“that’s the thing though, he doesn’t know his own strength. he is driven purely by emotion. he doesn’t think he just does. How many people does he have to kill to be considered a monster in your eyes. All of Manhattan, the whole united states, Steve, Natasha, Clint, Pepper…You? Bruce barely choked out the last word as his worst fear was vocalized. “i don’t hate him Tony, I really don’t. But he is a monster and the sooner you realize that, and the farther away from me you stay. The better. ” The elevator doors opened and Bruce walked out hoping maybe Tony would listen to him, maybe he would realize just how much danger he was putting himself in. Tears fell from his sparkling green eyes that held little brown after his latest encounter he pressed himself against the wall and fell to the ground silent sobs racking his body.
(someone just grew some ovaries lol)
Tony stood in silent shock as Bruce raised his voice to him and fled. His first instinct was to give the guy some space-- it's what the engineer himself often wanted on the occasions he got upset-- but he and Bruce were far from the same person. Banner /needed/ him. Or needed someone anyway. Stubbornly, Stark chased his lab partner down, finding him on the floor in a heap. He reached down to grab him under the armpits and hauled his a** up, holding him firmly against the wall. "Bruce, you listen to me," he said rather sternly, "I am /not/ staying away from you. You got that?"

Bruce felt himself being tugged upwards and pinned against the wall, he should have known that even speaking was in vain Tony was a horrible listener and even worse at following directions. He looked up at the man before him staring him straight in the eyes before speaking, “I am not going to let myself hurt you, I’m trying so hard to get this in control so I can let myself think about letting people near me. But you keep stopping me,” The tears were rolling down his face again but he never broke eye contact “why do you keep stopping me, do you want him to kill you, do you have a ******** death wish tony? You are the only person I let close enough and I am stupid and selfish for letting you this close to begin with. I can’t let him hurt you, now Please I’m begging you let me go to the lab and figure out how to control this so i don’t have to worry every dam second about getting so upset I accidentally crush every bone in your body.”
It was really really hard to keep from rolling his eyes to Banner's words. "First of all, you wouldn't be the first to suggest I had a death wish. Second, you want to control it and you /are/. You're completely pissed at me right now and look--" he grabbed Bruce's hand to lift it towards his face-- "not green. See that?" He dropped the scientist's hand and took a step back, spreading his arms out in invitation. "Go ahead and take a swing at me if it'll make you feel better too."

“you…you dont understand. I’m not mad at you, hell im never ******** mad at you. I’m mad at myself for letting you too close but im not mad at you. Thats part of the problem I cant get mad at you, but everyone else…I can still turn into some angry green monster and crush them. ” he prodded his finger at tonys stomach punctuating the word you.”You cant see clearly because you cant make me angry. but that doesn’t mean that i cant get angry, or that i can always control myself. Im going to mess up eventually and I dont want to hurt anyone.”
The innovator tipped his head challengingly. "Really? There's /nothing/ I can do to get you mad at me? How about I pull the plug on your project upstairs?" he suggested, placing his hands on his hips. "Trash the files, the data, wipe the harddrives, shred and burn anything you bothered to have non-digital. Would that make you angry at me?" It was purely a theoretical threat, but the insinuation should strike a nerve at least somewhat.

Bruce wanted to say yes, more than anything he wanted to get angry and had it been anyone else just the idea of doing something so annoying would have had them face to face with the other guy. But this wasn’t anyone it was tony, and if he was being honest with anyone let alone himself it wouldn’t make him angry. “no,” he said weakly “Frustrated, yes. but I’d understand you like the other guy and don’t want him to go away and you don’t understand why I’m doing this… if it was anyone else i would be beyond angry. But in your mind, everything you would be doing would be protecting a friend. I might not like the idea, hell i really hate the idea and if you do that ill just have to find some other lab to do the research in, but id understand why you did it and i couldn’t be mad.” Bruce stared at his shoes knowing that he was stupidly showing just how much he cared for the man before him. he didn’t know if it scared him more that Tony might figure it out, or the fact that he had let himself get there in the first place.”
Tony let out a loud sigh and ran his hand through his hair. He may not be doing a great job of getting Bruce angry at him, but he was managing to get angry at Bruce. "I just don't get it. Why the Hell should I be some kind of exception?" he gestured with his arms. "I piss plenty of people off..." Suddenly the man snapped his fingers. "Different approach. Imagine I'm someone else. Someone you can get mad at. Like Ross. You're mad at him, right?"

“now im sure you have a death wish. you don’t get it, I can’t get mad at you because he wont let me! He can’t get mad at you and neither can I, You’re the one thing we can agree on in the whole world besides the fact that we like purple. Even IF I got mad at you, which I CANT, so you should just stop trying. He would just stay where he is, because its you and neither of us WANT to hurt you, that doesn’t mean he cant though, it doesn’t mean that it couldn’t happen and so help me god if we hurt you, i have no doubts that he will let me kill myself.” Bruce said tears pouring out of his eyes, Tony just didnt get it… He couldnt let himself hurt him. He just couldnt…
Jesus Christ, he wished Banner would just lay one on him. A nice blackeye, maybe a fat lip. He deserved one for putting Bruce through the emotional ringer like this. "What if I said I wanted you to hurt me?" he asked then, giving the other scientist a hard stare, wondering where that would make the physicist's train of logic go.

“is this really that big of a joke to you?” Bruce asked stepping closer to tony and pushing his sholder backwards and into the other wall of the hallway. “let me clear this up for you, i am not going to hit you.” he said putting one hand one one side of tony “I dont want to hurt you” he said putting the other on the opposite side. “and the most rough i am ever going to get if i can help it, is pinning you against a wall.” he said eyes flashing green as he pressed tony into the wall. “now stop trying to make me kill you, because its not going to happen”
If he had some kind of internal meter for 'Hotness', the needle would have been pointing to 'Very' right about now. He almost didn't dare saying anything to prolong the moment. "It's not a joke..." he murmured, not needing to speak very loud for how close they currently were. "I just want to make you feel better. I thought getting some of your... aggressions out might do that..."

“you think that hitting you is going to make me feel better?” Bruce asked “you obviously are missing the point here… I don’t want to hurt you, everything i do is to AVOID hurting you. The only thing that could make me more stressed right now, is you pushing me so far that I do hurt you.” Bruce didn’t understand how tony could be so far off, why would he want to be hit? Why was he trying to break Bruce? If he was smart, he would walk away and never come back, just like everyone else. But tony was being Very Very dumb for such a smart person.
Tony let his eyes fall in submission. "Sorry," he mumbled. "I'm indulging my own inner demons," he recognized with a small nibble to his lower lip. "I shouldn't do that..." he said in a shaky breath. "M-maybe we should take a raincheck on that trip to the park."

Bruce suddenly realized that he hadn’t quite let tony away from the wall and stepped back to give the man some space. “yeah,” he said “later..or,” his voice lowered to be almost silent “never.” he ran his hand trough his hair willing himself to calm down. “you should stay away from me if you know whats good for you” he said staring at the floor, most of him hoping that tony would walk away but a small traitorous part of him wishing he would stay.
"What's good for me..." Tony gave a little snort under his breath. Yeah, whatever the Hell that was. He didn't even look back at Bruce as he walked off, already peeling his sport's jacket from his shoulders. First stop, his liquor cabinet. Second, the lab.

Bruce heard the footsteps walking away and felt his heart sink. He had finally done it, succeed in pushing tony away. He walked towards the stairs, he had some packing to do. He didn’t know where he was going to go, but it was probably better that he wasn’t here when Tony woke up.
Well, he could be thankful about one thing, at least. His decanter of scotch was plenty full from last time he'd stocked up. Tony skipped the tumbler glass and ice and took the bottle with him, removing the stopper to put the opening directly to his lips. The result was taking a much bigger drink than he'd meant, and he nearly choked but got it down with a wheeze. Okay, he needed to not drown himself, things weren't /that/ bad, he thought. The engineer took another swig, adjusting to the sting of the alcohol as he headed for the lab to get lost in work.

Bruce looked around his almost empty room, it had been nice to have a room for a while. Somewhere to call home, someone to come home to. But it was all just an illusion, He grabbed the few things he needed and shoved them into a bag. Taking one last look around he grabbed the picture that had been taken of the avengers, Clint had his arms wrapped possessively around Natasha, Thor stood with his arm on Caps shoulder who had his arm around Coulson in as close to a hug as Coulson allowed in public, And last but not least stood Bruce and Tony, a bit off to the side The engineer poking the Doctor in the side both of them with gigantic grins plastered on their faces. Bruce put the picture carefully in his bag, a reminder of the friends he once had and a warning that he should never let people in again. All that was left was to swing by the lab and pick up his research so that tony wouldn’t destroy it. Hopefully he already hadn’t Bruce turned and made his way down the stairs again running trough places in his mind where he could go that Tony wouldn’t be able to locate him.
If it was possible, he was already starting to feel the effects of the alcohol on his system, which was just fine with him. Dulled his senses and slowed his brain, which was pouring over years of childhood neglect and his attempts to gain his father's attention. Tony grumbled and let more scotch pour down his throat as he threw together a toolbox of wrenches and spare parts. Hell, he didn't even know what he was making, but he'd figure it out as he went. Anything to take his mind off things, that was what. He found a corner of the lab and got started, drinking all the while.

Bruce paused outside the door of the lab entertaining the idea that perhaps tony was inside a moment before deciding that he was probably not anywhere near as shaken up as he was and had just gone to bed. “JARVIS, Doctor Banner please open the lab door.” he requested moments before the door swung open. He was going to have to be quick he realized as Tony’s sleep schedule was erratic at best and he could be here any moment. Bruce didnt really care to have the ‘why are you running’ talk because he knew it was more than likely that he would either slip into some pathetic story about how he had run from his father as a child and had never stopped. Or worse, he would end up confessing that he loved Tony and that just couldn’t happen he had a hard enough time getting the guy to keep his distance as is, drop that bomb and there were sure to be a million questions to follow. He stepped into the lab determined look on his face and then stopped in his tracks. Tony.
"Ouch!" Tony yipped as he accidentally fumbled his soldering iron in his growing inebriated-clumsiness. He stuck his burnt finger in his mouth, willing away the lingering pain with a soft whine. He didn't even notice Banner as he came in, focused on the computer chip on the workbench-- or well, sort of focused, because his vision was getting blurry from the alcohol. Which also explained the fumbling and that he'd already burnt a couple holes unintentionally in the shirt Bruce had had him put on.

Bruce’s heart skipped a beat, Tony was always breathtaking but there was never a time that it effected him so much as this moment. The moment when he was choosing to walk away, the moment when he changed his mind and decided he could always leave in the morning as he watched Tony burn himself and put his finger in his mouth. Tony doing things like that should be illegal. He crossed the room putting his hand on Tony’s shoulder. “Now look, you’ve gone and ruined my favorite shirt.” He pulled the tool from Tony’s hand and hoisted him off the bench. “Come on, Bedtime.”
He jumped when Banner unexpectedly touched him, enough so that he knocked the lamp he'd been working under off the workbench. It made an awful din, but Tony just stared down at it a moment. "What are you... my mother?" he asked snidely, but nothing could describe his happiness at seeing the other man-- even though they'd been arguing only an hour or so before.

“gay best friend, mother, lab partener, Ill add it to my list of titles.” Bruce said grinning “now come on, dont make me drag you i am so not in the mood.” He tugged at tony trying to get him to his feet, “please tony, for me” he pouted.
Tony went, but not without snagging his half a decanter of scotch to bring with. "So does this mean you're going to tuck me in too?" he asked, wobbling on his feet a little bit and leaning on Bruce to support himself.

Bruce chuckled, “you know you’re pushing the whole mommy thing right hun.” wrapping his arm around tony’s waist and pulling him out of the lab. “jarvis closest room with a bed is…” he asked “Your’s sir” the AI responded with an ammused tone. “of course it is.” he mumbled “come on Tony We’re going to my room now.”
"Your room?" Tony mumbled in confusion. "Then where are you going to sleep...?" he formed the only semi-coherent question with a slur. He was expending a lot of his focus on putting one foot in front of the other, but his eyes managed to move over the bag on Bruce's shoulder and he put two and two together. "Bruce, you're not..." he started to try and pull away.

“If you go to sleep right now, ill be here when you wake up. And that is as good as you’re going to get.” He grabbed tony under the knees and picked him up noting how difficult it was for the man to walk while drunk. “now dont try to fight me now, you are so drunk that it would just be a one sided argument where i was laughing at you most of the time, I’m going to tuck you in and then go sleep on the couch got it?” he asked hoping that tony did.
The engineer made a surprised noise as he was suddenly swooped off his feet, bridal-style, but he didn't complain, rather settling his arms around the other scientist's neck. He was still loosely holding his bottle of scotch, but he rested his head on the crook of Bruce's clavicle. "You're strong..." he giggled, placated by his lab partner's promise.
