I"m going to sit this one out. ^^; I'm not into tranformations and such.

Really? I thought you would have a blast with this one. stare Doesn't have to be a transformation at the end of it anyway, the prompt is pretty open ended.

lolno, i'm just saying that you have your mind so made up on having your character transform into something else when partaking in the food; i am merely reiterating what viper has said: the prompt is open ended, there are a plethora of outcomes, of plots, etc.

Yes that's true. There are a ton of ideas and fields you can go with. xD lol like someone becoming a statue if they drank from the silver fountain, or them becoming a giant. Re-reading it, I kind of wonder how people will approach this. The plot kind of oddly has a Hansel & Gretle feel to it.

Fantasy prompts are my fav as they give the most to work with and are often the most fun to read.

Heck if you ever get bored of entering the contest SD, you could help generate more prompts for later use. We got a thread in the hidden hideout just for them and I know you probably have a billion ideas bouncing around your head waiting to be used. 3nodding

I might not make this month, college has me doing a lot of writing so I'm pretty burned out of it. I'll try and squeeze something out if I can but no guarantees.

May 2013
The prompt (#4) is...

Your character/s have been travelling a long distance and have come across a cottage set in a pleasant glade deep in the mountains. There are two ornate fountains outside the front door, the one on the left spilling silver liquid and the one on the right spilling golden liquid. Furthermore, on a pedestal beneath a shady tree lies a large crimson apple with what appears to be a crust of sugar crystals. The door to the cottage is ajar but nobody seems to be home. Your character/s are thirsty and wish to take a drink and that apple looks like the most delicious fruit they have ever seen. What happens when they decide to partake in some of them? Why were they travelling in the first place? And who could this mysterious cottage belong to? What sort of magical things might happen to your characters?

Tell us in a short story about a page or so (or less).

May 2013 WINNER

There was once a young couple in their early twenties: much in like, much in love with each other. They enjoyed one another's company, it was hard not to see. Their love was physical, their love emotional, their love psychological, their love metaphysical. Their relationship was like one that spurned forth from the loins of the most bombastic, extraordinary story. It was magical. The other denizens of their mountainous village could distinguish them from the rest of the couples with just a glance. They could feel that magical love in the air. They basked in it. They worshipped it; however, there was a large amount of influence from the opposition.

The parents of both lovers opposed the union greatly. GREATLY. The families have been hostile with one another ever since the dawning of time, before the first organism of
n the planet respired, before the big bang which caused the creation of the Universe. The antipathy from either families for generations almost equalled the love of the young couple.

"Separate from that hoodlum," the girl's mother scoffed haughtily, her physiognomy as tight as the bun which held all of her hair back; her face even more bone like than the usual gaunt look. The girl shook her head in defiance. She turned to her father, the fat, balding man, dressed in a burly coat of fur. He merely gave her a sigh of exhaustion, and once the young lady had enough of their contumely, she trudged to her room: angry and melancholic at the same time. How could her mother not approve of her choice of male? How could her father stand idly by while her mother chastised her? It was unfair, but the young man was also suffering the same amount of complaints from his parents.

It seemed the couple really could not take a breath from all of the judgement on their relationship. Private as it was, information spilled spread quickly like wildfire.

On a night as cloudless, gloomy and eerie as the imagination can muster, the young man and woman slipped out from the confines of their chambers to meet under the shadow of the darkness. The moon was nowhere to be found. The wind was howling.

The young man and woman grabbed each others' hands, knowing and needing not light to find one another. They trudged on towards the mountainous terrain. The closer to the mountains they were, the colder the temperature became. Why the mountains you ask? Well, an old legend foretells of an old woman who lives in a wondrous cottage within the confines of the mountains. She lives in recluse, with no moral compass pointing due north nor south, she was merely living by her lonesome. It is rumored that the old woman could read the stars and tell the future. It was some ancient magic, the villagers gossiped. The old woman was knowledgable of all relationships: past, current, future. She could see it all. There was nothing that was hidden from her, she was magic. She could grant wishes.

A few hours of walking up the mountain pass and the journey seemed all the more arduous. The wind kissed the girl's cheeks red, the trek up hill tortured her muscles, the frost threatened to freeze her, not even the layers of layers of clothing which she donned on her person could stop the piercing chill of the cold.

"We'll find her, Larke," She said in a whisper, squeezing her love's hand tightly in hers. She had so much hope for the future. They would escape the oppression of their parents, the endless whispers of their village, the madness. They would escape with nothing but their love to keep them sane, together, alive. She wanted to love him in peace. She would do anything for her darling.

"Of course, Vera. Of course," Larke lied through his teeth. He had no hope for the future. They would die in this mountain. The old woman would not show up before them. The story foretold of the woman arriving when they needed her the most, and most obviously, she has not made her appearance to the couple. They were dead. They were lost. He was tired. He cannot go on.

Larke stopped in his tracks and turned to face his beautiful Vera in the darkness. He could not see her face: the glimmering blueish green eyes, the long doe like eye lashes, the pink blush upon her cheeks, her lips the color of a newly bloomed rose, he could see none of her. But he held her so closely in his arms. But he held her so tightly. "Let us rest, my love," he let out an exasperated sigh.

Vera said nothing.

"You must be cold," He wrapped his arms protectively around her, bring the two of their bodies down to the ice and snow covered ground. He could feel little warmth radiating for her body, but it was all he could do to protect his darling.

The girl followed his lead and her arms found his body. "Only for a little while," she rested her head against his chest. "I cannot believe she has not appeared at all..." Vera said hoarsely, but with little success as her voice cracked. The discrepancy made the two chuckle uncontrollably. They laughed at her odd voice, they laughed at their tiredness, they laughed at their stupidity because it was all they could do. Laugh.

The young woman rose to a dead silence. When did she even sleep? Vera could not remember anything after the burst of laughter that she and Larke both shared. Larke! Her brain lit up at the name and quickly registered the added weight on her shoulder. It was her Larke, sleeping. How cute. She must rouse him, however. They have lost precious time. "My love, we must keep moving," Vera shook the young man, but to her dismay, his body fell limp on the ice behind him. Her eyes widened. Words could not come out of her mouth. Almost immediately, she checked to see if life had left him, and it did.

"What have I done...?" She whispered to herself. In the darkness of a gloomy night, she lost the man whom she was going to love for all eternity.

Just then, a bright light appeared behind her. Vera did not want to look, but something encouraged her to. The light beckoned her to leave her Larke in the snow. "I cannot leave him," she said while standing.

"Oh dear, heart, but you must," A disembodied voice called out. Vera followed the light and entered within its confines.

Once inside, she could see the vast colors of an everlasting spring. It was beautiful! Waters of silver and gold danced from fountains which descended from heavily detailed fountains of a rare kind of metal. It glistened. Oh how it glistened! There was a tree of crimson halfway to a quaint cottage. Was this the home of the fortune teller?

The cottage door opened and the wind pushed her into the direction of the ajar door. vera simply followed not wanting to ensue the wrath of the old woman upon herself or prevent her departed lover from ever reaching nirvana. Inside the cottage, everything had its place, everything organized and wonderful. There was a table in the middle with a bowl full of apples and a glass of water. Vera assumed it was for her.

She grabbed an apple and took a hesitant bite. It was the sweetest she had ever tasted! How wonderful.

"How may I help you, dear heart?" the disembodied voice spoke asked from behind Vera. The young girl turned herself to face back and what she saw was more surprising than the former glory of the cottage. "Shed your coat and relax yourself, your lover will join you very shortly, if you chose for him to,"

Her lover? Larke? But was he not dead?

More importantly, the lady who stood before her was not old at all. She did not look past her late teens, truthfully. She had long blonde hair which cascaded down the length of her back, sparkling sapphire colored eyes, and a beautiful visage in itself. "You two have travelled quite the distance to seek my services,"

Vera could only answer with a nod. Her lips would not move due to her lack of words.

"What is it you want?"

"I want Larke to join me,"

"But you must sacrifice something precious. A life for a life, dear heart," the woman held out her hands, weighing the equality of human life in her palms. There was no one whom Vera would want to dispose of just for the sake of Larke. No one was worthy to be exchanged with Larke's lost life-- but Vera herself. It would mean she dies. Would that be fine? Of course. Gladly would she sacrifice her life in order to save her beloved's.

"Use mine," Vera's eyes met the woman's, the sparkle of a tear visible.

"A love for a love. A love to last for a thousand years, one step closer are you to be," A fortune perhaps? But Vera could not remember, the scene went black as soon as the last word escaped the woman's lips.

Larke soon regained consciousness after the loss of his darling Vera, but he remembered nothing of the sort... or anything at all. He forgot everything, but there was an aching in his chest which only stabbed him harder when he tries to remember. The young man made a new life for himself, found a woman and tried to settle down.

It didn't work. The hole in his heart only grew deeper and hurt more. It was painful to be so invested in something he knew nothing about! Worst thing is he could not stop it. Multiple times, Larke has tried to commit suicide to palliate the hurt in his chest, but to no avail. Not only did he left out of the leap unscathed, but the pain persisted.

Centuries dragged on, and while people died around him, Larke did not even age nor did he ever lose the pain. Why? He watched the history happen, experienced the shift of periods, the changes in eras. He was immortal.

It was not until he was close to the brink of insanity did he find a cure for the pain. A young woman named Vera, who had long raven black locks, blueish green eyes, and a beautiful visage even in the dark, assuaged his aching. She was perfection, everything about her was perfect. She suffered depression, diagnosed because of her inability to cope with anything she lost .Amazingly, she felt the same way. Her loneliness and his pain subsided.

"I have died everyday waiting for you..." He told her one day. A kiss from Vera broke the cloudiness in his mind, he could see everything so vividly, as if they happened just moments ago before him. The girl before him was his Vera. She is an exact replica, or even the real thing. "I have loved you for a thousand years, and I'll love you for a thousand more,"

"One step closer," Vera answered with a twinkle in her eye.
