The Doctor stopped and raised a skeptical eyebrow, giving Sherlock a lop-sided grin.
"Did you just try to sonic a sonic without a second sonic?" he asked, smiling a little. He slipped a hand inside his pocket and pulled out a key, which he turned in the TARDIS's little silver lock. This was more out of habit, than anything else - that, and he wanted to see the inside just to assure himself that the off-blue colour of the exterior was just a trick of the light. He pushed the doors open, revealing the interior, which really was much bigger.
"You're excitable today," he remarked, both to Sherlock and to his ship.

(I'm including links to things I'm not sure you know of, since apparently you're not into the Doctor Who fandom. Sorry if it bothers you...)

(Bother me? Why would your kind and thoughtful act bother me?)

"Yes, well, I mean, how could it not know about itself? Isn't needing a second sonic to describe the first rather redun-", he trailed off mid word, jaw dropping as he quickly locked the flat door and poked his head inside, wide eyes scanning. "I'm excitable any day. It's just there's not usually much to excite me", he quipped, though the breathlessness in his voice kind of took away its sarcastic bite and made it sound really genuine.

(And now of course, suddenly Sherlock likes him. Go figure. We both knew that would happen. ;P )

The Doctor laughed a little, glad to see Sherlock's more curious side. He'd missed it, certainly.
"It's my sonic; why would I ask it to tell me about my sonic?" One eyebrow raised, he offered the famous detective a quirky smile, walking into the TARDIS so that he could stroke her controls more fully, listening to the slight electric hum that ran through his fingertips.
"Ah... well, she is exciting." He laughs, switching a few buttons to leave the TARDIS hovering a few centimetres from the floor, "and she travels anywhere in time and space. I could pop back and see Liz the First - she's still waiting to elope. Still, her nickname is definitely no longer 'the vir'-- ooh!" he interrupted himself, as the TARDIS tilted to the side a little. He'd been leaning on a lever absentmindedly.

(Well, you might have been offended.
As a fun fact, that line about the queen's nickname is actually in the show. Dirty Doctor. )

"Well, I don't know. But it's unfortunate for me." Sherlock slipped inside behind the Doctor and had begun stroking various parts of the remarkable machine with his free hand, absorbed in his own fascination.

"Anywhere in time and space. I wish John were here for this. He would probably love it. Ask you all sorts of silly questions I'm sure you've heard a million times before." If this was a dream, it was finally turning into an enjoyable one at least.

Holmes turned his attention back to the sonic, smirking thoughtfully. He wondered what his limits were with this thing. "Turn on everyone's personal computers on this Earth and bring up an internet picture of a random mythological figure, then eject their disk drives if they have them. Change all of the LED adverts in London to a picture of a field of flowers. Text all of Scotland Yard an anonymous message saying 'A man was born in 1955. He's alive and well today at age 33. How is this possible?' Got to keep them sharp. And clear my e-mail of junk mail. On my computer, find me some interesting unsolved cases on the internet. Also, put malware on Donovan's computer. Locate the nearest second sonic screwdriver. Scan the Doctor." He'd spoken rather quickly, gauging the Doctor for his reaction.

(Oh, no, not at all. smile Also, fun facts.)

The Doctor snatched the screwdriver from Sherlock's hand, running a hand up it to extend it an extra couple of centimetres.
"You'd need to extend it. And it'd only be... ehh, five to ten metre radius?" He leant his head to the side to show that he was guessing and slipped the device back into his purple coat pocket, which still didn't seem big enough to fit everything he put into it.
"John loved this, first time 'round. Don't know now, though... Might even be as different as you." The Doctor shrugged noncommittally, talking about the first Big Bang before he'd messed up the great detective's timestream.

"What's so great about a device that can't interfere with everything?" Sherlock was only speaking in mild annoyance, but mostly because he hadn't realised the thing could be extended before it was taken away from him.

"Well, oh. Oh. Hm. John would still love this. Every second of it. He's a romantic fool, always begging for an adventure. Right, and about this first me. How am I different now?"

The Doctor sighed, throwing his coat up to hang on one of the many odd posts that seemed to act as support mechanisms, and began to twist buttons and pull levers. A weird whirring noise filled the TARDIS as its doors swung shut, and the Doctor spoke as it did this, as though this was perfectly normal.
"The old you lived in a different time stream. A while into the future I'm forced to fly the Pandorica - something designed to imprison me for eternity, designed through an alliance of the Daleks, the Cybermen, and any other race I've ever been forced to hurt - into the heart of an exploding TARDIS. This TARDIS, in fact. I caused the second Big Bang, setting everything right again, except... a couple of people fell into the wrong places. Ah, well - can't be helped."
He pushed the doors open, revealing that they were no longer in Sherlock's living room, but instead in a street in the mid-1800s.
"This is where you used to be. Right up there, in 221B." He indicated a small window on the edge of the building to their right, its glass broken to show the entirely black, musty, unhappy inside of the room.

Sherlock felt his mouth dry up. "This- it's", he looked around, "it's the Victorian Era, a great time for crime-- but not for crime fighters. The police were laughably inefficient in these days." Secretly he was much more astonished than he was letting on, but he needed to keep his cool, especially while apparently travelling in time.

Secretly he was much more astonished than he was letting on, but he needed to keep his cool, especially while apparently travelling in time.

The Doctor hit his forehead with both hands, as though he'd just realised something that was impossibly obvious.
"Oh! Ohhhh!" His shock turned to a grin.
"It's your first time. Well," he corrected himself, "this you's first time. Sorry!" The Doctor lent against the doorframe of the TARDIS, looking out at the street nearby. Baker street, in the 19th century. He could take Sherlock home, but there didn't seem to be any particular hurry.

Sherlock stepped outside and ran up to the door, 221B, touched it. It had an uncanny feel. He checked the knob. Unlocked, often times just like his 221B. He opened the door and counted seventeen steps up into the darkness of the upstairs.

It looked a lot like the 221B Baker Street he'd come to cherish, and yet it wasn't. His head spun and he calmed his breaths, leaning against the doorway, white as a sheet. This was all too real, and yet so preposterous. His logical brain was waging an all out civil war.

The Doctor watched, unable to see a reason to object; even if Sherlock Holmes did not currently occupy 221B, he doubted anyone else did. After all, it was a place reserved for the famous detective, and he had no doubt that anybody that did try to move in would get a "sixth sense" that they did not belong.
"Ooh," he said to himself, as a young girl literally sprinted past him, covered in either red paint or a very disturbing other something with a similar crimson sheen. "That's interesting."

Sherlock's attention was also drawn to this young girl covered in red, and only his eyes followed her as he let himself finish calming down. She was too far away to tell whether it was paint or blood, and even then, in this barbaric age it could have been the blood of any animal. She did however, seem troubled, not that it was any of his business. A thought occurred.

He walked back to the Doctor. "You're an experienced traveller of time. Tell me, if I'm in the past, could I alter the future? Also, is there anything else I should know? Remember to treat me as if I know absolutely nothing about time and space travel."

"Ah... Well." The Doctor hesitated. That was a very complicated question, and one that a human wouldn't be able to comprehend the answer to. "You're assuming that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective point of view, it's more of a.... big ball of... wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff. You can change some things, but certain events are something called fixed points. You can't change those, and if you try, you'll tear about the fabric of space and time itself." Of course, since his race's destruction, he was the only man in the universe that could tell whether or not something was a 'fixed point'.
"I can tell when something's a fixed point, something I can't change." He nodded in the general direction of the running girl, as though this had some relevance to anything, "she's the girl behind Jack the Ripper. I've seen her before. And I can't do anything to change it." His voice was pained, almost guilty. More than once he'd gone to the area of a disaster, one of those rare disasters that wasn't a fixed point, and tried to save them - but he'd only ended up making it happen in the process.

"Jack the Ripper?" Sherlock raised his brows curiously, showing no particular sign of sympathy as though he were watching a documentary. "I could never figure that one out." He looked back at his new acquaintance. "I'm not 'assuming' anything by the way. That's why I asked. Time is not my area and to assume any knowledge could be rather disastrous."

He touched his finger on his chin thoughtfully. "Is that what happened to the rest of the travellers? One of those 'fixed points'? And if you're so sad about them being gone, can't you just go back to the time when they existed to see them again? And that's another thing, how do time and universe travellers all get themselves killed permanently when they've reflected like a mirror in the time continuum so many times? Wouldn't they still exist in the times and places they've been to? Can't you in theory run into yourself? Can't I now in theory run into myself?? Or somehow see evidence of my being here? Doesn't this mean death is merely an illusion?" He just couldn't help himself; his inquiring mind overwhelmed his sensibility.

Sherlock Holmes BBC

The Doctor paused, thinking a few moments before he answered.
"The Last Great Time War, on Gallifrey..." he started, referring to his home planet, "it was the Daleks versus the Timelords. Each side had to battle with everything or lose the war. Two mighty races, each with the power to tear space and time apart. The Timelords were becoming... something else, losing their morality, fracturing the space-time continuum for the sake of winning a war. I... had to end it." This wasn't something that he should be talking about, he realised, as a part of him welled with sadness.
"My wife, my daughters, my people... my planet burned. There were no survivors. And I watched it happen. Time can be rewritten but once you see it happen, it's set in stone. I put a time lock on that place, and now I can never travel there. If I could go back and save them, I would - if I could change just one fixed point in time, it would be them. But the Universe isn't worth that." He laughed, a little darkly. He remembered the last phone call he'd gotten from his wife as she was burning, the last words she'd ever spoken to him: you monster. It seemed befitting, of a lonely man wandering the Universe. He shrugged a little, trying to shake the sadness away from his hunched shoulders and hooded eyes, and forced a smile.
"I can't cross my own timestream, and nor can you.The Timelords are finished, dead, and buried; I will never see them again. One of those timey-wimey, not-quite-logical rules."

((Ugh.. Sorry for the long posts. I just kind of needed that space to explain/answer everything... Sorry. ))
