Our love would be forever: Worried | And if we die: Another attack on a family... | We die together: Bernadette | And lie, I would never: Aldred Home |

Dustin Aldred stared at his copy of The Daily Prophet, brown eyes worried. Another family murdered... This was becoming far too common for his liking. It shouldn't be that easy to overpower and kill a family of witches and wizards. He set it down, turning it over so he wouldn't have to look at the headline anymore. There were more pleasant things to think about today. Marina was going back to Hogwarts, which meant she was happy, which meant he was happy, even if he was going to miss his only child once more. A warm, pale hand grasped his and squeezed it comfortingly. Dustin smiled at his wife, who was sitting across the kitchen table from him. "I think we should put some protective wards and spells up," he stated quietly. "Better to be safe than sorry." Bernadette nodded. "I'll help you put some up later, when we get back from King's Cross."

The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each others' lives.

Can't you hear my call: Somber | Are you coming to get me now: So much for peace... | I've been waiting for you to come rescue me: Dustin | I need you to hold all the sadness I can not, living inside of me: Aldred Home|

Bernadette sighed a little. She'd thought for sure that after the war things like what had happened to her, what had happened to that poor family would no longer exist. That the next generation would grow up in a time of peace and unity. This wasn't quite peace; she had a nagging feeling that something might be brewing in the shadows. But it wasn't war either, and for that she was grateful. Now, where was that daughter of her's? "Marina!" she called, getting up and heading towards the stairwell. "Are you almost done getting ready? We don't want to have to rush!" At this time last year she'd been in a deep depression, mourning the loss of her father. She'd finally begun to move on, but his death anniversary had just passed, leaving her in a serious mood for the last week or so. Her family knew, and let her be to deal with her heavy heart. "Coming, Mum!" came the distant reply from the second floor. "I'm looking for Jet!"

Do you CARE about ME?
Do you THINK I don't BLEED?
Why are you trying to HIDE behind a stupid LIE
When the TRUTH is your EYES
Have you LOST YOURSELF?
Always TRYING to SELL
The PERSON that you THINK you are
You stay ALONE 'cause real's just too HARD

"Jet! Where are you?!" Marina was looking for her cat, who was very fond of hiding, especially at inconvenient times. like today, when she was supposed to be leaving for Hogwarts. The redheaded girl poked her head under her bed, and then swiftly pulled it back, coughing from lurking dust bunnies. She huffed in annoyance and stood up, looking around once more. "You have five seconds to come out, or I'm just going to leave without you, mister. One... Two... Three... I'm serious! Four... Five! Now, Jet!" The grey cat finally showed his furry face, leaping down from the top of her bookshelf to her shoulders, tail curling around her neck. Marina narrowed her eyes and pried the feline off her, putting him in his cage. She then proceeded to drag her stuff down the stairs and into the living room, wishing she could just levitate it. Alas, that would be breaking a law. She still had three years to go before she was of age. She walked into the kitchen, yawning. "I cannot wait to leave. No offense or anything," she added quickly. Her mother shook her head and her father rolled his eyes. "Gee, thanks, daughter." he said dryly. Marina ignored him, eating her cereal. Within minutes she was done and leaped up. "Alright, well, let's be off then." Her parents followed her out, and soon the Aldred home was empty.

You've got your HEART in too many PLACES

Always LAYING the BLAME
You're never ONE and the SAME
Could it be that you're AFRAID to look INSIDE

How you EVER gonna keep it STRAIGHT?
Do you WANNA be a MEMORY?

It's just another war: Nervous | Just another family torn: They shouldn't be too mad... | Just a step from the edge: Parents | Just another day in the world we live in: Home |
Wearing

Marina waited a few days into summer to actually tell her parents she had a boyfriend. She would have straight up told them as soon as they arrived home, but she was nervous. Yes, she was nervous. The redhead didn't get nervous often, but when she did it got worse and worse, swirling in the pit of her stomach and rendering her unable to focus on anything. In her parents' eyes, she was still their little girl, their precious only child, and always would be, no matter how old she got. Even now, when she was five foot five and a half, wore makeup and dressed like a regular teenage girl, and had even ditched her haircut, which she had had since she was thirteen, in favor of pushing her bangs to the side and cutting a few inches off her hair, which had been nearly waist length by the end of her first year. Marina was certain that to them, she was still a small freckled girl with wild fiery curls with an equally hot temper and a love of books. Okay, maybe she hadn't changed all that much. Except now she was very close to being an adult. In two short years she would be graduated from Hogwarts, after all. And they couldn't be that mad that she was dating someone, right? She was fifteen! Plenty of girls her age had had boyfriends for a lot longer than her! And Damien was perfect. Well, not perfect, but pretty damn close. He was sweet, he was funny, he was willing to endure her moodiness and tendency to want to bicker, he had saved her life, he was a gentleman... What more could they want for her? Damien's parents might not approve of their relationship, but the Slytherin girl was determined that hers would. They were going to at least tolerate her boyfriend.

She walked into the living room, where her parents were currently at. They were playing chess, and as usual her mother was winning. Dustin was scowling at his wife, though his eyes were glinting with poorly disguised amusement. "Checkmate!" Bernadette exclaimed, and poked her husband in the shoulder playfully. "You need to work on your strategy," she teased. He shook his head. "One day I'll beat you, just you wait." She chuckled. "But that day's not today!"

Both turned their heads at Marina's entrance. She cleared her throat a little, fighting to make herself look both of them in the eye. "I have something to tell you." Dustin and Bernadette exchanged a look, then turned to give her their full attention. She balled her hands into fists for a moment, sighed a little and released her clenched fists. "I have a boyfriend." There was a moment of silence, then Dustin groaned and Bernadette broke into a small smile. "I told you it was a boy! I called it, Dust!" Marina watched in confusion. "Wait- What? You- you knew?" Her mother gave her an amused look. "I'm a mum. We get hunches about these sort of things. It always seemed like you were leaving something out in your letters on purpose. Your father didn't want to believe me, of course. So who is it?"

Marina spoke quickly so she wouldn't have time to hesitate. "Damien Edgeworth."

Bernadette looked thoughtful. "That's the boy from first year, right? The one from the old pureblood family, who saved you in the gardens?" Dustin looked a little horrified. "You're dating an Edgeworth?! You, you're dating a pureblood Slytherin boy?"

"He's not like his family!" Marina snapped. "He doesn't care about blood or money or any of that crap!" Her father looked skeptical. "This is the one who you described as 'the most infuriating, snobbish, uptight little p***k I've ever met' to us?"

"That was before!" she insisted. She stuck her hand in his face, displaying the ring Damien had given her on it. Dustin went pale. "Is that what I think it is?" Marina and Bernadette rolled their eyes at the same time and gave a simultaneous sigh. "For the love of- Dad, it's his family ring! He gave it to me! Stop acting like it's cursed!"

The blonde man put his hands up defensively. "Alright, alright. If you think he think he's good enough for you, then I'll at least pretend to trust your judgement. But I want to meet him at some point. I'm sure your mum agrees with me on this, at least?" he phrased it as a question, looking at his wife. Bernadette nodded. "Don't worry, dear. We're not going to scare him off or anything."

"But if he ever hurts you-" Dustin started.

"Dad! I can handle myself! Honestly, you'd think I was twelve!" Marina walked off, muttering to herself. Her parents shared a look. "Just think, some day you might have a Slytherin son in law," Bernadette began, with a suspiciously innocent glance at her husband. "Bernie, don't," he groaned. "She's still my little girl."

"I know, love. She's mine too."

spaceTobias flew through an open window straight to the young redhead, recognizing her as the girl his owner had been spending so much time with. He dropped down next to her and offered his leg and the letter attached to it, hooting playfully at her. He so rarely got to go anywhere that it was nice to have something to do.

Damien
Marina,

I hope you're settling in well at home and that everything is going well. I know you were worried about telling your parents about me, so I don't know if you've done so or not, but if you did I hope it didn't go horribly.

I'm writing because... well, honestly, I just have to tell you about how very strange my return home was. You know my father asked me to stay away from the house until he returned home that evening, so I did so, mostly wandering around the village and keeping an eye out for him (he usually apparates just outside the village and walks home, says he enjoys the exercise). When he appeared, I followed him home, not very closely, and ended up arriving at the house a minute or so after he did. I walked in on him talking to my mother about us. I interrupted and told them that I didn't care what they did, that I wasn't breaking up with you because of them. Then I may have lied a bit and told my mother that her Howler didn't bother you to rile her up, and I went to my room to pack in case my father made me leave the house.

The weird thing is... he didn't. He told me that he was proud of me for how I'd stood up for us, and that if this was really what I wanted, he could accept that... I'm not really sure that my mind has processed that yet, but... that's what he said. And he wants me to invite you and your parents over for dinner one night, although we need to figure out what to do about my mother. Father doesn't want to invite you into a hostile environment, which of course my home is so long as she's around. We're not sure what to do right now. But, I'll write you as soon as we figure it out.

I just wanted to update you, so you didn't worry or anything. Sorry it took me so long to write, like I said, I'm having a bit of trouble believing what's going on in my own home. Hopefully I'll see you soon.

Yours,
Damien

spaceTobias flew into the home and straight for the redhaired girl, giving her a friendly hoot and an adorable head tilt. He'd been sent to her home an awful lot of late, which was nice. Damien didn't send much mail usually. The sudden change was quite welcome to the sweet owl, and he rather liked his owner's friend. He put out his leg, almost looking like he was smiling. He didn't know what was going on, but Damien had been incredibly happy and nervous when he'd been writing these particular letters. Whatever was going on, it was exciting. There were two missives this time, one addressed to Marina and one to her parents..

Damien
Dear Mister and Missus Aldred,

My name is Damien Warren Edgeworth, and as I'm sure you are aware, I am your daughter Marina's boyfriend. I would like to invite your family to dinner with myself and my Father at our home this Friday evening at seven. He is eager to meet you both, and I am sure that you would like to meet me as well, given the circumstances. If you could reply with your preference for the meal, we would be certain to take this into consideration.

Sincerely,
Damien Warren Edgeworth

Damien
Marina,

The letter addressed to your parents is an invitation to dinner with my father and I. My mother has been... busy, in the evenings lately, away from home. I will tell you more about that when we have a moment alone. Anyway, on topic. My letter to your parents might be a bit formal... I tend to get that way when I'm nervous. You know that, of course. But I wanted to let you know in case they say something.

Anyway, dinner will be Friday at seven, if you all aren't busy. I hope that you can make it. I'm still a bit concerned that my mother might make an appearance, but we've been very careful about making sure that she has no idea to be home that night, and she's been leaving at around five every evening. If she isn't gone by the proper time, this letter's been enchanted so that I can add a message to it later. Check it around six on Friday in case she's home. I don't like the risk of having to cancel at the last minute, but I prefer that to your parents being subjected to her. I suppose you could pretend you were sick or something if you didn't want to be honest with them about why the plans have changed. I hope nothing happens and the evening goes well, but we can't be sure.

Hopefully, I'll see you Friday.

Yours,
Damien

It's just another war: Happy | Just another family torn: Oh, two letters! | Just a step from the edge: Bernadette | Just another day in the world we live in: Home |
Wearing

Marina scanned both letters, unabashedly reading both, despite the fact that one was addressed not to her, but to her parents. She smiled, a soft, happy one, as she sat down slowly on her window seat while reading. When she was finished she looked like she wanted very much to kiss someone, and it certainly wasn't the owl in the room. She dashed downstairs, grabbed a handful of owl treats, and gave Tobias all of them, stroked his head and murmured a quiet "Thanks," and then ran back out of the room, clutching the letters.

Downstairs she practically flung the letter addressed to her parents at Bernadette, who stopped sweeping the kitchen floor, and looked it over. "Oh, he sounds so polite! And look at that neat handwriting, Marina. You've got yourself a perfect little gentleman!"

There was a groan from the redhead. "Mum, don't encourage it! He's formal enough already, with the full name signature and everything! He's probably terrified of what you think of him."

"Please. I bet you secretly love it." Bernadette muttered, giving her daughter a knowing look.

"I do not! I'm just relieved he doesn't ask permission to kiss me and stuff, is all!" Marina practically shrieked.

"Really? So how often do you two spend 'kissing and stuff', hm?"

"MOTHER! Do not even go with that line of questioning! Just write a reply to the letter already!"

"Fine, fine. Shouldn't you be replying to that little love letter he sent as well?"

Marina went bright red, and glanced down at the letter in her hands. "It's not a love letter!" She backed out of the room at a rapid pace, leaving her mother to reminisce about being young and completely embarrassed about being head over heels for a boy.

                        A Cloaked Stranger

Amidst the outskirts of Dunstable, a hooded stranger clad in the deepest shadows lingers at the side of a house nestled in a muggle neighborhood. The garden was painted before them perfectly in plain view, and the kitchen window had its curtains drawn open to let the sun soak within. The roughspun cloak did well to conceal any hint of character upon the person as they stalked in the silence of the midday, barely ghosting by to the tune of chirping birds, buzzing crickets, and bursting water sprinklers. Tall and lanky, the frame was well hidden as they bade their time in daunting secrets.

Familial ties led them here, to keep the secret just that, a buried secret.

Bernadette consulted the faded and frayed cookbook, tapping her wand against the pages thoughtfully. She was by no means the best baker in the world; in fact she was pretty sure Dustin could make better cookies than her, but she was wanted to bake a cake today, for Marina. Her daughter had just gotten the letter a few days ago, notifying her of her being made a prefect. The girl had been thrilled, of course, and Bernadette figured she might as well bake something in celebration. So here she was, looking up an old recipe for red velvet cake from a cookbook that had most likely been an old wedding present, ages and ages ago. She whispered to herself under her breath, and then with a wave of her wand guided the cake into the oven. "There we go," she spoke aloud, pleased with herself. This just had to bake for a little while.

She sat down at the table by the window, where a warm patch of sunshine pored in. The dark haired woman flipped idly through the rest of the cookbook. Minutes passed slowly and contently, as they often seem to do on peaceful summer days. Until that is, she felt as though a shadow had fallen over blocking the sun. Bernadette turned in her chair, and stared out the window, blinking at the bright sunshine that still fell on her. Why did she feel as though she were being watched? Her blue eyes scanned the garden outside with a slight trace of anxiety. Maybe she was just being silly and paranoid. Here she was a grown woman, acting like a frightened child-

A hint of darkness, fleeting shadows out of the corner of her eyes, and the numbing, terrifying knowledge that someone was out there and watching her. All of this seemed hauntingly familiar, and she stood up, leaning on the table with her one good hand. Her breath caught in her throat, and there was a rushing noise in her ears. She felt trapped, she felt pinned in place, and her arm twinged painfully. And in that very moment, she was an eighteen year old girl again, screaming and twitching uncontrollably, crying and pleading. Bernadette slid to the floor, and began to shake, gasping for breath. It vaguely occurred to her that she was most likely hyperventilating, but by then she was too far gone.

The cake in the oven was beginning to burn, just as Marina entered the kitchen.

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

                        A Cloaked Stranger

Hark; for had they been seen? The titillating air of deceit had sat wretchedly close but not close enough, it was feared. The dust lay dormant on the floor, until it was rattled awake by the thrash of bones in their sockets, and muscles tied to its joints. Breath locked away in the ribcage, even the skeleton key couldn’t break it free without the threat of imminent demise balancing dangerously thin. Even her flesh was taut and stretched pale over those old bones, brandished by their mistake.

Could the cloaked figure dare to assume that that woman would bare their secret? Or would it have been wiser to assume that those secrets that stay buried, are the ones taken to the grave?

Though the shadows were few, the figure inched closer to gauge what they could. Despite the law, they raised a wand under the sanctity of their velvet robes to admonish a simple spell, the super sensory charm.

Now not a whispering voice would be unheard.

Marina bolted into the kitchen, brown eyes wide. She'd seen her mother like this before, unfortunately, but never this bad. "Mum!" she gasped, looking around wildly for any signs of something that might have triggered this. All she saw were the kitchen curtains fluttering in the summer breeze, and the oven engulfed in smoke. She snatched a towel off the counter, and pulled open the oven, revealing the charred remains of what looked like had been a cake. The redheaded girl coughed and fanned away smoke with the towel, hurriedly propping open the back door and opening every nearby window. Once she was certain there was no more threat of the kitchen going up in flames, she turned to her mother. "Come on, it's alright Mum," she said in a carefully measured tone, helping the small woman into a chair, and holding her hands. She couldn't get upset or afraid when her mother was like this, it would just make things worse. "Mum, it's fine, you're okay. They can't hurt you anymore," she said, trying to keep a desperate, nearly begging inflection out of her voice.

Just stay calm. She'll be back to normal soon. A flare of white hot fury bubbled in the back of her mind, in the shadows of her thoughts. The people who had done such horrible things to her mother; who had made her like this; deserved to die excruciatingly slow and painful deaths. She usually managed to keep her anger about the whole thing in check, as there was nothing she could do; she couldn't go back in time and save her mother; and the people, whoever they were, were probably long dead or rotting in Azkaban for some other horrid crimes. It was only her strong belief that karma was an even more vengeful b***h than her that comforted her. But now Bernadette seemed to be calming down; her shaking subsiding somewhat, and her hiccuping sobs slowing to a halt.

Her mother's pale blue eyes blinked and looked around, and she seemed to come back to herself, seeing her daughter standing before her for the first time. "Marina, I'm fine," she whispered, shaking off the last clutches of panic and surfaced memories. Even now, she still couldn't clearly remember anything from- It was probably best to stop thinking about it now. Bernadette began to try and stand, only to be firmly pushed back down into her seat by her daughter. "Don't stand, for Merlin's sake! What just happened?! I smelled smoke and had a really bad feeling so I came down here and saw you..."

Marina's voice choked off and she wiped at her eyes with the back of her hands. There was always a gnawing fear that her someday her mother would stay like that, shaking and mumbling like a little child on the floor, and she would never recognize her again. "You scared me, is all." she muttered almost apologetically, dropping her piercing gaze.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart. I don't want you to worry about me. I'm okay now, and everything's alright. I just thought I- You know what? It's nothing, absolutely nothing. Look, go read or find your cat, relax. I'm still going to bake you a cake; Prefect is nothing to scoff at!" Bernadette thanked the heavens above that she was naturally good at distracting her daughter and changing the subject.

Marina didn't believe her as readily as she might usually; she thought she saw her mother glance at the kitchen window for an instant. But now wasn't the time to argue and fight, so she decided to postpone any questioning for now. "I will," she said slowly, and started to leave, but looked back at her shoulder once more. "Are you sure you'll-

"Marina?" Her mother cut her off, which was rare, and she suddenly sounded very young and afraid, almost like a girl around her daughter's own age. "You know I love you so much, right? You and your father mean a lot to me, and I'm- I'm very lucky to have the both of you. You're my brave little girl, and you always will be."

The Slytherin swallowed hard, and nodded. "I know, Mum. But you're braver than I could ever be." She left the kitchen, with a distinct feeling of uneasiness that couldn't be shaken.

Bernadette stared out the kitchen window, her expression unreadable.

INTELLIGENCE without AMBITION is a BIRD without WINGS

I'm gonna FIGHT for what's RIGHT
Today I'm SPEAKING my MIND
And if it KILLS me TONIGHT
I will be READY to DIE
I've gotta FIGHT TODAY
To LIVE another DAY
SPEAKING my mind TODAY
My VOICE will be heard TODAY

Time rolled on slowly, without qualm or hindrance. A painstaking effort was taken with utmost care, handling ink as mighty as the sword. The owl itself that would carrion this letter was petite, soft natured and harmless, to every degree. It was its parcel that would carry out the brute of this. Not but an hour seemed to have passed when the owl had flown to the windowpane at Marina's side, and hooted contentedly.

Hours toiled on, the figure shrouded in secrecy and shadows had been vigilant for hours. But scarce a few figures could be seen through the windows of the home, and even scarcer a face would shine through the windowpane. Still, the figure waited, and bade their time. In the meantime, they shuffled through the grounds, eyeing the owl that rested in the kitchen, and having took note of the office space occupied in the attic where the man of the house dwells behind. They rummaged through the rubbage bin, in search for any minute detail that may one day lead to an advantageous circumstance.

And still, they lingered on. Dusk would rise and tear the bright blues and vivid pinks from the skies to be dominated by the full extent of the darkness. The looming figure dropped down to their knees in the bushes and waited in the underbrush. Their sights trained on the kitchen window as they waited for her, like clockwork, to being to cook.

Bernadette had always loved the kitchen. It was cozy and warm and usually smelled good, especially if Dustin was cooking. But today it felt cold and hollow, and grated on her already frayed nerves. A steady stream of nightmares had been persisting all year, ranging from unsettling to terrifying. Sometimes she saw them killing her helpless mother and sisters, who stared at her accusingly with dead, unseeing eyes, other times she saw her daughter surrounded by fire and screaming for her, but Bernadette could not help her. And then sometimes she saw her husband being tortured in front of her, and he smiled faithfully through the pain. Last night she'd awoken with a start, trembling all over, and unable to calm down until Dustin lovingly wrapped his arms around her in his sleep.

She glanced at Banshee as she walked into the room. The owl was alert and restless, beady eyes staring intently out the kitchen window. Bernadette stiffened slightly. She was sure, nearly positive that she was being watched, and had been for quite some time now. She didn't know exactly why, but she had a feeling that couldn't be shaken. That feeling being that it had something, no perhaps quite a lot, to do with the fateful night that had changed her life forever so long ago. The former Ravenclaw forced herself to not look out the window and instead stared blankly at the stove.

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.

Our love would be forever: Stressed | And if we die: Is someone out there... | We die together: Bernadette | And lie, I would never: Aldred Home |

Dustin followed his wife into the kitchen, face uncharacteristically drawn and worried. Something was up with his wife as of late. She'd been suffering from nightmares. He could tell by how tired she was in the mornings. And she was on edge and tense constantly. Her episodes were becoming more frequent as well. He wanted to help her more than anything, but she refused to tell him what was wrong and instead brushed it off. It was frustrating and disheartening. He was her husband. Shouldn't she be able to trust him?

She was staring blankly at the stove. Dustin sighed and came up behind her, putting a hand on her shoulder. "Bernie. Want me to cook tonight?"

She jumped, having not heard him come up behind while she was lost in thought. "Sure,"she said very quietly, moving out of the way.

Dustin looked pained for a moment before opening up one of the cabinets. "Pasta alright with you?" he asked with forced casualness and she nodded distantly. Utter silence fell over the room. And that was what raised Dustin's guard. Banshee. The owl was never silent for more than a moment. It was constantly making noise. But tonight the bird was silent, except for the rustling of feathers. The blonde man turned to find both the owl and his wife looking towards the window. "What?" he asked aloud. "Is something out there?"

It was mostly a joke, really, but the look on Bernadette's face stopped his chuckle in it's tracks. Dustin stiffened, and looked at her. Her blue eyes avoided his gaze. That was it. He'd had enough. His wife wouldn't even look him in the eyes, his owl was mysteriously silent, and cooking pasta was becoming a stressful activity. The former Hufflepuff snatched his wand out of his pocket, and strode purposely toward the hack door.

"Dustin. What are you doing?!" the dark haired woman's voice rose in pitch and wavered, belying her near panic.

Dustin ignored her. If someone was in his yard, looking in his window- well, he might just get angry. A fit of temper might actually do him some good right now. At least someone would be showing emotions besides fear and anxiety in this house for once. He opened the back door and leaned against it peering out into the darkness. "If someone's out there,"he called out evenly, "You had better be on your merry way, because my bull crap level is at an all time low." He fingered his wand and waited.

Banshee let out a piercing, accusatory screech.

Bernadette took out her own wand and tried not to feel so afraid.
