a. Turn left and follow the path north toward the bridge referenced by the sign.

Alkanet had stopped to look at the various options laid before him. He could go toward the nearest bridge or the one mentioned...or he could go across the water and carry his bicycle. The last option seemed like a good one but he couldn't be sure the water would be easy to get across, that there wouldn't be a deep part or anything; thus that option was struck out. Now for the bridges he had two options, and both sounded and looked good but the sign did say the one to the left...

That was where he headed, to the left.

c. Turn right and follow the path south toward the bridge within sight.

Väinämöinen knew that he didn't have enough strength to carry his bike across the river. And the maintained biking road was too far away. So, he decided to make his way towards the bridge that he saw near.

((Uhh, sorry about the crappy RP reply. Brains don't work well after just waking up. ^^;; ))

a. Turn left and follow the path north toward the bridge referenced by the sign.

The next leg of the event took them past some familiar sights -- other racers, sitting out on the sidelines! It looks like they were having trouble with their bikes. Roarke returned a wave and a smile to a plucky Squire that wasn't letting it get him down.

When she reached the river intersection, she paused to consider the routes opening up before her on the wooded path, forfeiting precious moments (in race terminology, as moments were prolific). Though the water looked like it would only come up to about her waist, it could be dangerous; much like the mountain detour, Roarke had to consider that she would not be simply getting herself across the river, but pulling the bike along also. A bridge in the distance caught her eye, though so, too, did a sign that read "Maintained Bridge Route." Maintained was a lovely word, wasn't it? Decision made, the page peddled onward.

EDIT: Sorry to have to edit! I c+p'd the wrong choice at the top, derp.

The Space Cauldron

a. Turn left and follow the path north toward the bridge referenced by the sign.

It's an extremely long ride, the distance just under a third of the entire race in and of itself. Luckily, the dirt road soon became paved once more, and you found yourself back on track with a flat, if winding ride alongside a picturesque river. Eventually, long after those that took the other routes have disappeared around the bend, you reach the bridge! It looks quite new, a modern work of concrete, and several attendants are there to cheer you on and offer refreshments!

b. Hoist your bike on your shoulders like a super star and wade across the river.

Forget bridges! You are a KNIGHT with the strength of a thousand reincarnations! You have little trouble lifting your bike, and begin to wade into the water. When you're halfway across, however, your foot slips on a mossy, slick rock, and you fall, your bike crashing on top of you.

Your ankle is sprained, if not broken, and hurts far too much to put weight on it! It takes the rest of your energy to get out of the water! You're definitely out of this race! Luckily, you can see some fellow knights heading back your way on foot, to help you back to a rest stop for treatment.

c. Turn right and follow the path south toward the bridge within sight.

As you draw closer to the old bridge, you realize that its not just the path beyond that is overgrown. This relic is made of wood, and covered with moss. Perhaps it was a part of the original path, from the first olympic bicycle race! Regardless of the history, you begin to pedal across the creaking bridge and make it halfway across before the rotted wood breaks beneath your tires.

A flew planks fall through the ropes of the later into the water, and lead to a cascading effect, the bridge itself falling further and further apart. You manage to scramble backward - without your bike! It, too, finds itself in the river, swept away downstream.

Without a bicycle, you're out of the race, and begin to make your way back up the path, only to discover a few drenched racers in need of some assistance. They at least, look happy to see you!

PROMPT FIVE - THE FINAL STRETCH!

Soon enough, you and the others are crossing the bridge and pedaling up a steady incline. When you reach the top, you realize two things. First, that the end of the course is in sight, though there are several hills between it! You're on the last legs of the journey! Secondly, you are in the group of front-runners for this race!

TIME TO BRING IT HOME, CHAMP!

Do You

a. Pedal hard down this hill to get ahead.
b. Coast your way down to conserve your energy.
c. Take a middle approach between the two.

c. Take a middle approach between the two.

Just a little bit further. Juuuust a little bit further. Aria had been playing conservatively and it had been helping her so far in the race. Now was not the time to stop. She alternated between pedaling hard and coasting; she had to save her energy just in case she needed it..

b. Coast your way down to conserve your energy.

While it seemed like he was out in thel ead, something he was shocked by really, Alkanet wasn't about to get ahead of himself and go speeding off like an idiot. For one doing something like that would only tire him out faster, and he'd been doing fairly good with keeping a good energy level, but also what did it matter if he won or lost? Yes his princess would be thrilled, in all likelihood, if he won but she would be pleased with however he did. Not to mention he wasn't here to win but to have fun and get away from his planet for a short bit of time. So Alkanet decided to take his time and enjoy this.

a. Pedal hard down this hill to get ahead.

Paved roads again! Roarke of Pluto had resigned herself to 48km of packed dirt, so the winding road accompanied by the calming sounds of the river to help pass the distance were a lovely surprise. Such rowdy bits of nature, she decided, were better suited to camping and hiking than trying to roll yourself along on two wheels.

Roarke took a quick not-quite-stop for refreshments (and high 5s) on the bridge. There seemed to be fewer competitors still. Perhaps they had forded the river or taken the other bridge and were now far ahead? The page didn't regret her decision, but she was interested in how they had fared. She distracted herself with those thoughts and what she had learned of the middle-history of Jupiter up the next hill. The race was really beginning to weigh on her. How much long--

Ah, the finish line! Further, there looked to be no other competitors between her pack and there; though, there were a bunch of hills and not so much energy left. Using the thrill of the last leg to push her onward, Roarke put all of her legwork into peddling quickly down this hill.

Momentum -- it was a scientific concept to be sure yet it was one of those tried-and-true things that everyone had experienced at some point in their life. Who says that giving it your all is never rewarding? They were about to regret it for as you pedaled with all your remaining energy, gravity pushed behind you down the hill. Even though you were probably starting to become exhausted from the length of the race, it was on your side! Or rather, it was at your back as you flew down the hill towards the finish line with a little extra OOMPH making you feel like you could conquer the world.

Well, if not the world, at least the race! Though maybe it was that pep talk instead...well who cares?! You've won! Victory is yours (and so is the gold)! Congratulations all around!

b. Coast your way down to conserve your energy.

You've given your best effort but it's been a long race. Looking down the hill at what is left between you and the finish line makes you think that maybe you just need to scale it back a little bit. There's a burst of energy left inside of you over that last small hill towards the finish line; momentum and gravity will carry you that far...hopefully!

Hey! What did you think was going to happen? You relied on two outside forces to get you the rest of the way there and though you did make it to the finish line eventually, it was coasting in with the breeze in your hair after the other two front-runners. Oh, that's all you wanted was the breeze in your hair? Well...have a bronze medal anyway!

c. Take a middle approach between the two.

Truth is always found where the lines overlap and cross. Unfortunately for you it was winning a cycling race and not truth that you were aiming for in this race! It was a logical decision though and not one to be discouraged; the hill did most of your work for you as you moved towards the finish line right behind that person pedaling like a madman through the rest of the course. Respectable second place is yours! Pacing yourself has paid off in the end and you should be proud.

So maybe it should be that respectability is found where middling effort is given? Wait, that makes no sense! Well, in any case, congratulations on your silver medal!

CONGRATULATIONS WINNERS!

Gold: Roarke of Pluto
Silver: Aria of Cosmos
Bronze: Alkanet of Pluto

You've pulled out ahead of everyone else and won gold, silver, and bronze to the cheers of your friends and the jeers of those people who aren't that fond of you. Your planets will be proud to call you their knights and you've done an excellent job representing yourself as a true athlete...and okay maybe a very lucky person as well.

Thank you to all of our cycling entrants and congratulations to the winners!
