Alina felt every one of those twenty turns when those brilliant eyes looked at her. Bereck had a stare, an intense and bright look she had on her more than once in the past. He didn't like to look just at the surface but rather at Her, everything of her. He knew almost everything about Alina down to favorite foods, how she slept at night, all of it. It came to a point that even two decades later, she knew when he stared at her, the heat of it creeping along her fingertips.
"Thank you, Berath." Alina's already turned rather red, fingertips tugging at the hem of her skirt self conciously. Not everyone in the room had been mauled by a wher but some were always a bit horribly aware of what others may or may not think of her. Bereck... well, he never graced the world with compliments of the flowery sort when caught off guard but what he did manage to get out made her smile, brighter then before and much more akin to the smiles she had twenty two turns previous. "Oh. Well. Good. Yes, go off and change. I'm going to settle down on the blanket."
She scooted towards the blanket and sat, aforementioned long legs crossing to keep some room for him on the blanket. Alina waited.

"Yes. Good." This was said rather awkwardly, and with his cloth bag over his shoulder Bereck limped awkwardly over to Berath so that he could change the other side of her. Just before vanishing behind the huge green however he paused and turned to the fluffy haired blonde again. "Alina... you know, you are still quite perfectly beautiful." Flashing a warmer smile he stepped behind Berath, who rumbled deep in her chest at the sudden flutter of warm feelings in his.
It took Bereck a while longer to change than it had Alina; he had to get all of his clothes off first, and then had to dig out and put on the loose dark blue swimming shorts. As he put his clothes safely back into the bag Berath turned her head to him, and Bereck looked through her eyes. Well, no denying he was a mess. Alina wouldn't mind though... he was almost one hundred percent sure she wouldn't. At least ninety five percent sure and that was good enough to consider most hypothesises proven.
His gut twisted with nerves as he looked at the twisted scars.
They wouldn't go away though and if he didn't hurry up Alina would wonder what was keeping him. Long slow breath in through nose, and out through mouth. Think of a calm ocean; rather easy as he was standing next to one. Really his apprehension was preposterous, and recognising that it was time to go.
He went.
"Well then... would you like to eat first, or swim?" Bereck asked with faintly unstable brightness as he stepped back into view, left arm curled unconsciously over the thick scarring on his right side.

The minutes ticked by slower then she thought minutes ought to, silence reigning save for the sounds of the world. Water lapped at the black rough sand nearby, a slight breeze ruffled blanket and hair alike. she loved it, the serenity, always had. The first to volunteer for any night-watching, Alina found more beauty in the world in these seconds outside in silence then she ever did in the Weyr.
His voice interrupted the calm, but it was just as welcome. Alina stood before she turned, wiping at her thighs and bottom absentmindedly from years of getting dirty while sitting. Ghastly scars stood out in vivid ribbons along his skin, looking deep and thick enough to have scored to bone. Her eyes flickered over them (and the rest of him) quickly and...scars aside, he'd grown thinner from his ordeal, but still substantial and a busy life with a diet of klah appeared to not be a bad one.
Alina smiled, bright, warm, and closed the space between him. Her fingers went back up to his hair for a brief pet, lips finding cheek before he could say anything else. "You're looking fit. I'm entitled to think what I think, before you go off doubting me." She leaned back a little, shoulders and head, to studdy his face. Fingers fluttered to rest on his curled arm, eyes curious. "May I?"

She looked... he wasn't sure what she looked like. She was looking though and saying nothing and-
Smiling.
Bereck relaxed a little as she moved over to him and offered affection just as she had a few minutes ago. "Comparatively fit, I'll grant you," he responded with affable gruffness after a moment, his lips showing the ghost of a smile as he looked up at her.
And she wanted to touch the scars.
Well.
"...Here." Uncurling his arm he took hold of her curious hand and brought it gently to the thick scarring on his side. "Just be gentle, they're hypersensitive," he added, breaking eye contact because... well, he had her hand on his bare skin; that was easily excuse enough to feel abruptly shy, or it was in his book anyway.

"We're both comparatively fit, we're old. It happens." She smiled and shifted in closer again. He took her hand the same as he always did, fingers warm and caring. They reached for his side as she had so many times in their youth seconds before he scooped her up for a kiss or a carry. This time was comfort, not sex. Curiousity and intimacy rather then anything else. "I won't hurt you, Ber."
She touched the scars the same way she would delicate parchment. Gentle fingertips ghosted over the first inch of scarring, brushing over the seam between healed and dead flesh. The Starcrafter didn't gawk at the scars, she glanced once again to hand and side, but her attention remained focused in on the man. Alina leaned in closer to him while her fingers moved, slowly and with purpose.
Lips pressed to his cheek again, then the curve of jaw and ear. Alina didn't pull away but nuzzled his ear, closer then before when her hand curled along his back to continuing the trail of battle wounds. "I love everything about you." Is all she said, and kissed his neck, not moving away, resting, and quiet.

He was tense at first but relaxed by slow degrees when she was as good as her word. So strange, having somebody ghost fingers over the twisted tissue, strange and... comforting, somehow. It was the wordless acceptance he supposed, his eyes closing as she kissed his cheek.
...Everything.
Bereck's smiled warmed and softened, and he rested his brow on her shoulder. "Love everything about you too, my Star," he murmured softly, sliding his arms around her, enjoying the closeness. He had been right; she didn't care in the least. It was a relief to have that demonstrated, and to hear it said.
Forget the rest of the evening, he could quite happily just stay like this. He could feel her breathing, and her breath against his skin. Comfort and intimacy with nothing more asked, nothing more needed. Today was perfect.

"If I could take your hurt away, I would." She murmured with another dotted kiss to his throat. Alina didn't want to let go of him, not ever and certainly not now. Her hand pressed to an unscarred part of his back, her other arm wrapping around his shoulders to cup the back of his head. "I would, Ber. Anything. I know that sounds creepy but it's true."
Tightening her grip would be bad.she kept where she was instead, nose pressed to his neck. She let out a slow breath, shoulders sagging. "Promise I'm not crying or anything. You are just ridiculously comfortable and..." A helpless shrug, fingertip moving over each bump of his spine. "I've missed this. S'all I can think sometimes."

Bereck freed one arm from Alina for long enough to take off his glasses and toss them carelessly aside. Probably a firelizard would catch them, if not they might land on the blanket or just manage to avoid being scratched by the sand. Right now though he didn't care much about glasses, or anything much other than the women running her fingers soothingly down his back.
"It doesn't sound creepy," he replied, snuggling close and pressing his brow against her shoulder again, more comfortably without the glasses. "Thank you." Those two words might have sounded a little lame if not for their genuine tone; he understood her sentiment, and appreciated it. "I'm glad I'm comfortable... and if I could I'd Time back seventeen odd years and tell myself to go and talk to you before you left for Landing. We can't do those things, but we've got now and we're both alive. I'm not going anywhere in a hurry."
As he spoke he felt Berath coiling around his mind, and smiling a little he reached back. He had shut her out too much for so long when he'd been ill, and snapped at her so often since for no good reason. She forgave him though and soaking up that feeling he felt able to forgive himself as well, for the moment at least.
Sitting a little way back from the couple the scarred green smiled as much as a dragon could and her eyes gleamed bluer than the desert skies of Igen in the dying light of evening. Happiness. Peace. He didn't feel those things enough, especially together both at once, and so Berath too enjoyed the quiet moment. Life was good.

Alina smiled, welcoming him back closer with a shift and her fingers continuing to pet up and down his spine. Feet shuffled on dark sand, toes moving to press over his gently. She felt silly and a little stupid, being much too old for such displays. It didn't matter, though, not with him right there and being so lovely. And he was. Bereck could be nothing but lovely and Alina would put marbles in the shoes of those who said otherwise. He cared about everything. About her.
"Past is the past," she murmured against him, her fingers rubbing at the base of his neck. "That would be the most awkward conversation in the history of words, though. 'Run back to your girlfriend, she still loves you! Do it now, or I will make you roll bandages.' or some such silliness. I would have been very confused if I saw you dragging yourself in by the ear."
She bent lower and nuzzled again, voice something more along the lines of a quiet sigh. "Do you still want to swim, love?"

"I'd probably ask myself what the shards I'd done to my hair, and then worry about the integrity of space and time. I'm fairly sure you're not supposed to meet yourself when you Time." All of this was murmured absently as Bereck enjoyed the gentle neck rub.
Swimming.
Yes, he had wanted to do that.
"Mmmh, yes." Lifting his head from Alina's shoulder Bereck lent up to kiss her cheek briefly and nodded. "A swim sounds perfect; the water should be nice and warm," he elaborated. He wasn't sure he really wanted to break this embrace though; the moment was perfect.
The moment was then interrupted slightly by Sanguine landing lightly on his shoulder. Giving a friendly 'squeep!' she nuzzled Alina's hand and blinked up at her with soft blue eyes. Apparently taking the dominant flitt's actions as an invitation to approach the pair Vena then landed on Alina's shoulder. Iris meanwhile landed on her head, which Carp took as a cue to land on Bereck's.
Bereck looked up at Alina with as much dignity and seriousness as a man with a firelizard on his head was capable of projecting. "I may need to work on command for situations like this." Firelizards running intimate moments was not something he wanted to become a pattern.

"As long as you remembered to come get me." Alina kissed his hair again, his ear, and continued the neck rub until he kissed her cheek. The Starcrafter smiled and stepped back, her hand sliding to cup his square jaw, thumb rubbing against his cheek. Bereck received a look that radiated only love and a brilliant happiness. "A swim--"
and then suddenly flits. Alina blinked when Sanguine first landed, her fingers moving to rub at the little firelizard just seconds before the rest of them started their inevitable descent. She squeaked, wincing a little at the sudden weird, and especially when Rukbat took a position on her other shoulder.
"... I rather hope they won't do this each time we're half naked and in each others arms kissing." She said, dryly, and stepped back and away from Bereck. Her eyes crossed and went up to try and look at the firelizard on her head, lips quirkin. "I think you may. It may make flirting somewhat awkward. Also, I can feel the prickles."

"You're awful," Bereck snorted, waving the firelizards away to go and join Berath. "Awful, and correct," he added with a crooked little smile. The moment might have been slightly interrupted but he didn't really mind, would find it hard to mind anything much at the moment. He felt enlivened, warm, and secure.
"Shall we go then?" the healer asked, making a small gesture to the water before reaching out to request an arm to lean on again.

"If I weren't a little awful, you'd never have stayed with me for even a turn." She laughed, slim arm sliding through his. Alina walked slowly, keeping close to her - partner? Lover? weyrmate? None of those fit except maybe partner, but as long as she could call him 'hers', the life she lived was a good one. "Let us be off, dear."
Her head tilted closer to him, lips curled into a contemplative, small smile. she smiled often lately. Silly, trite, she loved it. Sand crunched under her feet, up through her toes with the sandals off on the blanket. The water, while cooler then the air, still felt very comfortable when they reached it.
"Remember your promise - no laughing at me." She turned and grinned at him again before they starte dinto the water.

Leaning on her again was a little easier this time; his good mood cushioned the pang of needing help. "I remember," was the healer's reply, coupled with a squeeze to the starsmith's arm. "And I keep my promises."
The water was as pleasant as he had hoped, both in temperature and just in the familiar feeling of wet sand between his toes and the familiar sighing sound of it. The ocean, and Alina beside him. History did repeat itself, occasionally for the better. "Do you remember when we used to go swimming in the sea at Malvren?" Bereck asked as they moved deeper. "There was one time when I had seaweed on my head for five minutes before I worked out what you were laughing at." The turn or so they had spent together was burned into his memory like elegant pyrography. He'd fallen fast, and hard. He had never believed himself capable of such passion. He'd believed that people who fell so wildly in love in such short periods of time were fools. Perhaps this was true but if so he was, and had been, a very happy fool.

She sighed as they waded deeper, muscles relaxing with the swish and pull of the water. Her fingers brushed over Bereck's arm in an echo of a woman walking down the aisle. She leaned closer to him, the water giving a bit of bounce to her step. Well, as much of a bounce one could get while in the water.
"I remember! Your hair was still auburn," she turned and looked at him with the same fond smile. "And the seaweed was dark green. It looked like someone had dumped mud on you. Your face... It was wonderful. Like, you were trying to be angry and then ended up just laughing. I fell into the water." She laughed, leaning in and kissing his cheek. "We can find some seaweed if you'd like. Or I can ask you horrible things that will make you want to shove me into the water."
Alina shifted away from him a bit to scoop up a handful of water and ribble it on his unwounded shoulder. "Such as, how far down does that one scar go? I can't see it."
