"Yeah, I'm not actually sure how I survived my childhood," Jordan said, a little sheepishly. "Never actually tried catching any snakes, looking for them was plenty stupid enough for us. Actually did see a rattler once. We kept well away from it. Most of the snakes around where we lived aren't poisonous, but rattlers can kill you if you're dumb enough to bug them. But they'd rather get away than bite if they can, so as long as you stay out of their way you're usually okay."
He nodded. "It gets better," he said sympathetically. "Heck, my group wasn't cleared for external missions till right before I got my promotion, so I know what you mean. Boredom was half the reason I got into the habit of doing extensive exercises daily. And I read a lot."

It was impossible not to shiver, hugging himself at the idea of finding any snakes. "Shiit man. I'd have run a mile even seeing a snake, rattler or not. Hate the things. ******** creepy. Like in that lair I ended up in the ******** snake room. " he winced "About the only time Tracey's ever come in handy. I didn't like snakes before, now its like good ******** god take it away." He hoped there weren't any on the island, that'd be a bit of a blow to his masculinity running a mile from a random snake. He'd never admit to anyone he still checked his clothes and shoes for snakes and bugs before he dressed here, he'd heard stories about tropical place.
"Ah ******** hell. I'm going to get ******** cabin fever if I'm stuck here till I'm promoted. I train all the time, but even then there's only certain times I can use the gym. There's a lot of people who go there that I don't get along with, not to mention the ******** hassle that is trying to bathe lately. ******** tyranny of women running the place. Never was any good at reading myself, I can just about get through mission briefings without being bored. Not much more than that. Always seems dead stuffy and s**t in books."

"Ugh, I wasn't thinking about that." Jordan shuddered, hunching in on himself momentarily as he shoved the memory and the dream back again. Ferros stirred, rumbling protectively; soothing the weapon helped him settle back again, the dream receding. "I can stop talking about snakes now, no problem at all with that."
"I'll be glad when the bathroom's fixed," he agreed, not commenting on the problem of the gym or the reason the bathroom was destroyed in the first place. "I don't mind showering late at night, but I prefer when the place is empty, and not being able to shower after my morning run makes me kind of twitchy."
"Hey, there's plenty of books that aren't stuffy and boring," he protested. Then he paused. "You wouldn't know it from the library here, though. Hm. Hey, I'll make you a bet. I bet you I can find you a book you'll like reading." He grinned.

Snakes.>
He had not a clue what the angel meant, having actually forgotten he was even still awake and as such tried to ignore him all over again.
"Yeah, it'll be ******** nice. Really nice. I /really/ don't like showering with other people. At all. It was why the place got ******** wrecked to begin with. Jerry was there and it got.." he waved a hand vaguely "..tense. And then it just went wrong. ******** regret it though now. The sea isn't good. Nor are buckets of hot water either. " he let out a slightly forlorn sigh "Made my bed, have to sleep in it I guess, just a shame other people got dragged into it cause of that."
A faint smirk tugged at his features. "A bet? Well I don't normally take impossible gambles but I could take this one. You find me a book that I like, you win. What's the stakes though? I don't have two pennies to rub together."

"Sparring is best done in non-enclosed spaces. Especially when explosive types are involved. Weapons and personalities both included under the explosive thing." Jordan grinned. He was certain that the incident had been provoked by Rep, but Rep had already learned from it; no need to scold and get him irritated about it again. And it had probably been quite the incident.
He stretched his legs out again and crossed his ankles. "Well, since you can't bet money yet, the usual substitute stakes are taking on some of the other guy's duties. Hmmm, I kind of hate dishwashing, but that's not really an option till the kitchen's fixed. .. Then again, it might take a while before I can get out somewhere, so I guess it'll do. What's your stake going to be?"

"Yeah. I didn't know he was going to pull out a bazooka. So I kind of had it coming I guess." he held his hand up "I do admit I started it. I tried to get him to piss off by threatening him. And then he touched my jacket. I just.. sort of.. flipped at naked man touching my jacket. When I was already strung out /enough/ at being caught out by anyone even being there at that time of night. I may possibly have panicked." he nodded "At least I know now you don't underestimate people on this island, even if they look weak."
One of his cheshire cat smiled curved onto his features. "I think I'd bet that if I win, you take me shopping, your treat. I can't get solo clearance off island, but I can tag along with an intermediate. And you get wages right? If you win I'll do whatever duties you need covered, dish washing or whatever" He was determined not to lose. Washing dishes was demeaning. It'd need to be one hell of a book.

Jordan's mouth quirked in a smile. "Everyone here got through the evaluation process and bonded with a weapon; there's some baseline strength in that, at least," he said. "Even if there are, uh, individual issues."
"Letting me off easy, huh?" He laughed. "I can agree to that. How many chances do I get for this?"

"True, though I have no idea what the criteria for weapon bonding even is. Like.. did Tracey pick me for any reason other than he likes to make fun of me like ******** crazy in my head?"
< Yes, I like lost causes.> he glared at the wall for this, able to hear the smirk in the angel's voice.
"He says it is but I don't know if he's just trying to wind me up some more. I guess its something we just have to guess at. Makes us stronger in the end."
He laughed though, not able to help it. " Oh I don't know, its not that easy man. I have an enormous shopping list of s**t I'd like to buy." He poked him in the shoulder teasingly, confidence returning at the idea of a bet he though he was sure to win "So yeah, as many chances as you have wages and time off. Or in a more unlikely case, as many duties as you are booked for."

"Ferros once said that he chose me for my determination." Jordan shrugged. "Worked out well enough. I really wonder about some pairs, though."
Also, you're funny when you flail.
Jordan ignored that comment. "Not like I'm doing much else with the money," he said. He grinned at Rep's confident tone. "Okay, you had your chance to limit it," he said, and offered his hand for a handshake. "Bet's on."

"Pfft. So confident. Like I said, I don't read much. You've likely just committed yourself to a lifetime of being my personal cash machine. Notta bad deal. I have expensive tastes and I tend to ******** break stuff around here. They don't go well towards wages."
He took the offered hand and gave it a shake. "Deal." Releasing him to look smug. "It'd take a damn good book to get me into a kitchen."

"I'd better find a damn good book then, huh?" Jordan grinned slyly. "I've - " He was interrupted by a sudden, unexpected yawn. "Whoa. Scuse me. Damn lack of sleep." He ran a hand through his hair and leaned his head back against the wall. Getting up was going to take effort.

He could only nod. "Better put effort in. I'm hard to please, disce..discer..picky tastes."
He looked sympathetic as the other man yawned, but almost, for a moment, panicked. A sharp twinge of fear temporarily overrode his giddy good feelings. For /just/ a moment an utterly insane suggestion surfaced. Utterly insane. He shoved it aside. "No need to apologise man. I mean. I think the only reason I've not been yawning the whole time is cause like..I've found some weird ******** place here way beyoooooond tired. Where yawns are a fond ******** memory"

"Discerning? I'm sure I can find something." Jordan gave some thought to getting up and going back to his room, and found the dream fluttering around the edges of his recollection. "Don't really feel like going back to sleep yet. Just gonna start dreaming again," he admitted.
Maybe he'd just close his eyes for a minute. It wasn't like he was going to fall asleep with the light on.

"Yeah. That's the word. I'm..not exactly great at words." he eyed the ceiling lazily. "And yeah, its no worries man. I've got time to kill anyway. A lot of time to kill, there's no hurry or anything." It wasn't a lie, the prospect of going back to the quiet room wasn't a very appealing one he had to admit.
He lapsed into silence for just a moment, surprised it wasn't actually awkward to do so.
"Maybe you'll dream about your impending poverty instead dude." he stated with a smirk as he leaned his head back against the wall with a lazy sigh. "I need posters for in here. Decor. Its so plain."

Not falling asleep. Nope ...
Ferros was laughing at him again, but that was nothing particularly unusual.
The quiet stretched longer; the next time Rep looked over, he would find that the not-falling-asleep mantra had been completely ineffective, and Jordan's eyes were closed, his expression oddly peaceful.
