfalls. No clothes rustling. She couldn't even hear her own breathing, and she huffed hard on a hand to try.
Well, eerie as it was, it was not getting her anywhere and she began to climb the stairs.
Almost there. He could taste victory at the top of the stairs.
He was almost there.
Unfortunately he had to stop again, breathing hard as he leaned against the wall. He was getting too hot, so he unzipped his coat to leave his bare chest free.

How did it work? How was it possible to erase all sound? The thoughts kept her company, as she continued to noiselessly climb.
And then there was sound, the Voice again. Sounding annoyed. The words made no sense though, not to Arachne. 'I took nothing..' she mouthed, wondering if the Voice could hear what she could not.
Glad that the air was flowing through his jacket and over his body, Etzer breathed a sigh of relief once he reached the top of the stairs.
The Voice spoke again.
"All I ever wanted was to find the True King, and get, the others still stand in my way. I have given them no harm, no trouble, I have waited this long, and my prize is to be betrayed by everything I embrace, again."
Etzer opened his mouth to speak, then realized that he had no voice. It was no matter. He believed what he was doing was right, even if it was for his own sake.
One more step forward, and it brought him closer to his goal.

If anything - she caught herself thinking, about three fourths of the way up - I am getting a good work out. I am rather proud of myself. She mused.
And then she remembered that she was, theoretically, part of the land of Pride.

She continued to slog on up the stairs after hearing the Voice, almost wishing she could hear it again as the lack of sound was starting to wear on her nerves. Something that was taken for granted was all the more noticeable when it was absent, doing all this exertion and hearing nothing was most unsettling.

A feeling of foreboding hit her. The Voice wanted them all up here. Up, at the top of a tower. This sounded remarkably like a giant trap.

She let a few people pass her, before starting up again. And what if it was a trap? The world they were trapped in was dissolving before their very eyes.
Balance yourself like a bird on a beam, in the air, she goes.. There.. she goes..
Her steps quickened. There was never any real choice in the matter. They had to ascend. Ascend, or fall. This world wasn't real, anyway.
If it crumbled, they would just wake up.

She..was..there. Finally, she'd reached the top of this floor. Had that really only been the first one? She was eager to leave, hoping that she would regain her ability to hear when she did so.
She started before she was able to leave though, the Voice spoke again, sounding no less annoyed than it had previously.
I don't care! she yelled in her mind. Everything that had happened was at the Voice's behest, and so the thing had only itself to blame..that was her thought as she moved onto the next floor.
Standing at the top of of the first hundred steps, she had somehow created a game, counting the tens as she went up. It was . . . comforting to have something to keep her occupied.
Hearing the Voice again, mismatched yes looked up to the ceiling over her as she stood at the doorway, a pensive look on her face. If you wanted them to do so, so much, why did you wait until it was a critical moment for such a decision. And War, really?
It just seems so . . . so sloppy, so silly, pulling such lives in for such a selfish reason.
She did not like this Voice. It used such terrible tactics. Frowning, she went to continue, comfortable with her personal answer to it. She would not speak it out loud, for she knew he could hear her thoughts.

Even though people kept walking up, passing her, falling behind, Riley started to realize a little belatedly that she wasn't hearing anything past her own thoughts. No sound at all - and that was disturbing. Her song quieted in her head, and she tried to reach out - but absolutely nothing was going through.
Definitely a trap, then.
The Voice spoke in her head, and it sounded angry. Very angry. She liked that. It spurned her forward even quicker.
