"leaving so soon, realy? well, then I guess we'd better do it right. I would love a good prime rib, myself." he smiled broadly. "when you get a good buck, call me up. I'll make sure that I show up."

just then, the phone called. it was Jess.

when Vince answered it with a "hello?" she yelled loud enough for Katriel to hear from 3 feet away "where the hell are you? we've got customers! get back here A.S.A.P. and bring the new girl with you!" and then hung up.

Vince stood there a moment with his phone in his hand.

"uhhh... we should... head back now..." and he pointed.

"Oh, crud," Katriel muttered.

She'd been having such a good time talking that she'd completely lost track of the time. She took off sprinting, the dogs bounding behind her, and she didn't slow down. When she reached the shelter, she quickly returned the dogs to their kennels, where they gratefully flopped down on their beds, and rushed to the front office.

"Sorry I'm late, ma'am, but I was walking the dogs and got a little turned around," she reported.

Vince took off running behind her, but couldn't keep up. it took him a bit longer to get there.

Jess raised her head and gave a smile. her voice was a little loud, and she was both angry and relieved but she hid it well with a cheerful friendly tone.

"that's good, you're back. I'm writing up some adoption papers, please take care of the next customer in line."

there were two more families waiting, one of them standing by the register while their kids looked at the dogs.

when Vince finally made it back, he was panting and sweaty. he took a seat in the break room, and grabbed a paper cup of water.

"So, are you looking to adopt a dog today?" Katriel asked, not out of breath in the slightest. "Anyone in mind?"

She saw Vince come in, panting heavily. He was such a city boy--but at the same time, he was really nice. She hoped the next two weeks would be really good--she was ready for a break in her bad luck streak.

"yes, we were looking at that terrier, the one named Crash. we'll probably rename him, but he'd perfect for the kids." said the father, a bearded fat man with a bowler hat. his voice was a little gruff, but he didn't sound anywhere near as brittish as he looked.

Crush was a puppy still, and seemed a little bit hyper. but it seemed like he could entertain himself for hours with only his toys just as easily as with company. the little tag on his cage explained that he was the only surviving puppy of a litter found safely in a park where a tree fell and killed the mother.

Katriel brought Crush out for them and let them walk him around--he was very docile after their run earlier. And then she helped them fill out the paperwork. She accepted the adoption fee and the family took him home.

She looked over at Vince who was helping the other family. They seemed to be almost finished, as well. Then she looked at the clock and saw that it was almost 5!

Time flies when you have a job, she thought.

as Vince finished up the paperwork for the family and sent them on their way with their new adoption, he seemed to have a particularly happy look on his face. the smile he had was so much more energetic than any expression he'd had all day. it would seem that underneath his otherwise lazy demeanor, there was a passion he had for his work here.

he walked over to Katriel, still beaming. "we close up in about an hour. better just tidy up a bit more and keep an eye out for customers. you'll wanna talk to Jesse at closing about your schedual."

he hopped up on a table and began petting one of the kittens, holding her on his leg. she was a mottled brown and black with squinty eyes and the tiniest squeek of a mew.

"Right..." Katriel sighed. "Sounds like bearding the lion in her den, so to speak." She look at the kitten with a bit of a confused look on her face. She'd never "gotten" cats. The kitten was hardly a mouthful for hawk, A real cat--like the puma her clan had brushed with on occasion--would never submit to that sort of treatment, even as a kitten. Domestic animals could be so weird!

The rest of the day was quiet, following the pattern that Katriel knew was consistant no matter what job she had--famine, feast, and back to famine. Finally, the clock displayed closing time.

"Ok, here I go," Katriel muttered to herself. "I'll go talk to Jesse, now. Wish me luck!"

She found the boss-lady's office and hesitantly knocked on the door.

"Hi. I was just wondering...how I did today? I mean, do you want me to come back tomorrow or...ever?" she asked timidly. After all, this wasn't her territory, and these dogs (while friendly) weren't her pack. She didn't much like asking the alpha female for permission to stay, but she doubted the age old ritual of hierarchical combat would be well received.

Jesse was listening to her radio, drinking a soda when Katriel entered. she lowered the volume and sat up straighter, putting her feet off of her desk and back on the floor.

"you have some quirks, new girl, but you know how to get work done in a timely manner. plus, you're great with dogs. just let Vince handle the birds and rodents from now on, and I think you'll do fine."

she reached into her drawer and pulled out a time sheet.

"I want you here every day you can be. have any other busy days I should know about?"
PostPosted: Sun Apr 29, 2012 10:04 pm

"No--no my schedule is wide open for the next couple of weeks," Katriel replied, pleasantly surprised. "After that, I haven't made any plans yet. Um...this might be a bit of a fauxpas, but when's payday? My truck is broken down and I need to fix it--I'm running errands on my homemade motor-bike, but, you know, gas prices and all."

Jess stared at Katriel sternly for maybe a full minute before she spoke.

"well... normally, payday arrives every week, with the first paycheck two weeks after starting. but tell ya what -- I'll pay you for the day right now, and resume regular pay afterwards."

she opened her checkbook and wrote out the number. it was minimum wage, but still turned out to be a decent amount for a single day.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 29, 2012 10:36 pm

"Thank you so much!" Katriel gushed as she accepted the check. It was definitely enough to get the pups some ribs or t-bones. "I really appreciate this. You have no idea! I'll see you tomorrow morning, bright and early."

She ran out of Jesse's office almost bouncing with excitement, holding the check as if she was a puppy with her first squirrel kill.

"I'm off to the bank and then to the butcher!" she announced to Vince. Then she paused. "Is there a real butcher in this town? Not just a minimum-wage lackey behind the meat counter at the supermarket, but someone who can point out the sirloin on a picture of a cow?"

Vince didn't realy know the answer, but he knew where to start. still hoisting his packpack, he said "if you go to the community plaza, you can ask someone there before open-air market closes."

it didn't occur to him that she could probably find that butcher at that very market.

"Excellent," she said, stuffing the check in her back pocket. "Let's go. Need a lift on my motored bike?"

looking around for what reason even he didn't know, Vince shrugged and smirked.

"sounds good. thanks." he tightened the shoulderstraps and follwed Katriel out.
