When Aleck showed up Becka stepped respectfully away from Bereck, she went to go and wash up, to get the blood off her hands.... shards was she really shaking that badly? .... Leaning on the side she took a deep breath now that she had the time to think. Bereck was stable... but despite the fact she'd told Carltis that the masterhealer would be alright, she wasn't sure. The man had lost so much blood... and was so cold, she couldn't do much while he was still so weak. There were things she could give him for his heart... but that could be dangerous right now. She chocked back a sob. "No.... no i will NOT cry... " she thought to herself, it wasn't just her patient that needed her to be strong, Aleck would need her to be confident too... but shards... it was hard to be confident when you barely had a clue what you were doing... Shells.. she was only an Apprentice.. she wasn't supposed to do work like she just had done on Bereck. She wanted to go and check on Berath, while she was sure Aleck had done his best on the dragon, there was no healer to check ... except her, but Aleck and Bereck needed her to be here right now, in case Aleck had questions.. or Bereck woke.

[Berath]

Berath watched Aleck retreat back into the human side of the infirmary. She then looked down at the muscular young man who had come to fetch him. The young man looked back.

"So I'll just-" he jerked a thumb over his shoulder "-go make sure nobody comes in and tried to kill everyone from that end. I assume you have it covered in here, green?"

she responded, making him startle slightly,

With that dealt with she reached out for Bereck's mind again, sending feelings of calm and reassurance, trying not to let her fear seep into her thoughts.

****************

[Carltis]

He was not especially accustomed to being addressed by dragons, and the sudden voice in his mind sent a bit of a chill down his spine. "Right, Berath," he muttered, trying to cover the moment of surprise by squaring his shoulders and scowling. "Just give a roar if you get in trouble." Exactly what he could do against something that was giving this great lump of muscle issues he wasn't sure but.... Yes actually, he could help her; if it was a problem with humans he could fight them for her.

Feeling a little better about his potential usefulness Carltis turned away and followed Aleck back into the infirmary, closing the door to the dragon side behind him. Great, back in here with weepy girl, unconscious guy, and guy he didn't really know and who was very much occupied with the central personage of the list.

Glancing over at the doors he weighed up his options and eventually settled on the girl. Stalking over to the apprentice, he folded his arms across his chest. "So now what, miss orders? Didn't you want him moved? What can be prepared in advance for other wounded coming in?" If she started crying again he was going to smack her. It probably wasn't fair, she looked about the same age as the dead girl, and this was a lot for her to deal with....

The dead girl.

"Oh, and do yourself a favour," he jerked a thumb at the covered body some beds down from where they stood, "don't lift that sheet." She'd probably known the girl in passing at least; she didn't need to see her without a throat.

****************

[Bereck]

That was what wanted his attention; Berath. He tried to reach out to her in return, but it was rather difficult. Something else had been bothering him, that being Aleck. It was dangerous here; he was fuzzy on why that was, but it was definitely dangerous and so he needed to know where Aleck was, to know he was safe....

Maybe he'd fallen asleep and Berath was trying to tell him that Aleck was getting into the healing supplies again.

He really could do without a repeat of the Numbweed Incident.

Time to go and find him then.

Eyes snapping open Bereck sat up abruptly. "Aleck don't touch that!" He then slumped back down on the bed, his eyes closing again.

His brain ticked over a little more, and he remembered something about whers again. As the reduced pain and Berath's nudging allowed him to drift back closer to proper consciousness his eyes fluttered back open. Aleck was present, in one piece, and older than predicted. Feeling rather lost he curled his fingers around his son's. " 'llo.... Don't touch any whers." That seemed like an important thing to pass on.

[Created Character: Journeyman Glasscrafter Roche, highly irritated at a revolution occuring during her shift]

Shards, shells, and buggery, her foot hurt. That whole thing with dropping a big bit of glass on your foot, leather or not, that thing hurt. Then (of course!), all sorts of horrible hells broke loose, as if they'd planned it all to happen on her very first shift at her home Weyr.

Nnngh.

Next thing she knew, she'd run into Whats-His-Name or something.

Roche limped to the infirmary, draped in a shapeless dark dress, auburn hair all in a poof about her head, cheeks smudged with a bit of dirt in some sort of attempt to keep to the shadows. She held a bit of glass in one small hand, round and absolutely unable to harm someone with it, but glinting in some light would intimidate!

...right?

Shards.

Oh look! Infirmary door! Roche flopped against it dramatically, forhead to the door. She knocked at it with the glass. "Hello? Anyone in there? Please don't kill me, I'm not dangerous." The curvy woman pulled open the door, eyes peeking through the open space.

Ew. Something smelled metallic.

Becka jumped when Carltis returned and spoke to her, she'd been so lost in her own thoughts, trying desperately to get herself together, trying not to just break down and cry. "Yes.. yes we need to move him but... let his son have a moment with him first, just in case......" she didn't need to say it, the tension hung on the air. Despite the growing signs of returning to conciousness, Bereck had lost a great deal of blood and Becka WAS only an apprentice. thrown in at the deep end. She bit her lip as she tried to think of what they could prepare. "Clean water... blankets on hand will be good, i think people are going to be in shock" she said, shells... SHE was in shock..."bandages... clean ones... i might have to cut some of the large sheets up..." She would wait for Aleck to finish speaking to his father before going over again. She glanced over in the direction he indicated and she visibly blanched, knowing there was a dead body under there... she shuddered.

She snapped her head round when Bereck spoke abruptly, shells... he'd jerked up, she went over to where he was now laying again, "Aleck, sorry to disturb you" she said quietly, remembering his anger before "i need to check he didn't just pull some of his stitches" she said, eyeing him carefully. She jumped at a new voice in the Infirmary and immediately looked to Carltis, with his whip, out of those present the big weyrbrat was the most able to deal with the intruder.

[Carltis]

Just in case. She really hadn't wanted to end that sentence, had she? Moving onto practical stuff he could do something about was welcome, and he nodded to her list with a frown on his face. "Right, I'll sort that, then get back to the-"

Knock knock.

"-door. Excuse me." Those last two words, rather than being polite, sounded like a threat to whoever was doing the knocking.

Becka was off to deal with the injured healer again in any case apparently, and he hastened past her and past the bed to the infirmary doors. Taking his whip from his belt he kept himself behind them to be out of immediate stabbing range and then peered around. "Oh," he raised his eyebrows, "it's you." Roche, wasn't it? He Scowled at her. "Which side are you on then?"

That Aleck looked so relieved when his father suddenly sat up and shouted nonsense suggested this happened on a semi-regular basis. "Hey Dad," he laughed weakly with a fond look for the prone man in his eyes. "No whers. How're you feeling?" It wasn't a question he expected a good answer to - it was just something to ask, talking for the sake of making the connection than the actual content of what was said.

He glanced up briefly at the appearance of another girl, this one more familiar than the apprentice healer whose name he still didn't know, but she was a self-professed friendly - Rochelle, he remembered, and promptly lost the name from his thoughts. The voices around him were foggy and indistinct, like clouds, but one snatch of phrase sent a little chill down the back of his neck.

just in case

He might have remembered it, brought it up later - so Dad, your apprentice said - but right now, with Bereck lying there gray-faced, the whole situation out of everyone's league and a guilty twinge for snapping at Becka lingering, it only manifested itself as a little frown. It didn't quite vanish when he looked up.

"You need to move him?" No yelling, just a quiet, unhappily worried look. Though he made room for Becka by shifting toward the bed's head, he was loath to let go of Bereck's hand.

[Bereck]

"Feel.... Cold."

Very cold actually. Cold and... his heart was racing, and his breath coming far too fast. He was trying to connect how he felt to what he remembered, but the last thing he remembered before this was Aleck making a volcano with vingear and baking soda. He also remembered going to a demonstration of Dragonlights with Aleck, but that felt like it came before the volcano, but Aleck was older with the Dragonlights, in fact he was about the age he looked now, though he couldn't focus quite right on his son's face for some reason....

Something had happened.

With whers.

"Move?"

What? Who was moving who where?... He was lying on a bed. The sheets were wet, and sticky. His heart was racing and his breath quick and too shallow, and quite obviously his thoughts were muddled up horribly. Blood. Lying in blood, in his own blood and-

"They killed her. Sesina. She's dead."

One of his apprentices. Gone.

Another one was here though, her voice registered now and he took in her form and face and....

What had he been thinking just now?

"Becka." He blinked up at the young woman. "Have you finished preparing those needlethorns yet? I told you candlemarks ago! This is an apprenticeship, not a holiday, and if you don't-" why did he have to stop and gasp for breath? "-don't show me results chop chop you'll find yourself stirring numbweed. Is that clear?" He hoped it was clear to her because it wasn't to him. He felt as though something important had just slipped out of his mind, and Berath was trying to talk to him but for some reason he couldn't focus on her. Odd. Very odd.

[Roche]

"Are you stupid?" Always tactful, that Rochelle. She stared at Carltis with the most epic lineface ever, her thumb rubbing hard at the smooth contours of the glass like a worry stone. He stood a head and a half taller than her than he had ten turns ago and still she frowned, undeterred by his somewhat familiar scowl that had not faded through the turns. Taller and older, yes, but she'd not thought he'd end up getting stupid as well. "I'm on my side, the side that doesn't stir wherrie dung all over the place on my first week back. Stop beign a deadglow and my name isn't 'you'."

One hand flailed in the air before landing on the glasscrafters generous hip. She huffed. "Let me in. I think I broke my toe and it is way more important than your issues."

A pause.

"Good to see you too, Carltis."

[Calrtis]

"Hi Rochelle," he returned the unimpressed look, but got out of the way. "Welcome to the last bastion then, oh internally loyal one, please do have a seat and I'm sure the master healer will see to your poor toe the very second he's done bleeding over there." He shoved the door shut again and put his whip back on his belt.

After a brief pause he added; "Oh, and don't open that door over there, there's a big wher behind it."
PostPosted: Mon Jul 09, 2012 6:08 pm

[Roche]

"I've missed you too, Carltis," she snarked with a wave of her hand and another flat look. "Look at you, you're huge. Did you bench press a wher or-- wait, what? Bleeding?"

Her eyes darted towards the healer apprentice, Bereck, and Aleck. She recognized Bereck - or would, had he been standing tall and firm as he had been so many times before. Four years back, he'd been like that... and the kid near to that with the blank look was so much smaller. She remembered his name with the same vague sort of knowing she had with Carltis - too many times running into, weyrbrats all, and everything else having to do with a Weyrlife.

"Good grief," Rochelle tucked her bead into a pocket, calloused fingers rubbing along the hemmed flap of her pocket. "What do they feed you boys. You got gigantic, Aleck."

Took a minute there to remember his name in full form. Rochelle looked from Aleck to Carltis to his whip and back again. She frowned, squirmed a little in her place from just inside the infirmary. "... well shards. Right. Won't open the door and ... what now? Since uhm, she looks tweaked out and I have no idea what's going on."

Cai rushed into the infirmary, her boot heels ringing on the stone floors. Helped by a handful of resistance members she'd been able to make her way to the infirmary. One of the riders left behind had got the message that it was in resistance hands and had sent her to where she could help. Her brows furrowed, even in the one place there SHOULD be healers they had none? This Weyr was in big trouble. Her cowl was gone, leaving her only in her numbweed stained tunic and leggings, still the hot air within was enough to make her neck dampen within moments. How did these people stand living in such a humid weyr? She longed for the cool heights of Benden...for now lost to her.

Cai tugged her hair aside and took a moment to assess the situation. She looked about for someone who was obviously in charge...and could spot no one. In fact the place seemed full of children. Were all of the adults out fighting? That was a scary thought. "Hmph." She pursed her lips and removed her satchel from her shoulder, dropping it on a nearby counter. "Who's in charge here?"

[Carltis]

Carltis grunted to Rochelle’s snark; he didn’t have a lot to say in reply to all that. His head hurt. He’d forgotten about that until now in the rush of adrenaline, but it really did. Too many punches and kicks. His ribs and stomach didn’t feel great either actually... actually he felt pretty s**t all over, but he didn’t feel that he could really mention it given the current situation.

The appearance of another person however quickly distracted him from his discomfort; he swiftly grabbed his whip from his belt again and rounded on her. The new girl didn’t seem like she was here to attack anyone though, so he let the end of it coil loosely on the floor rather than cracking it at her.

“I’m in charge of guarding this side of the infirmary, she’s apparently currently in charge of patching people up at the minute, and there’s a dragon out there guarding the other entrance,” Carltis replied, indicating first himself, then Becka, and then the door that led out to where Berath was presumably lurking. “I've answered your question, so now it's your turn,” he went on, looking the newcomer up and down with hard eyes, “who the shaff are you, and what side are you on?”

I'm on the side of whoever will help me get my home back! Cai held her tongue and let her eyes trail over Carltis, taking in the boys healing injuries as well as the whip in his hand. He was in charge of guarding the infirmary? It was a good thing she had nothing deadlier than a couple graphite sticks and a notebook. She snorted, he'd learn he couldn't intimidate her that easily.

"If you've got a dragon out there then I'm probably on your side." She said coolly, her grey eyes meeting his. "Someone had the foresight to let us topside know that riders held the infirmary." Her tone indicated she doubted it was his idea. She looked away from him and back to the girl he indicated as the healer. She didn't look like she was in the best of shape either. Could Cai be the only uninjured person there? "I'm Cai, Healer Apprentice lately of Benden Weyr." Her long hair was once again flipped over her shoulder.

"Carltis has wonderful ideas," Rochelle agreed, flashing the newcomer a bright and genuine appearing smile. In fact, she all but beamed, head to the side. "I'm glad you seem to think so as well. It was Alecks idea to post the dragon at the door and the young ladies to get to healing right away. Although..."

She eyed up Cai critically, and her full lips pursed. "I didn't think they let children run around unsupervised. Are you sure you're old enough to be away from the creche?"

Cai didn't know she'd only just arrived herself, having no idea who decided what. Roche disliked people talking down to her Weyrfolk, the 'brats in particular, and especially not from a young apprentice from Benden. Benden!

Bugger Benden. This is Roche's Weyr. Respect!

Becka nodded to Aleck, "Yes preferably while he's still somewhat unconcious but i didn't want to disturb you" she said softly as she checked under the bandages she'd applied "Doesn't look like he burst any stitches thankfully" she said, relieved. She frowned when Bereck said he was cold and she pulled the blankets up over him a bit more.

"They killed her. Sesina. She's dead."

Becka's face went white... again and she looked over at the sheet covered body. She thought she was going to be sick, tears sprung to her eyes, Not Sesina... she'd been her friend, helped her a lot when she was overwhelmed ... Becka's hands shook as tears flowed freely though she didn't sob. "Oh Sesina....." she muttered.

When Bereck spoke to her... actually TO her, Becka's heart leapt... he was awake, she was freely crying, she didn't even bother to wipe them away. "Yes Bereck, i finished preparing the Needlethorns" she said, a huge relieved smile on her face as she played along, no sense in him. "I'll show you when you've rested ok master Bereck?" she said, her hear thudding. He'd live.. Becka was so relieved.

She hadn't paid much attention to what else was being said in the room until yet another person came bustling in. Becka took in the the stained tunic and leggings, looking up and not recognising the newcomer. When Cai announced herself, with attitude, Becka bristled. She was doing her best shardit. She frowned angrily at Cai and she could have kissed Rochelle for her defence of those already present in the Infirmary. "Unless you're going to get your hands dirty and help, i suggest you just sit down somewhere and keep your opinions to yourself" she snapped, she didn't mean to, she wasn't usually the snapping kind but so far she'd had about enough stress so criticism from another Healer Apprentice... not even from this Weyr, was the very last straw for Becka.
