I did have another idea that's been simmering due to someone else's old I/T. (I'm sorry, I forgot whose it was!) It would go along with the seven families/clans idea. It also goes along with the desire for nature-affinity. The rough idea was as follows:
Rock - firm and determined
Water - intelligent and creative
Wood - logical and adaptable
Earth - patient and giving
Fire - strong and physical
Air - active and energetic
Spirit - sensitive and emotional
Blue's idea of the families being known for certain ranks/jobs could go well with something aligned along this sort of idea. Perhaps each clan would have the basic ranks necessary, then have something they specialize in, Kimaria was mentioning. The head of each family (could be male or female) would have a seat on a ruling council. They could do something similar to what the Ela do, which is have the different families roam an overall pack territory, thus giving them a semblance of autonomy. Each family would take on newcomers, adopting them via rituals to become one of Water, or one of Spirit, whatever. The above descriptions would not be absolute, merely what they are inclined towards.
I'm not sure what the best means to pass down the council seat for each family, since all members would be 'related'. That would give the current family matron or patron the ability to choose a successor, whether related by blood or not? Just a thought.
This idea does get away from it being based on color or pattern, but stays with other themes that seem to have been popular thus far. Any additions, alterations, or thoughts on it are welcome!

I like that idea, Tal. Jobs that align with elements is neat, as is the idea you and Kim had that leaders are chosen or elected for their position. By not having it determined by birth, it OOCly makes things a lot easier. If someone disappears, after a certain amount of inactivity they can be retired and another take their place. There is also potential drama when two dogs want the same position, either with open fighting or more covert means.
The only changes I might make to your list, Tal, is to switch out maybe metal for rock? Rock is pretty close to earth, and SoA do know about metal.
Each family could have their own home base, but it might be easier on rp if there was a community place to mingle between houses. The Ela sometimes have it harder because some clans tend to be rather far from each other, depending on where they're traveling at the time.
And, if say one family does the hunting, they would need a way to get the food back to the pack for everyone to share.
Also, having talismans or some other nicknack they wear would be a good way for a large pack to be able to tell at a glance who belongs to which house.

I really like those ideas, Blue... especially about the talismans! The bestowing of said talisman would be perfect for the adoption ceremony, something to be worn proudly. I was trying to think of what it might be, but I'm not feeling well atm, so my ideas are rather limited. The only options I can think were either a necklace of some sort, or something piercing the ears?

It could potentially be up to the house. One could have an earing, one a bracelet, one a necklace, one with a different type of earing, etc.

Perhaps a gourd or a water skin of some sort for water. Feather pendant or earring for air...

Fire and spirit would be the hardest, I'd think. ::mulling:: Maybe use spider webs for spirit? Something different and ethereal-looking. For fire, I'm sort of stumped. Any ideas out there?

You could use different colours and not different materials perhaps? Something fire coloured? Face painting for spirit?

Hmm. Perhaps different colored feathers? Feathers should be pretty easy to acquire, I'd think, and would come in all sorts of different colors. The different colors could represent the different families' nature aspects?
Metal - yellow
Water - blue
Wood - brown
Earth - grey
Fire - orange
Air - white
Spirit - black
EDIT: That would allow them to put it where they like too... ear, cuff, neck, tail, whatever.

I'm gonna hold back on my idea, as yours is pretty awesome and Blue seems to agree C:, but I'd love to be apart of it if that's possible.
I like the idea of different coloured feathers, but also the idea of the talismans. Maybe the feathers could be used until adolescent, and then they are expected to find their talisman or craft it? Feathers could be easily given to cubs, and then as an adult they could find a talisman to reflect their "house" and their individual character?
So they could have anything, provided it included the "talisman", this gives an opportunity for necklaces, braces, earrings, bracelets, shields, head garments, etc? C:

Metal - yellow / plain bronze bracelets/small piece of armour? Maybe use bronze as a colour for the house, so others can still have metal/armour just in a different colour? Or bronze with a simple symbol/inscription?
Water - blue / Water bottle/pouch/vial?
Wood - brown / wooden bracelets / pendant
Earth - grey / flowers/vines?
Fire - orange / red/orange gems/stones?
Air - white / they could retain their feather, but have it woven into something more complex, and pick a variety of feathers if they wish?
Spirit - black / LOVE the spider web idea for this, or maybe fabric capes/caplets or fabric bracelets?
or, they could have a small vial or pouch, holding a substance that pertains to their house? or a glass pendant with the talisman in, or even just a colour?

I really like the idea of using feathers for the young ones, and adults must find/craft their own talismans. This would work for when someone wanted to change families as an adult, or married cross-family? Then they could keep their feathers to show what family they'd been born into, alongside their adult talisman! You've got a good point for metal's color, but... I dunno. I wouldn't want to limit the talismans they could make for themselves for their family, since pelts can be various colors, as well as other things. Like grey is hard to find. (That color might need to be changed... to red, perhaps, for clay/terracotta?)

Yeah, for marrying etc they could change feathers or keep their maiden one in and weave it into the talisman? I thought it was a nice idea for development /plot points etc, similar to a swampies name quest? C: Terracotta would be nice for earth but I'm not sure how it would go as a talisman, hmm..

Well, I was more meaning terracotta is kinda red, so would be why the Earth family would have red as it's color, yanno?

Haha, of course, yeah. That makes sense. For some reason my brain was trying to make terracotta into a talisman and I was thinking of SoA with plant pots on their heads..
We could always use green for earth, too?
