The girl behind the counter eyed the guy with the cane and jumpsuit and burn scars as he approached. "Got a problem with yer order?" she drawled, her tone saying crystal clear that she gave no ******** whatsoever.

"Ah-" He squeaked, but quickly regained his composure, "Do you know what band has been playing?" He wiggled a finger up towards the ceiling speakers with a nervous smile. "I hadn't heard them before, they're great!"

Her expression thawed slightly. "That's Winter Blue. Local artist," she said. "My kid sister's band. We got some CDs on the end of the counter." She nodded towards a small display box.

He brightened up immediately, "Oh, definitely put me down for... for three!" Stocking stuffers: GET. "Tell them they've made a new fan!" He beamed. "Do you play any?"

Jerry got a slightly suspicious look for his enthusiasm, but the barista reached over to grab three CDs out of the display box. "Nah, she's the talented one in the family," she said. "She'll be happy to hear she's got a fan, anyhow."

"Oh? I'm surprised! You have very long fingers," He blurted out. He cleared his throat, fishing for his wallet, "And um. D-do you know of any good music shops around? Especially if they ah... have a book shop nearby?"

"Not from around here, huh," the barista said, almost kindly. She rang up the CDs and slipped them into a small bag. "Your accent is a dead giveaway." She jerked a thumb in the direction of the street. "Take a left, two corners down, then left again. There's a record shop halfway down the street, bookstore on the next block."

"Ahaha, the Philly boy in me is showing huh? Go Eagles!" He had to assume even after years of not paying attention to Sports, his home team was still just as shamefully inadequate. "Perfect!" He scrambled to write the directions down on a spare napkin with the pen after signing the receipt, "But I mean like... to buy instruments. A Guitar City would do it, ahaha. Good shopping in that area?"
This was going great. He knew anyone scowling that much was just having a bad day and couldn't be all that bad. "And ah... if... if your sister's band is ever having a.. a concert or anything... maybe you'd like to um. Go?" Of course he couldn't attend but... there was no harm in asking, right? He smiled hopefully. "I'll loose the crutch by then, don't worry, ahaha."

"It's attached to a music store," the girl said. "Little pricey, but they got good stuff." At the question, she gave him a flat stare. Then she reached over to take the pen and scribbled a number on the napkin: 212-660-2245. "Enjoy your stay, Philly boy," she said.

He stared down at the number in disbelief, and quickly wiped it off his face at Roar's urgent prompting.
He cleared his throat, offering a hand out, "I'm Jerry, by the way."
His heart was in his throat.
"I um... don't have a cellphone," He lied, "But... but I'll give you a call for sure!"

"Agnes," the girl said, and shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, Jerry. Scuse me, I gotta go wash some cups, k?" She slouched back towards the dishwashing area.

"B-bye..." He mumbled, watching her go before half tripping, half floating back to the table with Jordan before proudly slapping the napkin down in front of him victoriously.

"Book shop and music shop within walking distance of each other! AND a phone number!" He at least had perked up considerably, taking a last victorious sip of his coffee. "So! Shall we? Lots to do, and only limited leave time." He picked up the napkin again, smiling softly at it.
He managed to get a girl's phone number. Not even here an hour and things were looking brighter.
I TOLD you you were just gettin' cabin' fever. A good day out here you'll be your annoyin' old self again. Roar laughed in the back of his head, relieved if nothing else.

"Time to get some stuff done, huh?" Jordan finished his coffee and got up, grinning. He clapped a hand on Jerry's shoulder. "Good to see you looking cheerful. Warm enough now?"
