Listening to Luke's words, Asch's anger started to build up again. "You don't understand! Do you really think its that simple?!" He had to pause for a moment in his limping to rest for a moment as his head started pounding once more.

When he spoke again it was calmer and more melancholy. "I did come back once. That's when I found out about you. That you had replaced me."

The memories were painfully overwhelming and caused his words to trail off into silence. He didnt really want to talk about this.

Luke paused with Asch for the moment's respite, catching his breath in slow, even draws. There was still a ways to go, and there was no point in getting tired already. Sensing the effect Asch's building ire had on his physical condition, Luke kept a low volume and a steady, passive tone. He hadn't brought it up to argue, after all, and he hadn't brought it up to piss off his brother needlessly.

"Did you speak to Mother and Father when you came back? Did they tell you you'd been replaced and send you away?" He trained his gaze into the inky darkness ahead, his expression almost lethargic. "I didn't 'replace' anyone. I just got tacked on as a cheap substitute. They probably would have just sent me back to wherever I came from if you'd shown them you were alive." But damn was this ever depressing.

Asch was silent for several moments. Obviously he hadn't done that. He had been too afraid, too shocked and grief stricken, thinking they didn't care anymore. At the time Van's words had made sense and were so inviting. Asch had believed and trusted him despite everything that had happened. He was just a kid then.

"What does it matter anymore? I can't go back now. They don't need to know what I've become." It would only grieve his parents to know that their son was now a criminal.

"You don't have to tell them." Not that Luke distinctly encouraged this whole life of crime deal, but he doubted his parents would pry further than Asch allowed. "It's not like I can force you to go back or anything, though... I just think it would make them happy to know you're all right." Even if it meant Luke losing his place - though apparently it wasn't his place to begin with. Knowing that, it seemed only natural to set things right.

But Asch didn't say anything. Instead his head started to slump and his grip was loosening on Luke's shoulder. His eyelids drooped and knees buckled as Asch felt himself starting to slip out of consciousness. Luke would feel his brother's weight on him more as Asch leaned against him.

"Zrak!" Saber barked suddenly as he noticed his master's deteriorating condition.

He felt the slouching weight in his grip and knew the situation was growing dire before the Zoroark's alarm alerted the same. "Hey, come on!" He jostled his brother in an attempt to rouse him, "It's not that much further!"

Luke's shaking seemed to do the trick as Asch started to come around again. Jolted back into reality and blinking his eyes to better focus. He merely grunted to his twin's words and regained his grip on Luke's shoulder as he started his hobbling once again. Hopefully it was as he said and wasn't too much further. Although Asch didn't admit to it, he wasn't sure how much longer he could keep this up. But he wasn't about to give up quite yet.

Saber twitched an ear, relieved that his master was still with them at the moment, but still very concerned.

Luke allowed himself to indulge in only a slight sense of relief. They weren't out of the woods yet, and the task of putting one put in front of the other clearly wasn't enough to sustain Asch's consciousness anymore. Some kind of conversation would probably help, but what was he supposed to talk about that wasn't all questions or wouldn't just make one of them angry?

"...Hey, do you know that song? The one Mother always sang?" He gave voice to the first verse of it in demonstration. It wasn't really the sort of situation he had room to be embarrassed in, and he couldn't think of anything else to say.

Did he know that song? Of course he knew it. He was about to say so when Luke actually started singing it. Asch experienced a feeling of nostalgia he hadn't felt in some time. It made him think of home, and everything he missed. So much so, it was too much for him.

"Stop it..." he said slowly. He didn't want to hear it anymore. It hurt too much.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 08, 2012 5:00 pm

Luke frowned. "Sorry. Just trying to keep you at least marginally aware here... It's not like I can carry you the rest of the way if you up and stop walking." He could talk about their surroundings, he supposed. Ooh, look how dark it is. And oh-- Rocks. Rocks and dirt. Truly fascinating.

The uppermost layer of ground softened only slightly, and the scent of damp earth accompanied the shift. They really weren't much further, it seemed, and the conclusion steeled Luke's resolve. Only a little further. Only a little further...

Asch's reply was only a softly heaved sigh, since doing much more than that would just cause agony due to his ribs. He was silent for several moments, feeling the change in the floor from hard rock to softer soil that would likely become mud as they approached water. He thought he could even hear the sound of a river.

Eventually he did speak up. His voice low and wistful. "How is mother?"

Thoughts of his mother were always a bittersweet amalgam of nostalgia and guilt. "She's doing well," he replied. "She worries a lot over little things," and big things too, "but I guess you probably know that as well as me." The gentle melody of running water mingled with his words, and the reflection of sunlight from further on shed a dim light into the tunnel.

Asch nodded as he was told that their mother was doing well. That was good to hear at least. Her health had always been rather poor. He did, in fact, knew how she tended to worry. That was part of the reason why he didn't want to show himself to his family. Probably best to let them think he was dead, as they always had, rather than make her worry about him all the time.

He then squinted as a few rays of light became visible, glittering off the surface of the cavern's river. However, he couldn't help but frown.

"This is your way out?"

How were they going to accomplish this? There was no way he could swim when he could hardly walk with Luke's aide.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 08, 2012 5:53 pm

A nod, "Yeah." He raised his free arm to point to the cave's opening but quickly recoiled from the cruel reminder of his injury. "It's not that far out, right? Leste should be able to carry us if it's only a little ways." Carrying two for the sharp ascent out of the pit proper would have been beyond the Pidgeot's capabilities, but if it was only to the safe land on the other side of the river, Luke was certain she would manage. Or he hoped she would manage - there just wasn't room for any less.

Asch nodded, having no idea what this "Leste" was. He assumed it was a Pokemon, but he wasn't exactly familiar with Luke's line up. He could only hope that Leste would be able to deliver. Since they would be crossing this river, it was probably best that he put Saber away.

The Zoroark soon disappeared in a flash of light, much to the dark type's dismay. He didn't want his master to be out of his sight when he was in such a bad shape! But he had no choice in the matter now.
