What does money matter when you are going to kick the bucket before you can use it? Aside from answers, the rest isn't exactly sun-drops and rainbows." He didn't know how bad of a life Rin had it, but he had a nice life. All that she mentioned were things he already had before coming here.
He took a sip of his coffee, pointing to one man further off in the corner who was staring at his food, not eating. "Tell him this place is heaven. I've been noticing people like those a lot more than I did the first day I came here." He might wind up being just as messed-up in the head like that guy.

It just means no more wasting time with stupid s**t that no longer matters. I mean. Okay look. This is embarrassing but before I came here I never drank or partied or even had sex. It just wasn't the sort of things good little girls contributing to normal society did. I was supposed to work, marry, have kids, retire, and then eventually die. Here you fight evils, save humanity, learn the secrets to the world normal humans can only hope to dream of. We don't get what they get, but they don't get what we get either. It's a trade off in a way," she turned her hand a bit, "I guess what I'm trying to say is, we are our own men now. We're in charge of a different destiny than we were before. Some people can't handle the change."
She took a sip of her coffee.

He didn't look at her, instead staring at the poor guy in the corner, just staring at his place.

"No. I'm saying maybe that guy you're staring at can't. The fact you are talking to people... working... TRYING. I'm hopeful that you are a new comrade and not someone who... ... well...," she cleared her throat sharply, "Just don't go around making friends and then giving up. It's not fair to us. Just saying."

"Well, hard to not make friends when they offer coffee." He went quiet before looking to her. "Can we talk again later sometime? I'm going to..." He gestured with his mug to the guy staring at his plate.

Rin looked back at the guy and then Melvin again and smiled just slightly, "Of course, I'd be glad to. Perhaps tomorrow sometime we can watch people sparring... or get that movie going somehow." She gave the guy a wary look again and then Melvin, "And... well. Good luck?" she held her mug up slightly with a forced hopeful look.

"Yeah." He said, looking at the guy. "This will be a blast." He wasn't a counselor, and maybe he just wanted to escape the current talk, but everyone talking about death and pretty much summing up he'd die soon because he was a trainee bothered him. Maybe he just didn't want to see some guy and be like everyone else, saying he'd probably die too. Then again, they might all be dying soon anyways so why did it matter. He sure as hell wasn't the counselor type. In fact, he knew that the he left the coffee pots. "Sounds good. I'll see you tomorrow. Try and...be dressed for it." He said, and headed off towards the distant table.

Rin turned and started to leave looking down at herself along the way. The hell was wrong with what she had on?
