He laughed, trying to dispel the strange atmosphere that had descended. It was all too tense. "Yeah, I'm fine," he waved a hand, looking away. His eyes fell on his sketchbook, and he set it down on the table. "Here, would you like to look at some of my sketches? They aren't very good, mostly of birds and squirrels." He wanted desperately for the attention to not be on him. He opened the sketchbook to the first page, a set of sparrows, perched on a branch. "Here, you can just flip through it..." He sat back, staring at the book. He knew there was at least one drawing he wouldn't really want her to see, but since they were outing secrets... The sketch of his parents fighting seemed like an appropriate trade-off for seeing the girl turn into a cat.

She heard that Jerem said he was fine, but she wasn't entirely sure he was. She would've asked whether or not there was anything really bothering him. However, she wasn't going to force him to say anything if he didn't want to. As she looked through the pages, she thought about how Jerem said that his artwork wasn't good. She saw two people who appeared to be fighting. She didn't ask and quickly flipped passed the picture, not wanting to make Jerem uncomfortable by asking.
She kept flipping through the sketchbook, looking at the pictures and could've sworn that one of the pictures looked a bit like her. Her face blushed a bit, but tried to hide it as she closed the book and said, "These are really good. Why did you say that they aren't good?" She kept thinking of the picture of the girl the looked a lot like her as well as the picture of the two people fighting. She wondered who the two people were. She thought they could've just been random people, but she didn't know why Jerem would draw random people, seemingly fighting.

Turning the sketchbook toward himself again, he lowered his gaze. He tapped the hard cover with his fingertips. "I only took one drawing class. I taught myself everything else. The class helped me with shading, and how to add texture to drawings. When I was taking the class, there were people there, better artists, and young people who were just starting out. I was in the middle of it all, aspiring to be something I wasn't positively sure I wanted to be." He cleared his throat, opening the sketchbook at the beginning. He started flipping through the pages, just as she had done. "My mother was very proud, that I wanted to pursue something. She had always complained that I never got motivated to do anything." He stopped at a drawing early on, a portrait of a middle-aged woman with long dark hair that curled about her shoulders. Obviously... his mother. "She paid for my lesson, and was talking about sending me to more classes, if I wanted to," he continued flipping the pages, more birds, a squirrel digging a hole... Then the two adults fighting. "And then they started arguing." He lingered on that picture longer than Kiiro had, staring at it carefully. The expressions were faint, not as defined as the clenched fists and spread feet. "My father didn't think I needed to go into art. He said it was a pointless endeavor, that people who went into art rarely get to do what they really want. My mother thought I was wonderful at it, and that I should be allowed to continue taking lessons, getting better." He stopped, then turned the page. More nature scenes. "Their arguing didn't start because of me. That was just one of the many things they didn't agree on. I stopped drawing for a while, and when I picked it up again, it was always missing something..." He closed the sketchbook suddenly, looking over at Kiiro. He smiled a little. "My art isn't that good." he said simply, closing his eyes with his small smile. "By the way, how's your leg feeling?" Blatant subject change, yes. He didn't want to linger on his parents and drawing anymore..

Kiiro stood there and listened to Jerem, not interupting him. She never had anyone that would listen to her and she thought that she would listen to Jerem. As she listened to him she thought it was interesting how he took art classes. When he told her about there being better artists she doubted that. She knew there were better artists out there, but she liked Jerem's artwork. After hearing him say that when he was taking classes, she heard him say something about not being sure that he wanted to be. She didn't know why he wouldn't want to do something that's so great.
While she listened to him talking about how his mother wanted him to take art classes and in turn paid for him to go to them. Kiiro wasn't sure whether or not she wanted to interput him, so she just listened to him. She saw him stop on one picture in the sketchbook and wondered what it was. As she watched him flip through the pages again she wondered if there was something she should say. But there was nothing she could think of.
Kiiro was saddened when she heard that Jerem's parents argued and wished there was a way to make him feel better. She stood there, not saying anything since she didn't know if her opinion on what was being said was needed. She heard Jerem say that it wasn't his fault for his parents arguing, and even though she had no idea if that was true, she nodded at him in agreement.
Kiiro then heard mention of her leg and was a bit confused by the subject change, but she completely understood if Jerem was getting uncomfortable, then she said, "I guess that it's better now. It doesn't hurt when I put weight on it, since I'm standing right now. It may not be completely better, but it'll get there if I don't do anything to hurt it again."

Jerem smiled and nodded, scooping the sketchbook back into his messenger bag. He stood up. "Well, good. If it starts swelling, I think it you put something cold on it, it'll help it go down. Probably letting it soak in a cool stream would help relieve some pain, too." He readjusted his coat and stuffed his hands in his pockets. He glanced absently at the bobcat cubs--they had wrestled themselves to sleep. The momma-bobcat was watching over them, relaxing nearby. "I should probably get going home... It's getting late," He murmured, giving an embarrassed laugh and apologetic smile. "But I can come and visit you again tomorrow, if you'd like. I sure would like to."

Kiiro smiled at Jerem and said, "I'll be sure to do that if my leg starts bothering me again." She was really happy that she met Jerem because she had never imagined that there were really kind people in the world. She thought about them stauing friends and smiled at that thought. She saw it was getting a bit late and almost wondered how the day went by so fast when the days normally dragged out.
Kiiro then watched as Jerem fixed his jacket and put his hands in his pockets. Kiiro smiled as she watched Jerem looking at the bobcat kittens and their mother. After hearing that Jerem had to go home she frowned, but knew that he had to go. However, when she heard him say that he wanted to know if he could come back she smiled again. "Of course you can." She replied, smiling at Jerem.

Reluctantly, Jerem left. He lowered his head as he walked out of the house, though he had a smile on his face. He glanced over his shoulder and waved goodbye to Kiiro, then set off for home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, Jerem left his house fairly early. It was still morning, at least, but noon was fast approaching. All he wanted to do was go into the woods again, climb up that mountain, see Kiiro. He felt better out there; he didn't really like being at home. His parents were sure to start their fighting again soon enough. He didn't want to be there for that. So he marched through the trees, making a beeline for the cabin the catgirl lived in. This time he brought some snacks in his messenger bag, a few granola bars and crackers, and a couple of juice boxes. "Kiiro? Are you around?" he called as he stood outside of the cabin, waiting.
Kiiro was taking a cat nap and when she woke up she heard someone calling her name. She didn't know if it really was someone calling her name, until she recognized the voice. She sat up with a start and then immediately went and changed out of her pajamas. When she was finished with that she went, brushed her teeth and hair before practically running to the front door.
Once she got to the door she opened it so fast that she had to hold onto it or she would've fallen on her face. "Morning Jerem." She said in an excited voice. She normally didn't act so excited, but she was happy that Jerem had actually come back. She didn't think that he would lie about coming back, but she still had her fears about him not coming again.
The young man smiled, lifting a hand in greeting. He approached the catgirl, smiling brightly. "How's your leg feeling today? Better?" he asked, stopping just in front of her. "And I hope I didn't come by too early... Things were civil at home, and I wanted to leave before they stopped." He smiled a little nervously and gave a short laugh.
Kiiro smiled at Jerem and said, "My leg feels a lot better since I rested and haven't been trying to put too much weight on it." She then added after hearing Jerem ask if he had come to early, "You're fine. I just woke up from a nap. But it's ok." She giggled a bit and her thoughts burned with curiosity about what they would do to pass the time. Even though she dreaded the thought of having the time pass too quickly and then Jerem would have to leave again.
Jerem smiled, sitting down on the porch of Kiiro's cabin. He began by pulling out his sketchbook and pencils, just to have them nearby. "Did you sleep well?" he asked, glancing up at Kiiro. It was a short glance, hinted by a very faint blush. He looked around the forest as he waited for her answer, taking in the late morning atmosphere and scenery. Nice day.
Looking down at Jerem as he sat on the porch, Kiiro smiled. She noticed him blush a little as he glaced up at her while asking how she slept. She replied with, "I slept fine thanks. usually sleep deeper than I did, but I guess that I was excited that I was expecting company that I wasn't sleeping as deeply as I could have. Don't worry though." She then explained to Jerem how that normally when she slept it looked as if she were not going to wake up. But that was only due to the fact that she slept so peacefully and her breathing was so shallow that it was barely noticable. She also mentioned that her sleeping habits always frightened her mother and she always got a scolding for scaring her mother like that.
Kiiro noticed Jerem looking around at the scenery and then she said to him, "It's really beautiful here. Isn't it?" She could guess what his reply would be, but she asked anyways. She smiled at the trees and other plants. As well as the birds, squirrels and other small aniimals that were scurrying about.
The young man took his messenger bag off, setting it on the porch next to him. He leaned back on his hands, listening to Kiiro's story of her mother. He smiled. "She cared a lot," he said quietly. And then he nodded. "Yeah, it really is. I like it out here more than at home.." He fell silent after a moment, just watching nature at its finest. Then he looked at Kiiro. "So, what do you normally do throughout the day? Do you usually stalk hikers and fall out of trees?" He chuckled at his joke, sitting up as he spoke.
Kiiro was looking at the little animals that were scampering around when she heard Jerem. She looked at him, nodding before saying, "I know she did. She really was the only one who did care..." She sighed and looked at the sky, trying not to think too much of her mother at that moment because she knew if she did, she'd be swallowed up by grief. Hearing that Jerem liked it out here rather than at home, Kiiro was a bit confused. But remembered that Jerem didn't like being home because of his parents fighting.
Kiiro was watching an emerald and scarlet colored hummingbird buzzing from flower to flower when she heard Jerem ask what she did throughout the day. She stopped watching the hummingbird and then looked at Jerem replying, "I don't stalk hikers. I know I get curious sometimes, but I'd never stalk anyone. Even though it is sort of in my nature. And as to falling out of trees.... I don't really do that all too often..." She had an embarrassed expression on her face by the time she finished speaking. She then started telling Jerem abut how she usually stayed in her cat form because she enjoyed that more than being human. She told him that even if people did see her as a cat they would think that she was adorable and wouldn't try to hurt or harrass her for being different. Though she usually ran from people, she still sometimes like people hold her in her cat form. After she finished explaining to to Jerem most of what she did to pass the time, she turned into a cat and then started to pounce at a large monarch butterfly that was fluttering around.
"It must be nice," he commented idly, watching her pounce at butterflies, "to be able to just turn into an animal and not have to worry about anything. None of the problems that humans have would follow you there." He sounded wistful, and though he watched Kiiro, he didn't seem to really see her. Then, as though waking himself from daydreams, he shook his head and smiled. "So, is that what you do all day? Attack butterflies?" He chuckled, amused by her playing.
