When Isenath saw Quinta checking her for injuries, she realized she wasn't quite sure of her status herself. She had been so busy running that she hadn't had time to think about whether she had bites taken out of her back. Fortunately, she didn't seem hurt. She was sore in places but those were probably from where she bumped into branches during her hasty retreat.
"I'm fine," she told Quinta. Poor Quinta's spines were all still raised, going every direction now. It would have been a comical look if only they hadn't just almost been attacked. Isenath took a breath to calm the adrenaline rushing through her system. They were out of harm's way now. They were back in the embrace of the ocean. A shark or an orca could kill them here... but never another soquili. Here, they ruled.

After several minutes of silence and standing in the waves, Quinta was ready. "Let's go back into the ocean, Issy." Even here she still felt exposed. She longed for the depths. In many ways it was more dangerous there, but it was a familiar sort of danger. Quinta didn't know what to expect from the shore and was tired of wondering. Her curiosity had had enough for one day.
This time, she led the way. She only took a few more steps before she sank into the water and started letting her tail do the work. It was hard to swim at first, but a few beats of her tail brought her into deeper waters. Now she had room to move. She stayed at a slow and steady pace this time. She wouldn't go dashing off again even if the most delicious fish in the world passed by. They had had enough excitement for one day.

The last few steps through the water were like dragging her body through mud. Isenath still marveled from time to time what a difference swimming could make. Walking through the water, she was an alien and a stranger. When she swam, she was one with the waves.
The blue fins on top of her body broke through the waves as she began to swim. A passing human could have easily mistaken her for a sea monster, and in many senses they would be right. No human was nearby, but it wouldn't have mattered either way for Isenath. She was back home now, together with her mate. Part of her almost wished the kalona had followed them into the surf. She would have loved to pull that one underneath the waves... but there would be others for that. With a wicked smile seen by no one, Isenath left the world of dry land behind.
