Pierre stopped short and leaned against a tree, waiting. "They were making sure I was turning you for the right reasons," he said simply. He closed his eyes and meditated, concentrating on filling the clearing with his scent to attract his prey. He tried to clear his mind, but couldn't help thinking of Jamie's soft, warm lips. His thoughts lingered on how he had felt her tense at first, and then relax into it. He thought of her small smiles and intoxicating scent... He began to get hungry.

He clenched his jaw and tried a little harder to remain still and blank. He flet her move beside him; his lips tingled and he longed to reach out to her. Why not? We're all alone. We can do whatever we want out here. And even if someone sees, she is already approved to be turned. It would be as if I had another vampire in my company. He scolded himself for such thoughts. She's just an innocent girl. Patience and propriety is the key.

He heard an animal move in the distance and smiled to himself, stepping out of the shadows slowly. He tilted his face up toward the moon, letting it bathe him in a pearly glow. He unleashed his full power, making himself irresistable to any living thing. Won't be long now, he said to himself, catching the scent of the bear. A sudden thought struck him. He hoped Jamie wasn't looking at him; he forgot to tell her to close her eyes. He dare not do it now - he'd scare off his meal. Besides, if she was already watching, there was very little he could do to stop her now.

Jamie bit her lip as his scent embraced every stem of grass, every leaf and every petal. She watched him as he faced the moon, bathing in the moonlight. He looked like an angel, even though she knew well that the comparison was ironic. He was perfect in so many ways and she felt honored to be able to know him - or even exist in his presence. She discarded her degrading thoughts and pursed her lips together, wondering if he ever thought back on the kiss. It was her first kiss and she was enthused to have shared it with him. As he stood there, she felt the need to touch him. Just to make sure he's real and that this, and the morning before, was not a dream. He was immensely attractive, in any light, but it was his eyes and whatever laid buried behind them that Jamie was drawn to.

She watched him tentatively until a black bear emerged from the darkness of the forest. It was a young female bear and her coat shimmered in the moonlight. Her eyes were a soft brown and she made soft submissive sounds in her throat as she approached Pierre. Her muzzle found his chest and she nibbled at his shirt. Jamie couldn't help but smile at the sight, but tried her best not to get attached to the animal as she knew what was going to happen next. She was nothing but food...
The thought spawned a controversy within her and she already began to feel sympathetic towards the bear.

The ground shook, causing Jamie to stumble, disorientated. An unearthly sound erupted from the woods beyond. The bear tilted her head back and moaned in protest.

"Pierre, watch out!" An enormous black bear stormed onto him, throwing his weight at Pierre with every slash while balancing on its hind legs. Its paws were gigantic, and lashed out at Pierre, intending to kill. Jamie gasped in horror, even though she knew he was going to be all right. She took the bear to be the female's mate. Perhaps he thought Pierre was the challenge. These fights were usually to the dead. Or maybe it was the female's older brother or father... Either way, Pierre would have double the amount he set out for to restock his blood storage. She thought about that for a moment - soon she'll have her own storage to restock. She made a mental note to ask Pierre what tasted better.

A rock hit the enraged bear, solidly, on his temple. It staggered a little, examining the area for his new foe and fixed its eyes on her. She braced herself, with a sharper rock in her one hand and a branch in the other. Her plan seemed so ridiculous now and she wished she never did it, but there was no way out now.
I guess I have the tenacity to attract trouble, she mused. She wasn't really in the mood to take anything too serious right now, so she jumped out of the bear's way and attempted to stab it in the shoulder with the branch. It only splintered, so the rock was next. The bear roared and opened its jaws in her face. She thrust the rock-knife into his palate with all her might. The beast moaned as the odd weapon pierced in deep. It retracted from her, making a lot of noise as it did so. Jamie sighed with relief. She knew Pierre wasn't going to be happy, but she was proud of herself anyway. If she had a proper weapon, she could have killed the bear. Even if he was going to be cross with her, she proved something to herself at the least - with a little more practice, she could be useful.

Pierre unleashed a great, echoing roar. The female bear fled, the injured male covering her retreat. The clearing was still again. He turned on Jamie.

"What the hell were you thinking," he raged, "Do you have any idea how foolish that was? Do you realize you could have been killed?" She began backing away from him, but she didn't seem frightened. He realized he was still using his attraction. He ignored this - he didn't want her to be afraid - and continued, grabbing her shoulders. "Unless I instruct you, do not go anywhere near an animal so dangerous. Did you honestly think you'd kill a bear on your first hunt? Foolish girl," he said turning away.

He could feel her sadness in the air. Or maybe disappointment? He shrugged it off and led her deeper and deeper into the woods, until they were so far in that almost all light was blocked out. Eventually they came across another clearing with a stream and a sea of wildflowers. "We'll wait here," he told her, sitting himself in the center of the flower field. He motioned for her to sit before him.

Once she was comfortably seated, Pierre closed his eyes and began her second lesson. "Never kill a female bear if you can help it. They are the ones who give birth to the cubs. They are also the ones who raise them. The male bears take a more hands off approach and are, therefore, not as essential to their way of life. Three male bears and twenty females can sustain a population - one bear can mate with multiple females. Three females and twenty males - not so much. Always go for the males."

When he opened his eyes, he saw she was much nearer than he thought she was. I guess where I told her to sit was a bit close to me. I didn't realize... He used his attraction to pull a fox closer. He tried to concentrate on remaining perfectly still - a fox was very sly, unlike a bear, and would run if he so much as blinked quickly - but all he could do was think about her. Her soft lips, the faint blush of her cheeks, the scent of her hair as it was caught by a breeze...

Pierre reached toward her and let down her hair, running his fingers gently through the long strands. The moon reached its highest point and made his skin glow faintly. His scent filled the clearing as it had before. Suddenly, he closed the distance between them and kissed her passionately. He could feel the heat of her blushing cheeks beneath his fingers. He pulled her closer, kissing her deeper. When he finally pulled away, she was breathing deeply and her face was pink. "My Jamie," he purred, pulling her against his chest and stroking her hair. "My only..." The fox was nowhere to be seen.

It was dark and Jamie couldn't see a thing. She met a rigid back and fell to the forest floor with a thump.
Okay, I've found Pierre, she laughed inwardly. He sat her down in front of him, seeming to restart his medication. She felt guilty that she ruined the previous hunt and sat perfectly still, slowing her breathing as to not to cause any disturbance. He glimmered in the celestial light, once again, and she noticed this must be some vampiric ability of his. After a while, his eyes shot open, taking her aback a little. He loosened her hair, letting it fall to her hips in playful curls. He leaned in with a kiss. Again, she tensed slightly, but relaxed almost immediately, returning the kiss with the same passion and intimacy. His presence overwhelmed her, but she enjoyed it. A small smile crept into their kiss before he withdrew and held her to his chest. She was out of breath and her heart raced while she was wondering if it still annoyed him. She would have scolded herself for the fuzzy feeling welling up in her chest if she were to realize what it actually was. Even now, while she was peacefully listening to the absence of his heartbeat, the fear pierced at her heart.

Did he use the same trick on me that he used to attract that bear? Would he? Did he really mean it when only a few moments earlier he scolded me?
She felt inadequate in his arms, even though she wished to be nowhere else. Crawling unto his lap, she buried a chilly nose in his neck and inhaled deeply. She placed a warm hand on the other side of his neck, playing with his hair. Her lips found his immaculate skin and kissed it softly, slowly sneaking up to his ear and gently nibbling on it. She retreated down his neck to whisper under his ear.

"Pierre?" she thought about telling him how he made her feel, but disregarded it as a moment spoiler. She doubted she needed to tell him anyways. Perhaps he already knew, judging by his hearing and her overactive heart.
"What is the most delicious beast you have ever fed upon?" She allowed him to think and continued kissing her way down to his collarbone. She wished she knew what he was thinking and whether or not he shared the romantic excitement she felt towards him.

Pierre suppressed a shudder of excitement as she climbed into his lap and trailed her lips along his neck. He resisted the urge to act out what he was thinking in his mind, scolding himself once more for such inappropriate thoughts. He heard her heart racing; he smiled.

"Pierre," she asked, hesitating. He waited patiently. "What is the most delicious beast you have ever fed upon?" She resumed kissing his neck and frowned. Clearly, that's not what she wanted to say. There must be something she is worrying about, he thought. He decided to let her tell him what it was when she was ready. "I suppose it would have to be you," he teased, placing his hand on the small of her back and pulling her closer. "Second best would have to be the beautiful white stag. He allowed me to drink from him when I was new. I had refused to feed. I was starving. I came out here to die. He was... intelligent. He knew what I was and somehow convinced me to live."

He cradled Jamie gently, humming a soft melody from his kingdom. He knew she must be tired. Pierre stood, keeping Jamie securely in his arms, and began the long trek back. "We'll hunt another night. Tonight, you rest." He continued humming until they reached the manor. Just as he was turning down the corridor to her room, he heard someone call his name.

He turned slowly.

Rem fought to control her shock and anger as she eyed Jamie in Pierre's arms. He set her down and pulled her behind him. "Yes," he asked. She forced a smile back onto her face.

"I've been looking for you everywhere since and hour after sunset." Pierre turned away. "I've been busy. If you'll excuse me, I have some matters to attend to." She stared after them, seething. So the rumors were true... I'll have to make my move soon, before he turns her. I can't let them be bonded so deeply. I'll kill her, just as I killed that little brat from the ceremony.

Rem stormed off to her room, finding the box with the medallion. She began chanting over it. Soon, he'll forget all about you, little Jamie...

(Sorry it's short. I'm cooking. I may insert more detail later.)

Blushing at his response, Jamie felt oddly complete - as if, for once in her life, something was sincere. It was nice to have someone caring about her. Goosebumps tickled her skin as he pulled her closer.
The mysterious white stag were filed into the curiosity aisle of her mind and she tried to picture Pierre fighting what he was. With the knowledge of what James had told her, she could understand it, yet he was probably the best vampire of the bunch. Her eyelids felt heavy and his soft humming urged her to nestle into his broad chest, resting her head on his shoulder. She drifted off into a dreamy state that resembled some sort of half-aware slumber. She felt him carry her, carefully, back to the manor.

Her blue eyes shot open and every muscle in her being tensed. Rem's voice penetrated her guts and made her tremble. Jamie disciplined herself and forced a wave of serenity to wash over her anger and fear. She just needed to be turned as soon as possible, then she'd be able to tear Rem limb from limb. Her eyes bore into Rem's with all the cold defensiveness her heart contained when she thought of Pierre and Rem. Perhaps she was selfish that way - she wasn't planning on sharing. If Jamie could, she would have growled at the female vampire.

Jamie relaxed once she was out of sight and turned towards Pierre, relieved that he sent her away in an indirect manner, but sent her away nevertheless. She was pleased to find another jealous look upon Rem's face stored within her memory. It appalled her, somewhat, because it seemed to her that she would not give up so easily. Rem was going to put up a fight and with her studies and the dreaded Ordeal closing in on her, Jamie hated her even more.
Seriously? I have enough to worry about for now. Can't she wait until I'm at her strength? Or perhaps she plans to fight without honor...
She felt agitated, but recollected her thoughts as Pierre shut the door behind them. She took his hand and squeezed it, hoping he would stay a while.
She lit all the candles she had, which weren't much, but enough to get by without stumbling helplessly in the dark.

"I'd like to apologize for earlier," she started, snatching her night dress from under her pillows and making her way to the other side of the screen partition that separated her bathroom from the bedroom.
"For ruining the hunt," she continued, letting her torn dress fall to the floor. Picking it up, she examined the damage. She could just as well throw it away. The skirt was torn and it had a slit in the side of the corset. Her eyes darted to her skin that, too, was bruised and scratched from her little stunt. Sighing she pulled the dark blue dress over her head. The satin dress reached her thighs and ended in frills. She never really cared for nightgowns, but if a delicate night garment was all she had, who was she to object? Next, she ran a hand over her legs, making sure they were smooth and presentable. After pulling a comb through her hair, Jamie returned to the bedroom to stand in front of her dresser, looking for a pair of stockings to keep her warm.

"I almost forgot!" She hauled out a thick blanket from the bottom of her wardrobe and placed it near the screen.
"I promised James to bring him a new blanket and some consumable treats," she was afraid to mention the books he had requested. Did James really need to know his true identity? She knew how it felt to be lost and confused about one's origins and purpose in life - she has been wondering that all her life - but, somehow, James didn't seem like an adult to her anymore. He was just a kid that needed protection and nourishment. She yawned sleepily, but forced herself to stay awake. She didn't want to miss a minute just like she didn't want Pierre to leave.

Pierre watched Jamie haul a blanket from the wardrobe and set it down by the screen. She yawned. He put a hand on her back and led her to her window. He watched the moon in silence, thinking about all of the things he had to do.

"Tomorrow night, we must get you fitted for new clothing. Commoner human clothing won't do when you are one of us. We'll also have someone come in and change this room to your tastes. Once you are turned, you can move in to a bigger room or have a little house of your own on our grounds. Many people do." He turned to her. "You should get some rest. Good night," he said softly, bending to give her a light kiss on her cheek. He ran a hand through her soft hair and smiled before leaving.

Once in the hall, he made sure Rem was nowhere in sight and dashed down the stairs. Pierre plucked at his silver thread. It loosened and vanished into dust. He knew Jamie's would do the same. She was free now, and officially an apprentice.

He reached the square just before sunrise and turned right into the shadow of the bank. The inside was dark and made entirely of cold, black marble. Chandeliers were the only light in the long room. He approached the high desk in the front and looked up at a wizened old man. "I'd like to open an account for my apprentice. Transfer all of the late Lord Alan's funds into it."

Jamie's eyes followed Pierre's back until he disappeared around the door. She crawled underneath the covers, hugging her pillow - it was becoming a habit. The vampire world suddenly seemed glorious to her. Reliving the short night's experiences, she slowly drifted into a deep sleep.

She was in a forest - not one of trees and lush landscapes, but of gray buildings with long winding streets. The skyscrapers bend over her like giants peering down at a mouse. She could feel her heart racing and was sure it was going to run away from her very soon. She dashed down an alley, taking turns that she thought would take her somewhere, but didn't. She was looking for someone and did so desperately, but she wasn't sure who. Suddenly the gravel beneath her gave way to a pool of shadow. She fell...

In the blink of an eye she was standing again, positioned in some kind of dark void. She ran to find an edge - perhaps a wall, or pavement, or the edge of the world. Lost and afraid, she panted. She couldn't find anything. She couldn't see anything. A faint light fell on her, but that was all. She glanced at her feet and nervously realized she might as well be standing on air.
Another light appeared on the horizon. She ran towards it, but her feet were heavy and her movements slow. When she finally reached it, she saw him. Pierre. She smiled and ran into his arms were they stood, embracing each other for a while. She withdrew only a little to look up at him when he disappeared without warning.

"Pierre!" She called in horror. Then she heard laughter rising from the depths of the darkness beneath her. A cold shrill ran down her spine. At first the chuckle was heartily and seemed to be a reaction to some joke during a dinner with friends, but it rapidly became a snicker. It was sharp and cruel. Her wrist began to burn. It was the thread. The silver thread tightened around her wrist, cutting into it. Her vision zoomed out of her body to hover just beside her head so she could watch it all. The thread seemed to be dissolving into her arm and crawling up to her shoulder where it took a sharp turn and aimed for her heart. Jamie screamed of excruciating pain as the thread started to slice through her heart.

Pierre reappeared just beyond her reach.

"Jamie", he whispered and reached towards her. A small, pale hand with elongated nails were placed on his chest. It appeared to be pulling him back; away from her. The claw was attached to an arm, and the arm attached to a blonde girl with glowing red eyes.
"Rem," she whispered under her breath. Rem slid, gracefully (as if she had a reptilian tail instead of legs), in front of him. Her focus was on him and Jamie wanted to attack her, or at least chase the serpent away, but she couldn't move. Rem's nails trailed along Pierre's facial contours seductively. She licked his lips and he seemed to be enticed by them. The laughter returned, sharper than ever and the thread tightened even more.
"Face it, little pet. You have no chance."

"No," Jamie shot upright, breathing unstably. Her pillow was lying on the floor and her eyes were damp. The room must have dropped a degree or two, because she was shivering vigorously. Her hand flew towards her wrist, but failed to find the thread there.
"What?" She started to panic, clawing at her skin until it became red, but it didn't seem to be absorbed by her skin either.
Maybe it fell off, she lifted the covers and saw a small trail of silver dust. Her forefinger rolled it around while she thought of a possible explanation. Pierre must have released it, she came to a conclusion, but why?

Sighing with relief, she retrieved her pillow. This time she wrapped her legs around it too to ensure it wouldn't get away this time. A peaceful slumber welcomed her.

Pierre stared out the window into the sunlit streets, worried. He knew he should never have chanced it. Now he was nowhere near his estate and Jamie was all alone. He couldn't even be summoned now that the silver thread was gone. He cursed inwardly. He paced back and forth like a caged tiger and debated with himself. I need to make sure that she's alright. But why wouldn't she be? I have no reason to believe she's in trouble. Though, she does seem to always attract trouble when I'm not around... Then there's the sun. I could die if I venture out.

Finally, Pierre's heart won over reason. He flew out the door and into the sunlight, the vampires within the bank shouting in fear and surprise. The acute agony returned as his clothes began to smolder. He ran almost blindly through the square and up the cobbled lane to his gates. Once within his grounds, he took the shortest path through the trees; they blocked out some of the sun. It brought him little relief. He reached the doors and threw them open with a loud bang, causing the servants to jump. He sprinted down the corridor for Jamie's room. He paused for only a second to pat himself down, quenching the flames. Smoke rose up from his arms, his eyes were bloodshot, his hair mussed up, and an angry red burn mark marred the chest showing through his shirt. Still slightly panicked, he shoved open Jamie's door.

She sat up startled. Pierre stood there for a moment, letting the relief wash over him before closing the distance between them and scooping her up in his arms. "Thank the gods," he whispered, shaking. He scolded himself for allowing his imagination to run away with him and then tucked her back in, kissing her on the cheek. "I'm not leaving you again," he told her, "Go back to sleep."

He slumped onto the floor beside her bed and leaned his back against her bedside table. He could still feel the white hot fire burning within him. Closing his eyes, he concentrated on ignoring the pain to make it pass on faster. He settled on thinking of Jamie. He had yet to hear her laugh. In fact, he thought, I don't think she's very happy here. Maybe if she had more freedom to do what she liked? But what if she gets into trouble? And then it hit him - something better, much more intimate and powerful than the silver thread. Pierre would have to trust her completely to give it to her.

He quickly made up his mind. Tonight, she will have it. I'll give it to her, take her shopping, and then let her roam free. Then she'll be happy. He rubbed his face in exhaustion. He had never had so many feelings at one time; why did he feel a hint of sadness somewhere in there? Probably because Alfred wants to court her, as do all the other vampires, he told himself bitterly. It's unfair of me to keep her to myself. She should see all our world has to offer by way of mates and choose for herself. I can't selfishly place myself in between her and happiness.

Pierre formulated a plan. I will announce her apprenticeship and elligability. Tomorrow night through tomorrow morning, her admirers will come in masks and introduce themselves in the competition for her hand. I will slip away into the line and join them, offering her what I can. She won't know it's me. If she chooses me at the end of the week of courting, I know that I can make her happy. And make her happy I will, he vowed somberly.

Jamie yawned, holding Pierre with a sleepy grip. He was oddly warm and his voice soothed her, especially after the nightmare. She blinked, the lethargy draining from her system bit by bit. It felt wonderful to wake up to him. She smiled, closing her eyes. Her hand found an opening in his clothing. His skin was coarse and feverish. He tucked her into bed and the warmth left her somewhat.
"Pierre?" her brow furrowed in confusion. She spotted him at the side of her bed, trembling with his face in his hands and his clothes torn and burnt.

"What did you do?" she asked in horror, jumping out of bed to ensure that the curtains were tightly secured in place and to light some candles. She stumbled a few times, but regained her balance as the dizziness faded. She fumbled with the matches, but gave up after igniting two candles and rushed towards him with a lit lamp in her hand. She examined him closely and then felt her shoulders slump in relief. He wasn't gravely wounded, even though he could have been.

What was he thinking? I'm too afraid to mention the quill, but he should have let me help him. I suppose the other vampires would have hated him if he could walk in the sun. They would kill him - that is if they're power hungry. I'm almost certain that's the case with Rem. It's better that I keep the quill a secret then.
But why would he...?
Her mind explored scenarios that could have caused his irrational actions, but couldn't find any. Even though she was genuinely worried, his behavior was kind of humorous. She saw it play off in her mind's eye - Pierre barging in, burnt and exhausted, and hugging her for a reason that was completely beyond her.

"You know," she smiled teasingly at him. "You didn't have to go through all that trouble. You only have to ask."
She parted her hair from her neck, pulling it to the one side and exposing her gently freckled shoulders. She watched his eyes, now a murky gold from thirst, dart between her eyes and the side of her neck.
"It's okay," she reassured him in a whisper, pulling him closer. She closed her eyes as his lips caressed her skin. A chill of excitement cascaded through her body, giving her goosebumps.

Pierre traced his lips over her neck, taking his time. He was in no rush and every slight reaction she gave to his touch thrilled him. He pulled Jamie into his lap and kissed her lightly from her shoulder to her neck. He wrapped his arms around her, his hands finding the laces on the back of her dress. He froze and forced himself to move his hands higher up - he would not untie them, much as he wanted to.

He opened his mouth to clamp down on her shoulder and stopped himself. He couldn't bite her without turning her. If he wanted to drink from her, he'd have to cut her again - not bite. He explained this to her, whispering in her ear. She nodded; he withdrew a small silver knife. Pierre stared at the flickering light reflecting on its surface, sighed, and dropped the knife. "I can't drink from you, Jamie," he told her, "I can't."

Pierre buried his face in Jamie's neck and pulled her closer until there wasn't an inch of space between them. Unconsciously, his hands found the laces again. He tried to force himself to ignore his baser instinct, but was having a difficult time of it. What are you thinking? You can't take advantage of her like that. She would never forgive you. He couldn't fool himself. His hands trembled with the effort of restraint. The emotions were too much for him. Pierre took Jamie's chin in his hand and pulled her face toward his urgently. He unleashed his frustration in a passionate kiss before placing her on her bed and leaving the room.

He closed her door behind him and slumped to the floor noisily against the opposite wall. Why does she always make me feel like that? He stared at her door, part of him wishing with all the heart he had left that the door would open; the other part wanting it to remain shut... for her sake.

She perched on her bed with her legs bent on either side of her, pouting slightly.
Why did he leave? She sat there for a moment, her heart still racing and it seemed to her as if there was some heater in the room.
Oh. She giggled to herself and washed up quickly. She pulled on a long green dress. She didn't really like it, because it was too light to prove any real contrast with her hair and skin, but it will have to do. She didn't bother with her hair and went to the door, the dress trailing on the floor behind her as she purposefully forgot about shoes.

Jamie opened the door slowly and saw Pierre was still there.
"You can't go about like that, Pierre," she called him back. He looked up at her, but didn't move a muscle. Sighing, she picked up the silver dagger he left on the floor and went to sit next to him. It slid across her skin effortlessly, creating a vivid line of deep crimson blood. She held her wrist towards him, placing her other hand on the back of his neck. With it she massaged him gently, telling him all the way that she didn't mind. She was ready to force him if he refused.

I understand that he doesn't want to hurt me - or whatever the reason - but he has to. He has to heal, doesn't he know that?

Pierre tried to remain resolute but eventually gave in to his hunger and her gentle urging. He pressed his lips to her wrist and drank deeply. Instantly, the fire within him died. His shoulders slumped with relief as he continued feeding on Jamie. Once he regained his strength, he forced himself to pull away, kissing her wrist as he did so. He leaned his head back against the wall.

"I... I should tell you," he said hesitantly, "Tonight will begin the week of courting... for you to choose a mate. I will not participate, of course. As soon as the sun sets, we will go to the shops and fit you with a proper wardrobe," he noticed her light green dress for the first time. He reached out and felt the fabric, slowly sliding his hands up from her waist and around to her shoulders. She looks like a vampire already, he decided with a pang of sorrow. How can I let myself do this to her? He sighed and lightly placed his hand on hers, not wanting to meet her eyes.

"You'll begin your lessons this week as well. It's the prefect time - the nights here are longer. You won't have much time for sleep. You'll have breakfast, lessons, lunch, lessons, courting and dinner together, and then an hour or two of sleep; you'll have to meet with each suitor. As is tradition, they must all remain masked until you choose on the final day. The man that you decide has won your heart will be the one to turn you."

Pierre looked up into Jamie's eyes, moving his hand to softly brush her cheek. "Choose well. There are many who would love to spend eternity waiting on you hand and foot to make you happy; just be sure they are worthy of that pleasure." For the first time, he didn't care if his eyes showed his sorrow. That would help fool her when he began courting her under another identity.

He wouldn't let her go without a fight.

Jamie withdrew from his touch, laughing bitterly. It was fleeting, but hung in the silence like a thorn of a rose. Her gaze were now fixed on her bare toes, peeking out under her dress, with her knees hugged to her chest. Her eyes were blank - as if she had died inside, but in truth she was confused, scared and very much hurt. She had yet to make up her mind about love, but there was no time for her to ponder on what it meant to her anymore.

There is only power and ambition, she reminded herself, but everything seemed so worthless without him.
"I thought you were going to turn me?" She looked up at him, afraid to meet his gaze, but doing so nonetheless. She didn't wail about it, only pouted a little to create a playful atmosphere to hide her disappointment.
"You will teach me though?" she did her best to hide her soul. She tried to forget what he said. She didn't want to say goodbye which is probably the reason why she was scheming for extra time to be with him while she could.

I know I have to, and I know if I wait it will only hurt a thousand times more, but...
She sighed, fighting back the tears.
Crying exposes weakness. I won't go there again. She tried scolding herself, but couldn't keep her eyes from becoming watery. She rested her forehead on her knees, letting her hair cover her as if it could shield her from the inevitable.

She would have to give each masked suitor a fair chance, but she'll play it hard. She would make herself as impossible to please as she could. She planned on giving them a really hard time, creating a little test of her own to distinguish those that will persist and the liars with a weak will to pursue their desire. She would also have to protect herself - she could not, by any means, get emotionally involved.
Jamie swallowed the sting reality. Of course Pierre couldn't court her, she told herself. He was of royalty and she was only, well, a previously pathetic human slave. What was she thinking?
Her hands combed through her hair as she leaned back against the wall, staring at the ceiling.
Oh, how everything is so beautifully and elaborately decorated. It is in such a contrast to the feeble hearts and traditions of this world - the glorious irony.

"Why is it that all vampires need to be courted? Is being single seen as a shame? Why only a week? It's so... soon.
My friends sent me on a blind date once. Only once," she smiled sadly at the memory.
"The boy was about two years older than me, but by far less experienced. I was twelve. His innocence was somewhat charming." She shook her head as to refrain from wandering from the point.
"He was wearing a blindfold," she twirled a strand of white hair between her fingers, seemingly lost in thought. She felt sick.
"This is much like a blind date, isn't it?" she asked the ceiling. "Except they can see me this time, but I don't know who they are. There is something glorious about traditions - like a beautiful tragedy."

Sighing heavily, she stood, not waiting for a response from Pierre. She realized, with great difficulty, that she had to let him go. The sooner, the better too.She looked at him, her eyes soft yet not betraying any of her emotions.
"Could we start the lessons now?"
