It was interesting, though probably coincidental, that only men found themselves struggling with the riddle, as it was that only women were unable to cross the moat. Had Sailor Aquarius been there, she would have been fascinated by the results of the first two challenges, launching into a long discussion of gender roles. Instead, those who made it onto the stairs had only the dull sound of stone grinding against stone to occupy their minds as the stairs sank, settling with a thud before any real destination had been reached. There were only more stairs, joining neatly with the ones they rode, with no end in sight.
THE SOUL’S DOOR
The stairway ended far below-ground, opening up into a larger chamber than the previous one. They didn’t see any more stairs ahead, which was a relief; they couldn’t be sure how far underground they were by now.
Nonetheless, somehow the room they were in wasn’t dark as they’d expected: beams of light sifted in through a few small, fist-sized holes carved high up in the ceiling; then bounced off of several small, lacquered pieces of gold metal carefully placed around the room, creating a peculiarly beautiful lattice of bright angles that filled the space. This light was just enough to illuminate what lay ahead — a door with no handles, and seams too precisely fitted to pry open. This was the next obstacle, then.
The room above, the whispery riddle room, had been bare, quiet and contemplative. This one was considerably more ornate. The door that stood in their way was curved, concave and then convex, and covered in a hand-painted mosaic of colorful tiles depicting various scenes that looked like Aquarians of old at study, or performing experiments, or showing their work. Here and there, the mosaic was incomplete — several tiles of oblong shapes clearly missing.
One of the pale beams of light in the room was angled directly toward the mosaic door, exactly illuminating one of the gaps where a tile seemed to be missing.
There was a stack of dusty, unused tiles piled in one corner on the floor, and next to them, a pile of small brushes, a few stoppered jars, and some thin blue sticks of chalk. The jars had probably held paint at one time, but those who opened them discovered that, after so many long years of disuse, everything had dried out into uselessly solid, colorful clots at the bottom of each pot. The chalk, while slightly dusty, seemed to be in working order; and although it looked more like it was used by builders in marking the backs of each tile, that was better than nothing...
[PLAYERS: You must paint a tile depicting Aquarian life (as best your character can guess at it) and add it to the mosaic to advance, or the door will not open. Using the art program of your choice, and the blank tile image provided above, decorate a tile you think fits in with the Soul’s Door mosaic and post it along with your post. Roll a 10-sided die to determine whether or not your tile fits snugly into one of the empty spaces on the door.
If you’ve correctly completed a tile, and your diceroll is successful, the mosaic door will swing open just long enough for you to sneak through to the other side, then slam shut again. The force of the door slamming shut will knock your makeshift tile loose, where it falls to the ground and breaks, and therefore cannot be used again by anyone else. If your mosaic tile does not open the door, then no tile you make will force it to open — the door found your sense of artistry to be wanting. You must turn back.
If you rolled a 6 or higher, your character has successfully opened the door (the higher the dice roll, the better their attempt fared). In the event that the dice favor low numbers, one or more characters may be able to sneak through with someone else- Olmequarius will roll for this, if it is necessary.
IF YOUR CHARACTER IS ADVANTAGED IN CREATIVITY, you only need to roll a 5 or higher to successfully open the door.]

Once they hand descended into the new, much nicer room, Callum felt like he could take a breath. The previous room was so small, and this one was so spacey in comparison. Once he understood what they had to do, Callum picked his brick and chalk and settled into a corner far from others. He wanted to keep his design a secret. Callum had very little drawing talent. Really, he basically had none at all. But his mind was a strange thing really, full of weird ideas of what might have happened in the past Aquarian realm. He couldn't get over the fact that these people were experimenters and none of them except the Sailor existed anymore. So he drew the first thing that came to mind: a stick figure Aquarian running for their life away from a dangerous man-eating plant they had created and or discovered. The piece fit nicely into the wall. Standing back, Callum admired his work. It must have been very creative and accurate, because the door slid open and Callum slipped in through to the otherside.

Stairs. There were so many stairs, really, but Joshua found he didn't mind. There were not so many of them left now, he noticed... Just an handful. He was the first surprised that he'd gotten this far, honestly. The door was a mysterious thing - first the black-haired teenager looked for an handle, to no success. That was when he noticed the missing tiles. Oh no. Oh god no. Yes, what had to be done was obvious, but Joshua was dreading it. See, he wasn't an artist... at all. Unless drawing plans counted. Any other type of drawing ? Ugggghh.... Okay. Well. He tried the paints first, but they were dried out - long before any of them came here, really. Which left the chalk. Well, it was probably better that way. Less of a mess. There was plenty of scribbling, and when Joshua did dare to go up toward the door, he did his best to hide the hide his tile as much as possible. Because... well... He definitively wasn't going anywhere on an art scholarship. The door, however, either took some sort of pity on him, or saw something in the representation that went beyond it's execution, because it opened, just enough, just long enough for the black-haired boy to slide in. Then thankfully the tile fell on the floor and shattered. At least everyone else wasn't stuck looking at it.

Keren genuinely had no idea how they used to live on Aquarius, and the existing tiles weren't giving her any clues. Scowling, she picked up a piece of chalk and began to draw. It was basketball. Gladiator basketball, because see, here were all the spectators and there was a guy in laurels up in the stands and everything. Look at this ******** basketball, isn't it amazing. Unsurprisingly, Keren could not get her tile to fit - but just barely.

If there was one thing Marienrode had never been confident enough at, it was art. Also, the studies of other cultures; creativity was far from her strong point, leaving her with gardening and being half-thesaurus to recommend her. What even lived in the desert?... Well, giraffes lived on the savannah... same basic deal, right? When she slotted the mosiac tile into place, the door slid open just wide enough for her to skitter through.

((GO MOUSE DRAWING. BAM..... and it would get a two. OTL. Well, no one said Mary's talents were in art...))
Mary picked up the chalk, and found a tile. She thought for a moment before starting to draw her drawing... which was mostly stick lines, with a stick person. Had she been able to write a flowy passage about something, the wall probably would have opened.
As it was, her creativity was not in the drawn arts, and the door knew that. She glanced around as people slipped through the wall and stared at hers. Maybe it was just slow, or couldn't understand her drawing. She waited and waited, but nothing opened.
"... No... not now... not when I've gotten so far... please..." she said to her tile, holding a hand against it. She visably sagged on the ground. She couldn't turn back now. She'd gotten this far. How... how oculd it just end like this.
Why just her? Why couldn't she go too? Was she just too abnormal for the door? Or was her inability to draw people the only thing that kept her here?
She didn't know, except that she felt incredibly lonely again.

Flannery was not an excellent artist, but she was good with fingerpaints and stuff, and it wasn't in her nature to be discouraged by these sorts of obstacles. She settled down with a piece of chalk and a tile and very quickly began to draw. After all, what was more sciencey than a t-rex in a lab coat? For some reason, the door slid open when Flannery fit the tile in. The door, apparently, had no problems implying ancient Aquarius was Jurassic Park in space. Flannery thought that sounded cool.

The moat and the steps were challenges with simple, straightforward solutions. Getting from point A to point B, or answering a riddle, were simple enough, even if they weren't easy. The Soul's Door was less objective, but just as merciless as the others, not afraid to bar someone from passing if it found them lacking. Of the thirteen who started the journey, only four passed through the door, to the next- and final- test.
THE GAUNTLET RUN
Beyond the door lay a large chamber, broader and more expansive than any of the others they had been in. Most of it lay beyond a gate that stretched to the ceiling, but those who had come this far could see that what lay beyond the metal bars suggested a series of rooms.
In front of the gate, there was a large, carved sandstone head, with eyes of bright blue crystal, mysteriously glowing. As they approached, the rock of which the monolith was composed began to shift — the mouth moving to form words.
As before, they heard no sound, not aloud — but in their heads, they heard a voice nonetheless:
Before you stands the Gate of the Gauntlet Run.
To prove your worth, you must pass three tests: the Echoes of Home, the All-Seeing Eye, and the Enlightened Path. Time is short, however — you will have three minutes to show your mettle, acuity, and fecundity. If you cannot do this, you have no place here.
First, the Echoes of Home. To reach the future, we build upon the efforts of those who have gone before us. Lest you forget your history, you must speak its glory aloud: compose a poem of no less than eight lines about our lost kingdom, Aquarius.
Second, the All-Seeing Eye. In order to advance, we must know where we stand. Find the truth hidden in the carved writing on the floor.
Finally, the Enlightened Path. Innovation can never happen if we cannot move beyond ourselves. Summon the strength to rise above your own limitations to discover the knowledge that lies beyond.
One by one, the remaining civilians approached the gate. With a creaky groan, the gate lowered itself into the floor, just long enough for one person to pass through — then it snapped back up to the ceiling again with a resounding crack. Silence descended, as those still waiting their turn stood by, wondering what was happening beyond where they could see.
Three minutes passed incredibly slowly.
When they had ended, the carved stone head said, simply, It is done, and lowered its gate for the next person to pass through. They could not see whether any of those who had preceded them had made it through the Gauntlet or not.
[PLAYERS: You must run the gauntlet quickly — you have a total of 180 seconds to complete the run, or all doors ahead of you will close, and you will only be able to turn back. There are three sections to the Gauntlet: The Echoes of Home, the All-Seeing Eye, and the Enlightened Path. You should make a separate post for each section. Your dicerolls in each section will determine how quickly you complete the task in that section. Your score represents the number of seconds it took you to complete a particular task.
The Echoes of Home: Compose an eight-line rhyming poem extolling the virtues of the lost homeworld of Aquarius! (Your character must speak it aloud.) If your character is Advantaged in Creativity, generate a random number from 20 to 80. Otherwise, generate a random number from 30 to 90.
The All-Seeing Eye: Complete this word search! Circle or strike out your answers (your character may do this with their hands, as the letters respond to touch) and include the completed search with your post. If your character is Advantaged in Intelligence, generate a random number from 20 to 80. Otherwise, generate a random number from 30 to 90.
The Enlightened Path: Reach that high door way up there! Stack six objects found in the room so that your character can climb them to reach the door high above. Describe your character’s beautiful ladder from bottom to top (i.e. tell us what objects your character made use of). If your character is Advantaged in Athletics, generate a random number from 20 to 80. Otherwise, generate a random number from 30 to 90.
If the sum of all three dicerolls is less than or equal to 180, your character has successfully completed the Gauntlet and gained access to Aquarius’s storage complex. If not, the only available exit is a small, unlit side passage that winds for several minutes before returning to the gate.]

Callum was flabbergasted at what was beyond the mosaic door. Not from what he saw, but from the voice than rang in his head. He really, really hoped that he wouldn't continue to hear things afterwards. Hearing voices was a sign of mental illness after-all. Maybe space was getting to him after so long. Instinctively he called out 'Hello? " and turned to his puzzle comrades. "You guys hear this?"
Once the instructions were clear, Callum was quick to start his journey. He wanted all this to be over already! Get to the finish line and reap the rewards.
But the grey-ish blonde struggled in trying to come up with a poem based on everything he had seen. He wasted a good chunk of his time trying to properly sum up Aquarius life. Creativity really wasn't his strong point.
A bit nervous, he uttered his lyrics quietly :
"Oh Aquarius, so full of knowledge, Everyone here must have gone to college. They experimented in the pursuit of science But brains were not their only reliance. They had to be fleet of foot Or all their efforts would be kaput. And with creativity in their heart Aquarians were really smart."

Next, he moved onto the All-Seeing Eye. How was he suppose to make sense of the nonsense on the floor, least of all have his answers known? Taking a moment to scan the floor, Callum tried to make sense of what was there. In all honesty he couldn't really. So he picked the letters he liked best and then, like in that Indiana Jones movie,Callum traversed a path by hopping from carving to carving, tapping the 'letter' of each 'word' as he went. In the end the letters he touched made a funny path like this. ((links to answer!)) ((Time Used: 71 + 31= 102 Time left: 109- 31= 78 ))

After dealing with the strange carving in the sand, Callum figured he had lots of time to deal with building his ladder. He just had to figure out which objects to use... One improperly placed item might mean his tower would crumble under his weight. It was best to take his time and properly judge how to build his fantastic ladder to the high door. With any luck, Callum would find whatever answers he was looking for beyond it.
Callum started his construction by pushing a sandstone bench up against the wall to the door. That would be a sturdy base to start, and a convenient foothold. Next he stacked a large boulder (which he huffed and groaned trying to carry) and an equally large treasure trunk at opposite ends of the bench.
On top of those, Callum laid down a flat plank of slightly rotted wood. There were a few holes in it, but it seemed to be mostly all right. The plank was just long to enough to span across both the trunk and the boulder. Then he took an ornate circular cushion make of silk, the kind people used as make-shift seating. With that, Callum was getting much closer to the top. Just one more item. He had to choose wisely. Callum decided on a large woven basket.
As he shimmied up his ladder, the ladder shook a little bit. A piece of the rotten wood gave in and chipped off when Callum’s grabbed on. He touched another part of it, it stayed, but made a funny creek. It even stayed together under his weight. Granted Callum was ganglier then hefty, but he was still surprised his ladder supported him. It wasn’t until he reached the top ‘s ledge and the door, that the whole thing gave away underneath him. The thing came crashing down, but Callum was safe at the top.
He couldn’t wait to go through the door and find what well guarded secrets lay behind it.
(( Items used: Stone bench, boulder, treasure trunk, rotten plank, cushion, woven basket. Time spent: 102 + 54= 156 Time left over: 78- 54= 24 seconds to spare! ))

[There's no list- go wild, within reason! Rocks? Sure! Statues? Okay! Books? PROBABLY but I'm not sure how much help they'd be. Big screen televisions? PROBABLY NOT. If you're really unsure about a certain item, feel free to PM Olmequarius (or quote, if the item's in your post already), but as long as it's keeping in the general theme, it's most likely fine. <3]

Callum went first, and it took three minutes before the door opened again. There was no sign as to if he'd actually succeeded or not.
The first three minute wait had felt unending, so Joshua decided he might as well go next - if only to soothe his fraying nerves.
The first challenge was problematic. Poem ? Rhyming ? Oh boy. Definitively not his strong point, but there was no time to waste. Every second mattered !
"Uh." This obviously wasn't the poem. "Uh..."
"Aquarius, land of knowledge and science But yet to they not give their mind total reliance Fast of foot and creative of mind To sorely their knowledge they did not bind
Aquarius stood tall and true With intelligence as it's greatest virtue But let us not forget the drive to create and move With these skill, Aquarius had nothing left to prove."
It certainly wasn't the best, but it seemed to be enough - and Joshua pressed on.

The next room was the All-Seeing Eye, and definitively more Joshua's alley than the Echoes of Home had been. He did not know the meaning of the letters, of course, but he could recognize it as a kind of hidden word puzzle easy enough. Find the words, and trace a path. He didn't hesitate too long, touching along the floor to form the words on the carving - and moved on just as soon as he knew he was done. ((Time Spent - 48secs + 34secs = 82secs Time left - 180-48-34 = 98secs))
