"You don't need to get up on my behalf." Punk sighed. "I can't say I'm surprised. She's still learning to interact with others. The only one she's been around is me. I'm just glad she didn't run off on you." Glancing at Sumac, he continued, "Cardinal was the one who injured you, wasn't he?"

Well he was up anyway so he might as well stand. “Well that explains a lot. She didn’t seem to have much to say. I don’t think she spoke the whole time you were gone.” He never actually considered the filly would run off. He didn’t know what he would have done if she had done that to him. Chase her down was the most obvious answer. He starred at Punk with a straight and composed face which was as much of an answer as a verbal one to him.

"... If she did talk to you, I'd be extremely surprised. I've never heard her voice." Punk sighed again at the other stallion's stare. "Well, at least he didn't see her with me. That... would've ended very badly." He grinned. "She managed to fall asleep, though. I'm glad she didn't force herself to stay awake and wait for me."

The girl was mute??! Sumac only blinked in response to that. He nodded to Punk’s other comment. “Yes. That would have been unpleasant to deal with.” He leaned down to peek in on Ca and smiled when he saw her asleep. Straightening back up he faced Punk again. “Very well. This is where I’ll leave you then. Take care and be cautious Punk.”

"It would've been much more than unpleasant." Punk chuckled. "I will. But you know, she's going to get mad if you leave without saying goodbye first."

“It might make her mad but I’ll be gone and only you’ll be here to bite.” Sumac laughed and gestured to her. “You might want to be the one to wake her. I think she has had more than enough baths from one day due to my touch.”

Punk couldn't help laughing as well. "That's true, but I'd hate to see her sulk."
Ca stirred at the laughter, ears flicking up. She'd fallen asleep? Sumac had been humming, and then...
"Fair enough. Though by the sound of it, she's waking up on her own."
Her father was back. Ca squirmed out of the hideout and all but tackled the bird Azrien. She growled at him, but still nuzzled into his side.
"Hey, hey, I wasn't gone that long. No need to get panicky," he reassured her with a gentle smile. "It wasn't that bad, was it? I'm sure Sumac took good care of you."
Ca's gaze went up to her father before going over to the other winged stallion. A small smile played across her face as she nodded.

Sumac waited patiently for Ca’s little reunion with her father to be over before he was going to interrupt but Punk brought the conversation back to him without the need. “I wouldn’t say good care, but she survived the whole thing. Next time I’d suggest having her watched by someone who knows something about foals. I barely remember being one anymore.” He shook his head and nodded at her. “Well Ca this is where I say goodbye. It was nice meeting you and who knows I might see you again in the futre. Take care of your dad and listen when he tries to teach you things. It may be silly but you need to learn it.” He walked by and patted the filly on her head with his wing before starting out away from the pair.

Punk smiled. "I'll remember that for next time."
Ca's ears flicked back against her head when Sumac said goodbye. She whined, nipping lightly at his feathers. She didn't want him to leave...
"Easy there, Ca. He's got to go home and rest." Turning his attention to Sumac, he added, "Take care of yourself."

He smiled at Punk. “I’ll be fine. One can only stand in the shadows so long before heading out into the light. Eventually.” He knew the little filly wouldn’t understand what he just said and was glad for it. By the time Punk understood it would be too late. His tenure with Cardinal was almost done. This was the last year. Soon enough Sumac would be leaving. Possibly forever from this herd, but for now he would stay nice and quit. Cardinal wouldn’t find him when Sumac chose to leave and he would take nothing with him. After all there was nothing here for him. He kept walking away from the pair.

Punk just grinned. "Maybe we'll catch up to that one some day. Most traveling birds don't stay in the south the whole summer."
Ca's ears shot straight up at her father's second comment. The only time he ever mentioned the term 'staying south' was when he was talking about... She looked up at him hopefully.
Punk chuckled at his daughter's bright expression. "We'll be seeing her soon too." He nuzzled her lightly. "Ready to go?"
The filly shook her head, hurrying back into the little hideout to retrieve her cattail. Only then did she allow her father to start leading her home.
