I always swab out my flute before putting in the case. Otherwise, when I'm too lazy to put it away, I just stand it up on it's end and lean it against something to dry. No buildup or ewwness that way. Occassionally I'll wipe it off, but not all the time, because everytime I play it's gets absolutely COVERED in finger prints.
But one thing that really gets on my nerves is, I guess I always have chapped lips or something 'cause there's always this stuff left on my lip plate and I have to use my nail to get it off O.o. It's like EWW.
And my band seems to be just the opposite, people usually clean the inside out before putting it away, but they never wipe the outside, not even at the end of band class. XD;;

._. I constantly clean it now. Like. Every day.
...And then when I clean the head joint my lower lip gets some of that silver-black stuff on it and I look stupid. biggrin And then my mommy makes fun of me. So now I've remembered to wipe it off with my finger first.

I've been playing for years, and I still clean my flute everytime I play it. It hurts to put it away without cleaning it. And I only put it away without cleaning it if I'm short on time. I love my flute! ^__^
besides, if I don't clean it everytime I play it gets really gross. I don't want Charlie or Boomy to get moldy!! That'd be nasty. >.<
(Charlie and Boomy are my flutes)

I NEVER clean my flute. And it's a real nice flute sweatdrop
Instead of cleaning it, I just have to get it overhauled like, two-three times a year. Heh. Yeah.

Novel of Tragedy I NEVER clean my flute. And it's a real nice flute sweatdrop Instead of cleaning it, I just have to get it overhauled like, two-three times a year. Heh. Yeah. Waste of money for not even a minute, or a minute or two of cleaning after everytime you play. Plus it will help the pads and the flute last much longer and you won't have to get it overhauled so often.

Plus it will help the pads and the flute last much longer and you won't have to get it overhauled so often. I know. Don't talk to me like i'm a beginner. And plus I just get new pads. And I go to the best repairman in my state and he rarely charges me because i'm one of those top three flute players in my state that everyone just knows. He always puts all his other work aside when I come in (because i'm always in some dire crisis, like when my flute broke the day before all state).

Hula_dancing_monkeyo.O You must understand, that most flutists (like me xd ) Have a love for shiny things. So that is why we clean our flutes all of the time 3nodding Yep. I will admit, I have a thing for shiny things. Now I'm not that obsessed with cleanin' my flute, but I do clean it fairly often. Pretty much every weekend, I'll clean it really well. Before concerts and big performances, I always clean it. But my mouthpiece, I clean all the time. It just feels like my flute doesn't sound right if I don't have a clean mouthpiece. And then there's the keys. I clean the keys a lot too.

umm i dont clean it while we are resting i clean it after band is over because i might as well wait for another hour because its better then cleaning it in the middle of band then having to clean it AGAIN at the end i pretty much just clean it after im done playing it and its not like i sit there and polish it and stuff i just do the basics...mum gets mad at me sometimes because i "dont take care of my flute" but really i take fine care of it...

I'm not one of those obsessed people i do like a clean flute though. The 4th chair last year would lick his flute whenever we weren't playing it was so nasty

My entire section, except for me and someone else don't clean their flutes. It's really disgusting because they keep wondering why their flutes are breaking down and sounding like crap, it's like...
"Hello you bimbo headed idiots, clean your goddamned flute or get demoted to woodwind class already you know'nothing hollister clones..." I have to put up with this everyday...ahh, the joys of being a section leader. stare

I clean my pic all the time because the condensation gets on the pads which causes some of the notes to not come out. It always happens during concerts and at our last concert I was cleaning it during a march where the flutes were playing and I accidently put the gummy end of the cigarette paper on the pad and it got stuck! Luckily I got it fixed up before I had to come back in but it was REALLY close to not making it. If it was easy to re-tune my pic I would just swab it out but it's obviously very hard, lol. I'm really good at tuning it normally, though smile
