"Its fangs would be very helpful," he said, "with the perforation of certain leaves. Our omnivorous make-up, as you know, is not quite as suited for that."

"Why, it really is the most perfect herb-helping pet."

Death was ready to explode. Only an idiot like his mother could think statements like that made any conceivable sense. He jerked up from his carefully maintained languid pose and snapped "for Motherfather's sake, this is ridiculous!" He reached over and pushed the hapless cub's limb, pawpad up. "It can't pick herbs with those paws, baby or not! And if you're expecting it not to consume and throw those herbs up as soon as it does -" he paused, because his mother was the very idiot and she was the one who was giving it away... "Well." He concluded, sourly. "It doesn't work that way."

It was very hard not to die laughing.
"Ah, Death, I hadn't thought of that at all."

"I suppose you are correct," Cry neatly collected her introduction, "the limb configuration has not the propensity. And oral restraint would be difficult to train."

"A cheetah isn't really the best pet for you, then, Cry."

"It appears not. Perhaps a foxbun or somesuch would be rather more helpful where herbs are concerned."

"A cheetah suits a traveller like mother rather better - or perhaps, a hunter...a fighter." She quirked her head to signal her capitulation.

He did not miss it. "Someone like Death, perhaps."

The deathglares had turned to unwilling desperation - these two menaces were very good at pulling it out of him, and unfortunately his impulsiveness could rarely avoid falling into the trap. Despite his self-restraint, he blurted out rather undignifiedly: "YES. IT WOULD SUIT ME."
After a moment of silence, he rapidly added. "Someone like me. Or - or maybe Parlay, he runs all those gambling rings, debtors might come after him and he could use a cheetah." Yes, yes, he had to tone down that eagerness. Impress upon his mother that he did remember the existence of their other siblings. Not seem too depressingly keen. "Or Cut Bait - she might need a protector to follow her along."
And that selfishness crept back into his words. "But yes. It would suit a....a fighter. Very well."

Dark was not the quickest on the uptake. She would be the first to admit that, in fact, she was rather...gullible. But she was not entirely dense. She wasn't clear on the nuances of what had just transpired, but the air of innocence exuding from the two, and the uncharacteristic linger of her headstrong son's eyes upon the mewling cub - that was more than enough to convince her. Dear Death, so fearless, and so proud...she had not guessed he would long so for a pet. Ah...
"Why, I think so too," she smiled, "would you like to keep it, then, Death?"

Usually he would shrug, take it casually and graciously, with a "if you insist," but these shenanigans had gone on too long for him to rescue the shreds of self-respect he'd already lost. Instead, he pronouced, tight-lipped, "Yes. Please. Thank you." and winced at the mockery he could feel exuding from Cue and Cry.

"Well then," she laughed, feeling quite at peace, "it's yours."
And that, was rather that.
