I think it was funny when Carmen was acting like she could handle herself in the "inner city" without their "tour guide" with her. She quickly changed her mind I noticed.
What is Bruno's problem. He didn't notice that everyone was looking at him and Carmen at the country bar; but he was so threatened by the people in that neighborhood. He's so convinced that racism doesn't exist and that black people look for racism but he doesn't see whats right in his face.

Dark_Lady_Jade Lupin The Great Dark_Lady_Jade Lupin The Great Dark_Lady_Jade The way the son acted really surprised me. It was unfortunate that he was acting more like a stereotype. I'm also glad that his parents made him return the watch. I hope I don't seem mean, but I thought it was funny toward the end when Bruno and Carmen (but Bruno was dressed in his black make up) were with that lady in that one part of town, and they got scared. xd Mean to who? (I think Bruno was more scared than carmen.) I hope I didn't seem by laughing at them being scared. Oh I don';t think they'll mind. blaugh xd I wonder what will happen next I mean all they seem to be doing is revealing themselves. sweatdrop

[Mmkay, so the antics in the last episode kind of bothered me... Nick? (Is that the black son's name?) He was very indifferent about the white kids, (who acted very much like 5 year olds and make me afraid to grow old under their care), saying "******." It's not the fact that he didn't care, just that he didn't seem to want to express why he didn't care. He had no opinion.
The only reason he tried to get the other kids to stop saying it at the dinner is because "daddy said so." Then his dad comes over to the table and yells at the white kids without even listening to what they are saying. He had an annoying kind of air about him, like: "this is how it is and there is no other way to look at it because I'm forty and you're 15."
The white kids [in the etiquette class] were annoying as ********, not because they said "******" freely, but because they kept using it again and again, like a toddler who discovers, "Hey, I AM allowed to say 'hell,' cuz it's in the Bible~! ZOMGz~!" and proceeds to say it everytime they get the chance. rolleyes
You could tell Nick was a little annoyed by them using it over and over again... So then, why is it that he can't voice that opinion, or tell those other kids that just because he doesn't particularly care about them using it, it's not a word that needs to be thrown into every sentence. It's as annoying as someone who says "********" every other word. evil ]

[And of course I have to comment on Bruno [white dad]. Whaaat...the...fuuuck...? "Black fathers often take off [abandon the mother of their children]?"
Says who?
How he went from seeming to understand to making hurtful general statements like that boggles the mind. evil
That's like saying hispanic/latino men often beat their wives. Or that white men often have affairs or are otherwise unfaithful.
Once he said that s**t, I think he lost whatever respect he had or may have had from the black musician he was trying to talk to. The guy seemed to just dismiss him as just another white guy who "doesn't get it."
YES, life IS what we make it. My 80-year-old great-grandmother says that all the time and she's seen and experienced racism as it was.
NO black person should blame white people as a whole for their own failures or incompetence, just as incapable white people can't blame black people as a whole (or affirmative action rolleyes ) for their misfortune or inability to obtain a position or entrance into a school, for example.
But, holy s**t...why he went off on a tangent like that, making such general statements, is beyond me. I guess he wanted to vent and make sure black people heard his views about "us," yet he couldn't have sounded more closed-minded, arrogant and foolish. confused And that's a shame. He sounded as thick-headed as 16-year-old Nick. mad ]

OMGWTF Bruno makes me want to punch the TV. What is his problem? Its not that he doesn't get it, I think he doesn't WANT to get it. He's not opening up his mind nor his eyes and shutting his mouth long enough to realize what the other side deals with on a day to day basis. He's so ignorant and such a jackass.
The son, Nick, makes me want to punch my brother because they look and act just alike. My brother is so blind to the world and chooses to take things so lightly just like Nick. They both need a wake up call.
Nick and Bruno need to spend some time together and get schooled on today's racism.

[I agree that they both need a wakeup call. 3nodding What sucks is, as you obviously know, there are a lot of other people in the world like them. There are people like Bruno who just want to rant and rave on and on about their views, peeves and philosophies, and yet they can't STFU long enough to actually hear and understand someone else's PoV. xp And there are people like Nick, who don't want to have to suffer like their parents did with racism, so they ignore it rather than standing up for themselves.... -sigh-]

I think Bruno should go into a neighborhood similar to his hometown as his black character to see how people react to him. Why does he only choose to be around blacks when he's in makeup? Does he think being black is like a secret society?

I kind of wish the black family was getting something out of this...So far it seems as though the only thing they get is the opportunity to reaffirm all the stereotypes about white people they had when they began.
But I guess that's what sucks about the whole thing. The white family gets to learn that it can be tough and different and interesting being black while the black family gets to learn that, well... racism still exists, etc. I mean, what has the black family really gotten out of this so far? Besides their feelings hurt by finding some of the ugly truths about how they are viewed by some white people...? confused ]

Based on what I've seen of the show, it seems to me that Bruno really only sees (or wants to see) the black community as a bunch of stereotypes.
Nick surprises me. I'm like him a little in that I don't care about every single little bitty thing in the whole world, but even I care about some things (there is no way I would have sat there and let those kids keep saying the N word). It's almost as if he just doesn't want to care. confused
My mom saw the most recent episode, and she agrees with me that Rose is very smart.

[Rose is very intelligent and mature for her age. 3nodding I think she has the most sense, the most willingness to learn and adapt, and also has the ability to see the big picture. She has yet to do or say something completely off-base, stupidly ignorant or completely embarrassing to herself or her family. 3nodding ]

What really impressed my mom about her was when she said something about how she'll never be black, no matter how much make up she puts on, and how she realizes there are certain things within the black community that no one else will ever understand. My mom had said that months ago, when they started showing the commercials for the show. My mom has a new found respect for Rose.

Besides their feelings hurt by finding some of the ugly truths about how they are viewed by some white people...? confused ] True...the black family didn't even need to sign up for the show and waste their time to see that blacks are still being treated with racism today. They knew that before they agreed to do the show. I think only Rose and Carmen are learning about the other side. They seem to be the only two who put themselves in situations where they will actually see and feel what blacks see and feel everyday. I don't even want to get on Bruno because that will mess up my day. Did you hear what he said when he was talking to the musician? He wanted to know what secret sucessful blacks had in order to overcome setreotypes and gain success. SECRET? WTF? Why does there have to be some hidden trick used? Blacks can't just have common sence and the same abilities as anyone else to gain success in life? Damn I had to go there...now I let his stupidity piss me off again.
