Mouth of the Beast Word Count: 1,001+
Asedri was staring down at Fizzgig tentatively, for its part the creature stared back at her, oblivious for the moment as to what she was contemplating. "Are you even sure this is safe?" She chewed her lip apprehensively. The thought of sticking her hand anywhere this critter's many rows of teeth had her understandably nervous.
Absolutely!
"And how am I supposed to explain this to Kios, when I'm suddenly missing a hand?" Or worse, an arm even! Given how far Fizzgig could unhinge its jaws that seemed a rather tame estimate of what it could eat at one time. (Truthfully, she only stopped there because the thought of anymore more mildly horrifying.)
You won't even loose a finger, I promise.
"Uh huh." Keme seemed quite serious, despite the mouse's skepticism. Hopefully it was not just because she would not have to be the one shoving her hand into some crazy creature's mouth! She sighed and chewed her lip some more. The more she considered the situation it was a silly notion really, this would be her body too after they merged...and missing a hand would be terribly inconvenient.
Mhm. Besides, he won't even know what you are doing...you have to disable him first.
"How do I do 'disable him' exactly?" She reached out to pet fizzgig when it yipped and jumped up onto the bed beside her. So trusting, poor little thing does not even know what we are up to. It was more than happy to roll over and have its belly rubbed too. Fizzgig really was a sweet little thing, once you could get over the shark like teeth.
No, he doesn't. But he is very good at keeping secrets. He guarded many things, the tome was but one of them. Though for the life of her she could not say what those things were for certain. Ah well, they would be revealed when they became important again if such a time ever came. Flip him back over, get him to open his mouth, then tap him on the nose and say 'Gigzzif''.
It seemed simple enough in theory, though it seemed Fizzgig would rather play than cooperate. It yipped and danced away from her hands when she reached out to try and keep him still. He was crouched down, wagging its small fluffy tail like a little puppy would. "Fizzgig." It whined pathetically at her sour tone and expression, when it seemed that now was in fact not playtime and she almost felt bad. Asedri would not have minded obliging her furry guardian if there was not something that needed to be done.
She pet Fizzgig's head to reassure it some and get it to settle down, gradually her fingers drifted down to its muzzle and it yipped again, pleased by the attention. Aha!
"Gigzzif." The creature seemed to freeze entirely, not even blinking. "Creeeeepy." Now she just had to carefully pry open its jaws to big enough space to slide her arm through without catching it on the teeth. It was a little easier said than done, thank to its teeth being razor sharp but after a few moment she would manage it. "Now what?"
Unfortunately, exactly what you think.
"Ewwwwwwwwww....can you not do it?" The idea of fishing around in fizzgig's, or really anything's, innards was more than a bit gross.
Our hands are not as steady when I use them. For her to try would risk unnecessary injury to them both..
The mouse cringed and whined a little. It was probably true, Keme had not really made use of their body on her own before, except for that one time with the note to Akakios with his clue. "Here goes nothing, I guess." She pushed up her sleeve and stuck her hand into Fizzgig's mouth, extra careful to avoid the multiple rows of teeth. So what am I looking, er, feeling for exactly?
Kind of like a pocket...though you will have to reach back into its throat some to find it.
Fabulous. This really was disgusting, and Fizzgig had horrible breath as creatures of this sort tended to. Obviously it had been eating things it shouldn't have, her only hope was it was nothing that would be missed because there was no seeing it again, this thing had a stomach of iron and could digest most everything. She reached back a little further and tried not to gag. After a bit of blind searching (because like hell was she going to stick her head in Fizzgig's mouth) Asedri was able to find what Keme had described to her. She pulled back the skin and felt around some more behind it. This space did not feel anything like the rest had, it was more leathery, probably to protect whatever items were in here.
"Is there only one book?" She really really hoped so because this was just getting to be way too much.
I think so, but concentrate on what you are looking for...it should just come to your hand.
Rune strokes time. Rune strokes tome. Rune strokes tome. Nothing came to her hand at first and she frowned. Oh come on! Eventually something small landed in her hand. Hopefully that was what they were looking for because she did not want to have to go in there again anytime soon- though never again would suit her just fine! She drew her hand out carefully, allowing the pocket to close and once her hand was out of fizzgig's mouth completely she pushed it shut as well. "So, how do I fix him?"
Tap him on the nose again and say 'Fizzgig'.
"Fizzgig." Once she tapped it on the nose again the creature seemed to come back to life and behaved as if nothing at all had happened.
See. I told you.
After her furry guardian was settled next to her Asedri look a look at the object she had retrieved from it's 'pocket'. It was indeed a book, but a very tiny book.
Run your finger along the spine, that should fix the tiny problem.
Asedri did as she was told and the book suddenly grew to a full size tome. The cover seemed to be in perfect shape, despite how long it had been dwelling in Fizzgig's innards. She flipped the cover open and took a look at the first page. "Dictionary of Rune Strokes".
Well, there you have it.

AmplificationWord Count: 1,001+Are you even sure this is safe?Absolutely.But...you said I have to help you do this?It is too fine a work for me to do on my own. Do not worry, I will help you.She was staring at the pale green ink that they had been working on in the bowl in front of them. "I'm not sure I can do this." It seemed to glow lightly of its own accord. No doubt because of something they had put in it, but Asedri was not familiar with most of the plants they had used to achieve this particular color. Keme had said some of them originated in the fae realm, perhaps that had something to do with it? Of course you can. I will do most of it, you just have to keep our hands steady. It seemed she would have to do a little more placating and in this instance she did not feel bad being a little underhanded in her methods. You want to be able to help Maddie and Kayan, do you not? The Mouse was beginning to see Maddie as her son, even if she did not quite understand the feeling yet.Of course I do! Outwardly she pouted. Thankfully since they were in their room there would be no one else around to notice or say anything, except Keme who chuckled a bit. She bit her lip instead and glanced down at the pattern that was drawn on the paper. What is this supposed to do anyway? She traced the spiraling lines with a fingertip, following the spiral outward and over the crossing lines until it dipped inward again, which lead to the spiral collapsing on itself. Amplification. That means...making something stronger, right? She had seen that word in the tomes they had been reading and that was the only meaning that made sense, given the context. Exactly. It took her a moment to answer - she had been couple checking the pattern as her host traced it. The number of spirals had to be exact or it could cause unexpected results. Anywhere from not working at all to problems like Maddie and Kayan had. It is to make up for what I cannot give you, though I wish I could. Power was beyond her reach for now. Which under normal circumstances would not have been so bad, but wanting - needing - to help with something and not being able to? That was just frustrating. I can guide you during the ritual and we can go over the passages again once this is done if you like?Yes. Everyone had to play their part correctly for Kios to be able to do what had to be done. Hers would take a bit more work thanks to her impure blood. Did you get the needles out before, when you got the bowl?"Uh..." She pushed around some of the multitude of papers on the table, looking for the leather case they were stored in. The man in the market had given it to them, once he realized who she was or more appropriately who she would become. He was familiar with the concept of gods and knew Tajnevaki, since the other Mystery came hunting at his shop for oddities from time to time. "No..I guess not." Well, we obviously need them. They should be next to where you got the bowl, I think? She got up from the bench and headed to the low cupboard. "I think you are right." It had seemed the smart thing to do to keep all the implements and pigments for rune markings together, along with the tomes, if only so the cabinet could be securely locked. It was something they had agreed on after finding out about what Zrath had done with Keme's work. She opened the doors and knelt down. Some of the tomes on the bottom shelf were still missing, Kios had wanted to read through them again to make sure he had not missed anything. Pigments and bonding agents were stored in little labeled containers on the top shelf all in a neat line. The middle shelf was for ink bowls, a mortar and pestal, small knives and - aha! - the needles. There we go.Hn. We might need to borrow back a couple of the books Kios has once he is done with them. She reached for the leather pouch, got up and closed the cupboard doors. It would be locked up again once her rune was done and everything was cleaned up and put back in its place. Probably. But it is a worry for afterwards. She would also have to find a way to hide the rune from their mutual lover because it was something Lament would not approve of.Asedri set the case down and resettled herself on the bench and smoothed out her skirt so she was more comfortable, which may or may not have been a bit of a delay tactic. She was rather nervous about poking herself with needles. "Which ones do we need to use for this?" Second and the third for some small parts probably. It wasn't like this was meant to be some massive thing, just a dainty little pattern on the underside of her wrist."Which-" Left hand. She knew the question was coming."Okay." The Mouse plucked the needles from the case and rolled them between her fingers. She tried to remind herself that they weren't dangerous like this, except for the single sharp end that would be dipped in the ink. She had seen Zrath do this to dozens of people and had not been scared then. This was a good thing, unlike those, so there was no reason to be scared - at least logically anyway. It will be fine. I swear it. I will not let you hurt yourself. She could do that much at least. Now take the thinner of two needles and dip the sharp end in the ink. Just a little bit mind. Too little was better than too much in this case, less something smear and ruin the pattern. She picked up the needle and dipped the end in the green ink. "Like that?" Now set it down a moment, push up your sleeve and lets get this taken care of.
