“I can think of several,” Shen said. “Each of them generic and entirely unoriginal, but always a solid fallback. I don’t know if I have any customized nicknames, since I’ve never lived around one person long enough to get one from anyone besides my daughter.”

He switched off the topic of nicknames and onto the previous track Marleia had brought up. “It’s not a bad thing to be serious-minded and think in terms of efficiency. I’m pretty much the same way.” He looked outside at the storm, childhood memories swimming to the surface of his thoughts. “I was a bit like that even as a kid. The other kids liked to complain that I talked like an old man, but they always liked to have me on their teams cause I was really good at thinking in terms of strategy.”

Shen glanced back at Marleia again. “It never hurts to have fun every once in a while, but it’s funny how when things get serious all the fun types seem to look to the serious ones for guidance.”

Marleia smiled slightly at Shen's story of his kithood. "Certainly sounds like something I can relate to with my siblings."

She nodded in agreement. "I feel it is important to try and balance the two. Which I suppose means that once all of this is over, large amounts of fun will be well-deserved." She paused for a moment, wondering. "Honestly, though, I don't know what I would want to do for fun at the end of this. For some reason, nothing comes to mind."

“Well there will be easy eating for some time,” he pointed out. “Trees with anything edible growing on them will be knocked down, or the stuff growing on them knocked down instead. These islands aren’t completely devoid of life, and some animals are going to die in the storm. Likewise, some fish are going to be washed ashore. That means hunters or gatherers aren’t going to have to work very hard, and you’ll have to eat all that fast before it goes bad.”

Shen shrugged. “When people are well-fed and idle, generally they start getting playful and games just break out. I imagine with a family as large as yours that there might be a lot of games and exploring once all the chaos is sorted out.”

He himself was more the kind to go exploring. Figure out what had happened, what in the land had changed. Sometimes you found interesting things that go uncovered in the process of all the wind and rain.

"Oh yes, I hadn't thought of that," Marleia said, considering Shen's words. "The aftermath of something as terrible as a storm is surprisingly.... nice, for lack of a better word. I mean, I suppose as long as it isn't too devastating. But I suppose storms never are, for the islands that our tribe usually inhabits. I believe we have enough precautions there."

Marleia's mind wandered back to her siblings. "You imagine correctly, I believe," she responded. "Many of my siblings are the type to play around like that. The rest of us do explore, mostly for strange foxes who may have found themselves stuck on the islands during the storm. I suppose you would fall into the category," Marleia added that last part with a slight smile.

Shen snorted softly. “More like I got pinned down on one of the islands during a storm, since I was already here when the thing kicked in. Maybe for the best since there’s not a whole lot of shelter on the mainland where I swum here from, otherwise I could very well have fallen into the category of “washed up”. If I was lucky.”

He thought about the long swim it had been to get out here, and that was when the weather had been calm and the currents and waves in the ocean at normal levels. In a storm, with everything being whipped about with all the high winds, if he didn’t drown before he reached the isles he more than likely would have missed them altogether and gotten swept out to sea. The islands might have seemed big while on them, but they were nothing more than tiny dots in the great vastness of the ocean.
