The Jungle Course

rolling 1d100 ( -10 )

Chuppi was tired by the time her friends arrived, all of them together. She wanted badly to show them the flags she'd obtained for them but it was no use - she was ushered off onto another course before she could even say anything. The end result was her going into what looked like a jungle, a place so dense and thick she was terrified just looking at it.

"I...have to go through there?" Asking the Lepus guide was a moot point as it spewed off some random nonsense and Chuppi shuddered when she started walking into the humid and foggy area. Part of her wished she'd taken the easy challenge of the field again, passing it once before with three flags had been nice, but somehow she'd ended up in the jungle.

Then, just as suddenly, she was surrounded by wild animals. Or at least a wild animal's den. The chupacabra shuddered and tried to pick up her pace, hoping to get out, but found herself hidden deeply in the brush. It made her scared to get lost like this, her legs and back hurting, and the monster rubbed at her eyes in an effort not to cry.

"Come on, I'll take you back little one." A heavy voice and a gentle hand came down on Chuppi's shoulder, and she turned to see a bogeyman standing there. He was tall and somewhat smiling, and when his hand left her shoulder he extended it down for her to take. "We'll get your wounds looked at too, so don't worry. Your friends will be along shortly."

The words sounded ominous but Chuppi didn't care, and she took the hand that was offered and started walking from the jungle. She didn't get any flags this time, but would they be proud of her still?

Yin was not happy. Not happy in the least. And he was glaring not only daggers at the lepus guide but probably any other weapon imaginable as well. He was perfectly fine. Again. He had tried to listen to his guide. He had went with the wolf because the guide had clearly said wolf.

And now he was in the infirmary with the tiniest bandage imaginable on his arm and absolutely no flags to show for either of his course attempts. He was failing his team. He first noticed Mademoiselle Temes being brought in and he waved at her, glad that she would soon be getting the medical attention that she needed.

Then a boogeyman came in, cradleing...leg bones? Yin was halfway to the entrance as the next two boogeymen came in, hauling the limp and broken body of Alexander between them. The boogeyman with the leg got between them though. "Let them get him settled in before you harass him kid. He's got some serious mending to do." But as soon as he was allowed he was at his side. He ignored all chairs and stools, instead perching precariously on the edge of his bed. What about this situation could anyone consider being "fine"?

Alex may have blacked out again. Or maybe he had just closed his eyes and refused to open them. Though if there was one thing that could be said for an undead, it was that they were resilient, and even after a fall like that? Ya, Alex somehow managed to peek those eyes open, see Yin sitting on the edge of the cot next to him, and give him a weak smile. When he had fallen, he had been more concerned about losing his head then his leg, and so had ducked his head and held on to it with blocked arms. The result was that, while most of his body from the shoulders down was quite broken, at least...well, he could still smile.

Even if he couldn't move. Again. Must have snapped several bones in his body...

There were deep gashes all over him as well, from the sharp rocks that had gouged at him as he tumbled down the cliff side. These were slowly leaking a thick, darkened blood. Some fear healers made their way over to attend to him, working on the worst of the wounds first then making their way to the less immediately threatening ones. Somewhere in the room, he could hear somebody shouting. "We don't have all the peices! Get back to the bottom of that cliff and find the rest!"

Ohhhh, was that his leg they were yelling about? He winced, really hoping they found all of the bones. And that they new how to put them back together properly.

Finally as the healers moved off, leaving Alex's bones to mend, he felt like it was safe to speak. "You're okay!" He said, trying to sound cheerful. Alex's lepus guide was suddenly there, with the flags that Alex had managed to capture in hand.

"Did you know that there are 206 bones in the humanoid body? Did you know that you currently only have 180? Did you know that they are missing 9 pieces of your foot bone? Did you know that?"

Very reassuring.

Yin tried to stay out of the Fear healers way, but he refused to leave. In fact, he helped where he could, using every scrap of knowledge he could remember from first aid on the zomboil and trying not to look utterly devastated. And for some reason the Fear healers did not even try to make him leave, though they did have him move when necessary. At one point his lepus guide started to pipe up from his backpack and he threw the creature across the room. Obviously he was highly concerned for the creature's health.

Finally he had to leave. He could not stay by his bonded's side if pieces of his body were scattered at the bottom of some cliff. But a boogeyman stopped him, saying he was not allowed to go back out onto a course, no matter how much Yin argued with him and tried to get out the entrance. Furious he stalked back to where the Fear healers were finishing with Alexander, shoulders sagging unintentionally as he neared. It should not be like this.

Alexander sounded almost cheerful, but it really just made Yin feel more atrocious. Yes, he was okay. He was perfectly okay. Why could Alexander not have his guide that stopped him before things ever actually happened?

What he would not give to have taken Alexander's place at that moment.

He was also sorely tempted to also throw Alexander's guide across the room.

"Yes I am," he said, trying to smile. He had promised Lady Van Rotte that he would look after Alexander, and look where that had gotten him. Perching next to him on a cot where even after the Fear healers had come and gone, multiple Fear healers, he was still not well enough to move. "If you require anything. Anything at all. Let me know." He had not taken care of him up until now, but he could and would do anything possible to make that up. Hesitantly he reached out and pushed back the lock of Alexander's hair that was forever trying to get in his eye. These trials...they had been a mistake.

THE CAVE OF DARKNESS

To see Chuppi look so tired tug at what few heartstrings Mort had left in his body, but there was no time to exchange words. His lepus guide, which looked no worse for the wear despite the punt, happily (freakishly even) went back into the zomboil's backpack, ready for another adventure. The humidity was cloying, reminding him of a wetter version of the beach without a sun - the open courses were not appealing, and it looked as though Alex had already gone off to try raising himself out of the fog through fock climbing.

Maybe if he went downwards . . . But not into that cave again, oh no. He wasn't getting blown just anywhere this time. Mort re-shouldered his backpack and shambled forth into the next one he saw, quite the opposite of the Fire Cave: within, pure darkness.

Far better than fire.

Mort found, however, that his shoes kept catching on unknown obstacles, making him stumble more and more. His feet protested each time, still sensitive from the walking-on-fire-bare-foot experience not fifteen minutes ago, but he soldiered on, because maybe, maybe, he could do something right.

But "Mort" and "doing something right" wasn't a common occurrence in these trials, if one that happened at all. One final trip was all it took before he heard something whoosh in the darkness. Something suddenly covered him and forced him to the ground - rope? a net? - dragging him onwards to who knew where. It was like the Hunters' capture nets all over again, only worse in that he had no idea where he was going, what he had triggered, or -

Shnnk!

Oh. Well. Now there was a pointy thing in him. Multiple pointy things in him. Mort was pretty sure he blacked out seconds before it happened, but who could really tell in that infinite darkness?

The zomboil awakened once again in the infirmary beside his teammates, now covered in many new stitches along with his shirt-less ness. He simply laid there, eyes blankly staring up at the top of the tent, boring into them like maybe there was something there that could give him a sign of what he was doing wrong.

Long Grass Field

Upon returning to the starting point, Taryn immediately threw her arms around Chuppi. The poor thing hadn't had a very good time of this. She'd murmured reassuring phrases, praised the ghoul, and then had to run off to her own trial. Her clothes adhered to her skin, and she was slick with sweat in moments. This... wasn't good. There had been no excuse to fall into a pit of spikes, though... now there was.

"Did you know that there are 899 species of ticks known today?"

"Thanks." The ghoul stepped over the threshold and into the tall grass as it batted lazily at her legs. Almost immediately she tumbled forward, and her lepus gave a yelp.

"DID YOU KNOW THAT I DO NOT WANT TO DIE--!"

Taryn hit the ground and caught herself with both arms, giving a soft "oof". There had indeed been a brief moment of terror, but here they were, in the dirt with skinned elbows.

"Again," Taryn smirked, snatched the flag just before her eyes. She stood and brushed herself off, taking a deep breath and jogging on, keeping a good eye on the ground.

"Did you know that--"

"Did you know that my favorite color is green? And that you are also green albeit slightly annoying."

"Did you know that I did not?"

"I did."

Alex was grateful that Yin hadn't left him when the fear healers were going about their work on him. Some of the gashes in his body were really too deep to properly heal, and they had had to strip off his shirt, though it was still somewhat usable and he planned on putting it back on later, to stitch up a long cut that ran from the bottom of his ribs into a jagged line down and across his stomach.

It was not a very pleasant sight, really.

When Yin got up to leave, Alex wanted to reach out to stop him, but couldn't quite move yet, his body refusing to co-operate. So he just looked desperately after the weremantis, actually happy that he had been refused the departure that he so desperately wanted. He didn't know that Yin was wanting to go and help find the pieces of his leg that were still scattered below the cliff. He actually sort of just felt like Yin couldn't stand to look at him anymore, which hurt quite a bit more then any of the broken parts of his body.

And then Yin came back to his side and everything was alright again, and he could at least be thankful that it was him lying on the bed and not the weremantis. He would much rather be the one taking the near fatal injuries, thank you!

Slowly the bones in his body began to mend, and when he tilted his head to the side he could see that a boogeyman was coming back in the tent and muttering something about thinking to have found everything now, and how skeletal beings shouldn't be allowed to do the rock climb. Well, that sounded somewhat hopeful at least.

"Well, I'd ask you to make sure that they're putting my leg back together properly, but I don't suppose you know much about the 26 different foot bones and their placement." He tried to joke, even laughing a little. He couldn't exactly move around to see his surroundings properly, so he asked.

"How is the rest of the team doing?" And tried to ignore how worried the weremantis still looked. He was going to be fine, there was no need to worry! Oh look, they were bringing his leg over now!

Chuppi didn't even notice anyone else was there, her attentions on the doctor or whoever it was that was wrapping her legs with some kind of gauze. Her dress had been taken off and they were treating her back as well, apparently having been torn up enough that merited a good chunk of attention. The three flags from her first event stayed tightly in her grasp, her hands squeezed together to the point her palms were bleeding from her claws.

She'd done horrible and had let everyone down again, and a faint sniffle escaped from her lips. A few hot tears splashed down her face as she silently cried and, to her dismay, her Lepus guide took one look at her and then bounded off somewhere. It was going towards were the others were, eyes wide and annoying as ever.

"DIDJA KNOW SHE'S OVER THERE CRYING? DIDJA KNOW SHE GOT LOST TOO?"

Chuppi suddenly felt like killing and eating the Lepus.

"Woop!"

Maybe jogging hadn't been the best idea. Taryn suddenly found herself nearly knee-deep in muck, and she wrinkled her nose. Alright, this was... uh, well. She wasn't dead, and her team needed her. The ghoul continued on with mushy schlup, schlups.

Slowly, the ground began to firm. Taryn gave a triumphant laugh and began to shake off her mud-caked legs. It was Abigail's set of eyes that caught the sudden movements in the green stalks around them. Taryn's head snapped to the side in time to see her tail arch back and flash its fangs. The violet creature in the grass reacted by striking and then slipped quietly away. Abigail coiled around Taryn's arm, leaving behind a small smear of deep red blood. Damn. She plucked the flag from the ground where the beasts had been lying and continued on.

This was much better than Day 1.

They barely saw it coming. The lepus guide shrieked like a little girl and Taryn felt a pair of fangs fit to pierce her body cavity forced through her neck, and barely managed a strangled gasp before she blinked her way back into consciousness in the infirmary. She threw her flags in frustration and clapped her hands over her eyes. Damn it all!

She hadn't noticed that her ream was there to greet her.

"DIDJA KNOW I ALMOST DIED?" squeaked Mort's lepus guide as it tumbled in, looking for the nearest person to cling to. Yin satisfied the condition, and the boil would soon find a new addition clinging to his leg. "DID YOU KNOW THAT'S WORSE THAN CRYING AND GETTING LOST?!"

Mort remained still and quiet in his cot, just . . . listening. He didn't feel like moving yet, even when he heard someone else being brought in. Staring. Staring into forever at the top of the tent. Hearing Chuppi cry and yet staring into nothing. Hearing Yin and Alex comfort each other and still staring into nothing.

He also heard flags clutter to the floor and a growl, and probably would've joined in. If, y'know, he had something to throw. Like an actual, bona fide flag.

"Didja know I hate ya so much? Didja know at least mah person's useful? Didja know didja know?" It looked like the Lepus was out for blood, out for being snarky, and Chuppi shuffled from where she'd been sitting over to get her guide. Her steps were slow, she was tired and everything ached. The wraps on her legs and around her torso were nothing pretty, and blood was still somewhat seeping through. Walking hurt.

"Is...everyone okay? From before, I was so...worried..." Chuppi collapsed to the ground, not wanting to walk or move anymore. "So...tired."

"Didja know WE'RE ACTUALLY MADE OF STUFFING?" yelled the lepus back angrily, still clinging onto Yin's leg. "Didja know we're all just puppets?"

Chuppi's response was met with a groan from Mort's cot. The smell of blood was not helping; it made him hungry want to latch onto something and just . . . just vent out everything ever by taking the head of and nomming on some brains.
