He had a nice laugh, much better than his snarl and hate. She relaxed when he swatted, and stuck out her own tongue. For Carltis' tongue, Rochelle could not have been less prepared. Sure, some guys had said they could but she had never actually seen someone fold their tongue like that. The simple things in life were sometimes the most amusing and this was once of those times.

"That's crazy awesome," she said, fingers twitching up to poke. She stopped herself before her hand left the ground and the dimpled grin returned in its place. "Maybe you should. With an ocarina, though, not a person. I'm a fan of semi public but that's a bit too much. And huh. Guess that means you have twice the options."

One might have been able to hear the gears clicking in her mind at that moment. She never thought Aleck to be boring, not ever unlike some alternate universe may have at the beginning, but she'd never heard a peep over him liking anyone. "... Although I gotta ask. Like. You and Aleck didn't get along if I remember correctly. Did that... change when in a 'both, either, depends' situation? I mean, out of all the people to be fighting whers together, it wouldn't be you two. Not unless there's that opposites attract thing going down."

Carltis looked puzzled for a moment, and then laughed again. "Oh, that. No, nothing like that; we just happened to run into one another and ended up watching each others backs." Getting beaten up by crazy women, and fighting twelve year olds; he was glad they had quietly mutually agreed that those things hadn't happened. "Can't say I actually did much wher fighting," he added, nibbling at his lower lip as he recalled the unpleasant incident, "took a couple of swings at it - I'd given him my whip - but after that he told me to drag bleeding guy out of the way. I wasn't about to disagree, sort of his call to make given the circumstances." He would rather have had the wher; he'd never seen that much blood before, let alone had to deal with it and he was not in a hurry to repeat the experience.

"Anyway," Carltis dismissed the past with a shake of his head, "I suppose you could call that a bonding experience, but I'm not interested in him in that sense." The whole awful time had been a bonding experience really he supposed, with everyone present; he'd even warmed a little to the ponsy wingleader, in as much as he wouldn't mind having her on his side in another fight. He still thought she was a complete pretentious tit though.

"Your title is still Wher Wrestler and I don't give a s**t if anyone protests," Rochelle sniffed primly. "Sounds like a good thing you guys ran into each other then. bereck is bleeding guy, right? Him? Yeah, Aleck wouldn't have been able to pull him out of the way. He's not..." she waved a hand and then poked Carltis' arm to demonstrate what that trailing off meant. "He was probably best left with the whip.

"But huh. He never mentioned liking anyone before so I don't know what way he swings either. That was five turns ago so for all we know he had a harem full of soft spoken tech girls," A wry grin tugged at the corner of her mouth. Shards. Five turns. ...carltis had been right, shitty timing. "You guys escaped a wher, though. That's badass in itself. Did you keep the whip?"

Carltis nodded. "That's right, and yeah, Aleck is kind of built like a reed." He was compared to Carltis anyway, although to be fair Carltis was not exactly a standard unit of muscle-measurement.

"I've no idea about him really," Carltis shrugged and raised a hand to his face, working a finger under the bandages over his eye to scratch at an itch. When he noticed what he was doing he pulled his hand back and grunted. "The healers will have my balls if I rip the cut open," he grumbled vaguely before returning to the subject at hand with; "I've seen him around the Weyr of course though, and if he's with anyone he's not obviously so. I didn't see or hear him expressing concern for ladies or gentlemen of his hypothetical harem during the siege either, so if it or a partner of any kind exists I suppose they can't mean all that much to him."

"You've both gotten really tall. Like, super tall. I think they're putting something in the water and the short people here just aren't drinking enough of it." It'd be nice if there had been something in the water. Rochelle felt short around them when younger and now they towered over her even more. Around the two guys she felt like a child all over again, albeit an especially rambunctious sort. "You grew into your grumpy and he grew into his glasses, so everything is alright I guess."

Rochelle eyed up the scratching Carltis, her nose wrinkled up. "That has to suck. But if the stitches are coming out, shouldn't it be okay to itch at it a little? ... Or, rather, that might be why it's itchy." Poor Carltis. Half a face and nowhere to go. Rochelle picked up one of the rounder rocks, rolling it in her fingers for a second before flinging it towards the water. "Maybe he's in a secret love affair with the Weyrwoman or the Weyrleader. Maybe both. We can ask Bereck if he doesn't try to scowl me to death."
PostPosted: Wed Sep 12, 2012 12:56 pm

"I suppose I'll ask the wonderful healers tomorrow," Carltis shrugged, "there hasn't been much time to ask about it - they've had much bigger things to worry about than a little cut like this - so I've just been being careful, rather not somehow shaff things up and ruin my eye, which is hypothetically alright at the moment."

...Shards. If he'd lost the eye he might have been banned from standing! That thought sent a look of belated fear flashing across his face and promoted him to touch the bandages lightly again; he'd been even more lucky than he had realised.

Luckily Rochelle quickly pulled his mind back from that awful near miss and he gave an incredulous 'ha!' at the idea of Aleck with the Weyrleaders. "Well, he'd be almost the last suspect on the list which would be ideal in a secret lover. If you do ask I want to be there to see it."

He really had got very lucky indeed if he really thought about it. Material things he could replace, in time he would get used to Trine, he wasn't going to take lasting harm from this and now he was actually around several more clutching dragons than he had been before. All in all he'd come out of the revolution pretty well, even if he did feel like he was on the wrong side when it came to ideology.

Oh, she saw that twitch of fear on his face, how it flirted with the sudden unbidden knowledge that something horrible could have - should have - happened. Sympathy tugged at her; here was a guy who just wanted a sharding dragon and in order to get one, you must be perfect, inside and out. ... well, sort of. Imbalances were frowned on, tempers were just fine.

Rochelle reached across the little space between them to pat his shoulder gently. "Your eye will be perfectly fine," she said with the finality of someone who knows they are always and forever right. "We kept it from getting infected and the healers didn't need to do anything to it. You don't have all your eyebrow but you have your eye. I mean, you might want to put on an eyepatch anyway, just to be all snarly, but you're fine."

Her hand dropped then, the glasscrafter shrugging. "Who knows, maybe Aleck secretly runs the whole Weyr. I say we investigate and find you. Or just pretend we don't know in order to keep our lives safe from underground plotting."

"Of course it's fine," Carltis responded with a trace of snap back in his voice, "I was just... thinking was all." It would be fine, and if it wasn't he would lie about it because maybe dragons didn't care quite as much as candidatemasters insisted they did. Maybe they didn't care much at all but candidatemasters were careful to keep 'unsuitables' away from the precious creatures. He didn't like that thought, and so he suspected it and stored it away for later analysis.

"Maybe he does run it all, or did," Carltis went on, still a bit grudging but edging back away from bad temper again. "You know what they say; watch out for the quiet ones. Maybe we can investigate secretly. We can have disguises or something."

"Good grief, you're prickly. No need to get defensive, not everything I say is an attack. Trust me, big guy, when I insult you, you'll know without a doubt that I'm doing it. I'm real subtle-like," Rochelle snorted at her own bad joke, or at least her attempt at one. She tapped her shoe against his again, eyes drooping closed. "All I'm saying is that I didn't see any eye goo. Just blood."

And that was that, as close as she got to comforting once snapped away. Man, at least he hadn't slapped her like some of the people in the infirmary that time. Rochelle learned eventually what people did or did not like and Carltis seemed to not appreciate her being overly nice unless it involved snark or sexual innuendo. That was fine too.

"It's the quiet ones who are underestimated. Then they end up running Weyrs or beating the s**t out of people with chairs. Well a whip in his case. Can I have a fake mustache? I'm sure I have some clothes that might fit you. They'd never know."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 14, 2012 3:42 am

"Eye goo?" Carltis stared with one-eyed incredulity and then laughed briefly; the unpleasantly emotive description made him feel much better than coddling reassurances. "Now all I can think of is the herdbeast eyeball I cut up one time to see what it was like inside." The tap of Rochelle's foot was ignored; he didn't feel comfortable returning the gesture, but he didn't feel the need to repel it either.

"I think your shirts might be a bit lacking in shoulder, and a bit too generous in the frontal regions due to you having ample tracts of land," Carltis continued, tossing the stone he was holding into the water; it only managed two hops but he didn't pay it much attention. "You can have a fake mustache if you want, but I'm not sourcing it for you. I expect our adventure and eventual uncovering of Aleck's master plan to take over Pern will be a tale for the ages, mainly because we'll join him in his dark endeavors and will make knowing the story by heart compulsory on pain of pain."

"Eye goo! I mean, eyes cook up semi-solid but it's not like they're not all goo and... like, lenses. I think that's what you call it," She grinned wide, chin proud in the air because, ha, b***h, she totally won. A flip of the air told all there was to tell about that. "The herdbeast was dead first right? That would be uncomfortable.

"... Did you just call my breasts ample tracks of land?" She let out a bark of laughter and looked down at her shirt. Rochelle poked at her chest for not the first time that day, eyebrows arched with a grin. "Ample tracts of land. No wonder boyfriends like games of trying to throw things down my shirt, it's like placing claim on farmland. Seriously? You guys suck." Another chortle and she tossed a rounded rock in the water to follow his. Plunk. "Will you be writing up the tale? You can make it full of big words and complicated to boot in order to fully test the loyalty of his subjects with random song checks. It will be a story of epicness with occasional ocarina solos and warnings to beware of the quiet ones."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 14, 2012 4:49 pm

"Course it was dead," Carltis scoffed, lying back and folding his hands behind his head; being prone might be vulnerable, but he was confident that if she tried anything he could kick her in the teeth without trouble. Wriggling a bit to settle the stones under him into a better position he looked up at Rochelle with a smirk. "I was quoting; a rather famous comedy. I think it was written by a man though. Oh, and don't forget about the whips; come a long way with me, my whip, so it should get an important role in the tale just like any other Item of Significance." The capital letters were almost audible, and Carltis rolled his eyes. "Could do with more books with euphemisms like ample tracts of land, and fewer with worn out plot devices like the ring, blade, pendant, insert-other-option here passed down from parent, tutor, ancestor or hard won in combat or Trial that Proves the Hero's Nobility."

"I don't know. You could have grabbed it and hauled it down to pluck it's eye from the skull yourself for all I knew," She half turned, shoulder dipping to look down at Carltis. Brave man, to recline on the rocks so. "It might surprise you that they don't usually put on shows or read comedies over there in the crafter hall while we're trying not to drop hot glass on our hands and legs and other things."

She flicked a very tiny rock towards his hip, a small smile playing on her lips. "Wasn't aware that was a thing with the worn out plot devices. Hmmm. see, if we're going with plant things, I can think up a few things that are horribly dirty and have to do with flowers and petals and all of that."
PostPosted: Sat Sep 15, 2012 3:35 pm

Carltis idly scuffed a few stones in Rochelle's general direction, showing her his teeth in what was this time a joking snarl. "I save plucking the eyes out of living things for my enemies, I'll have you know. Drink out of their skulls too, once properly cleaned. Really though, no plays? Not even in the evenings? Don't you have any time for culture? Anyway, flower euphemisms aren't dirty; not even close."

After a moment something seemed to occur to Carltis and he looked at Rochelle's chest thoughtfully. "Have you ever dropped out glass on your chest? Shards, you could almost use those things as a shelf."

She flicked one of the stones back at him, sticking out her tongue in return. It didn't wraggle about in an impressive display as Carltis had shown but she did her best to look like a petulant child either way. That was the good part about being an adult: acting like a child. "I get bored easily. Sitting there for hours on end sounded boring, so no one ever told me about anything going on. Maybe there were ones I didn't know about. Spent most of my time with friends and work."

Rochelle looked down at her chest and then back to him. She grinned and pulled out one of her baubles from her pocket - she always had a piece or two on her person, something to show off if need be or barter with if the time called for it. "I use it to hold pens and stuff all the time. Bits of jewelry. When I work though, it's usually in the stuf you saw me in during the revolution - bound down, baggy as hell, ugly, so nothing really ever, you know, scorches."

And with that, she tucked the bauble away, and not in her pocket.

"I do have very real worries about smothering boyfriends, though."
