STAGE 1 BEGIN! (Attempt 2)

What was one of Hel’s redeeming qualities? Stubbornness Dedication.

She was not going down without a fight, and she was not giving up! Luckily she soared right through the first stage again, her eyes set on conquering the second one. Hopefully there wouldn’t be any screw ups again this time! Hel liked to think she could learn from her…momentary lapses in judgment, but the lesson she really needed to learn was to not get cocky.

It would probably take a while to learn that lesson.

STAGE 1 GO!

Despite his dainty, ghoulish appearance, Calder liked competition. Being a young stallion, he was feeling those first sparks of teenager bucking in his system and just wanted to release it. Typically competitions were held in the clans like log throwing and ax tossing, but this seemed a very interesting adaptation to what his own kin did. He was very interested and flared his nostrils as he approached the starting line. Strength. Agility. Speed. Those three words defined a kelpie. Oh, he would destroy this obstacle course. He'd tear it to shreds.

Taking a moment to dig his hooves in to the dirt and take of his coat, Calder wiggled his behind up high and crouched to get a starting position. He just had to get some good momentum going and hit his marks.

When he felt the time was right and the wind on his side, Calder sprinted. He didn't hesitate. He didn't look back. he didn't second guess his footing. He just sprinted. The angled platforms did cause problems from the start, and his hooves nearly slipped on the slick surface, but he decided to just jump as quickly as he can to avoid that problem.

The log roll didn't bother him. How many times as a young colt did he swim up from the bog and hold to a dead log? As for the skitter jump, he did NOT like that. Jumping that high and then gripping two walls bothered him, and he was happy to move on to the next course. The same mad rush and wish of good luck moved him through the bridge blade and he continued to race up the curved wall until he reached the rope.

Calder hated this rope and grabbed it out of instinct before he noticed there was nothing left of the track and that his own momentum was sending him swinging off. Curling around the rope, he tucked his tail and gripped for dear life and jumped off as soon as he could.

He was glad that part was over.

STAGE 2 START!

The next series of obstacles were challenging for their test to strength, but there was also another major problem for Calder. Most of these were over pits and high up. Dangling high up. Sick-to-your-stomach high up.

The kelpie just managed to hang on for dear life on yet another crazy rope swing, and was dizzy by the time he had to grab a loose bar and move his way over a pit notch by notch.

Ladders. He hated ladders. He had only managed a few notches before he unwisely looked down, and felt his grip weaken. WHY COULDN'T THE GROUND BE CLOSER??!!

As if to answer this, his grip gave out and he was dropping.

That was the end of that.

STAGE 3 BEGIN!

Edel had taken a short rest between the second and the last stage of the obstacle course. She had seen how the last one worked – pure strength was key. She knew better than to rely on those miracles that had helped her get through the previous stages, but hey, Stage THREE! Getting up and doing some warm up stretches, Edel decided that if she went down here, at least she would try to make the best of it.

The buzzer sounded once more, and Edel – all too enthusiastic, began the first obstacle with such gusto that she completed it in such a short time. Perhaps it was too much, by the second obstacle it was clear that she had burned out a little, struggling to get past the Devil steps. She was granted a short reprieve with the third obstacle, which felt a little like the uneven bars event in gymnastics.

It was all too clear that the ghoul had tired herself out, for it took the frost demons a few paddles of the bicycle arm grips to concede defeat.

Splash!

Perhaps she would try again....later

STAGE 2 START! (Attempt 2)

No. No. No.

Failure was not acceptable.

The valkyrie was just streaming curses in a foreign language as she fell from an obstacle on the second stage. Still, she was stubborn determined. Hel stomped her way back to Stage 1 once more.

STAGE 1 GO! (Attempt 3)

If one should fail, try, try, try again.

Hel cleared through the first stage for a third time. There was no laughing, no smiling, and certain no grinning. No, all there was on her split face was loathing. Loathing and stubbornness determination as she marched her way back to Stage 2.

STAGE 2 START! (Attempt 3)

Hel cleared through the second stage for a second time. Still, there was no laughing, no smiling, and certainly no grinning. Still all there was on her split face was loathing. Loathing and stubbornness determination as she marched her up to Stage 3.

So Jack help her. If she failed again, she was going to have a terrible rest of the day.

The usually cheerful reaper was in a sour mood.

STAGE 3 BEGIN! (Attempt 3)

…There were no words.

Only loathing.

She only made it to the second obstacle of the third stage, and fell off of it.

Hel was quiet. Not a curse, not a yell and not a sound as she picked herself back up and stomped away from the Terror Warrior Challenge for the day. She wasn’t stopping because she was giving up, oh Jack no, she was only stopping for now because those were the rules. But mark her words, obstacle course. She would be back tomorrow, and it was going to rue the day it messed with Hel Brynhildr.

That was a promise.

(Fail! Will try again tomorrow!)

STAGE 1 GO!

Nahm always felt a little weird without the outer robe over his clothes; however, only an idiot would've tried this course with the handicap of trailing cloth to trip him up. It didn't look that hard. He bounded out of the start with high confidence -

- which was quickly dashed as his foot slipped on the last step, and he landed clumsily on the other side, scrambling up the incline, his heels bare inches from the water. O-kay then. Overconfidence would get him soaked, right. He approached the log with more caution, taking a couple of extra seconds to make very sure he was wrapped around the thing, clinging tight and sinking his claws in. Nobody had said anything about claws. Heh.

The log spun dizzyingly down its rails, but its momentum let Nahm smoothly roll off at the bottom, coming up onto his feet running already. This one was going to take some careful aim. He timed his steps and let the trampoline fling him into the obstacle; his hands and feet slapped against the walls - and held, and he let himself take a deep breath of relief. He'd been worried about that, but it seemed that the leather gloves he'd chosen for this had a decent grip. Through the narrow passage, out and down.

The bladed log didn't slow him down. Long legs let him take three rapid strides; the last step wobbled, the bridge spinning, but he'd cleared it, approached the tall, curved wall. His height ought to be an advantage here. He wouldn't have to launch himself as far as some of his shorter classmates.

It was harder than it looked. His fingers didn't even touch the ledge on his first attempt, and he cursed under his breath. The second try was better, but his fingers slipped, and he fell again. Painfully aware that he was losing time, he pushed off harder on his third try, stretched for it, and caught. This time his grip held, and he scrambled up and over, panting. Damn, this course was tiring!

The last obstacle was a little easier, at least; he got a solid grip on the rope, swung across, and hauled himself up. The warning tones started to sound as he scrambled over the ledge, but he shoved himself up and smacked the button to finish, grinning inside his hood. First stage stomped! Well. Cleared, anyway.

STAGE 1 GO!

Training training training. Hel seemed dead set in turning Mot into someone capable of defending himself. While it was true he was weaker than the average boil, he had his own strengths. They just didn't lie in actual.. strength.

When Hel suggested running this obstacle course, it seemed like a way more fun way of tackling a day of training than push ups or running. He was all for it.

The reaper was actually feeling good about this. In fact, once he started, he ran through each obstacle like a game. Approach it like a game and it won't feel like work!

STAGE 2 START!

Boy howdy, this was FUN! Mot was flying through the obstacles. Some were tricky, but that made it feel more like an adventure!

However, as he got to the metal spin, his hands lost their grip on the chain, sending him flying into the water below.

He spent the next while searching for his hat.

STAGE 2 START!

The sliding chain was troublesome, particularly the transfer from one to the next; but Nahm managed it all right, dropped to the platform beneath and jogged forward to the next. He'd rarely been so glad to be skinny; he had less weight to propel, less to pull him off the bar. It took quickness and momentum, and careful aim. He startled himself by completing the obstacle swiftly, with no fumbles.

He was going to be sore in the morning. He didn't make an extended, concerted effort like this very often. The thought distracted him, and the bar began to angle in his grip as it slid down the rails past the Salmon Ladder obstacle; he wrenched himself back into line with an effort, and hit the platform more clumsily that he would have liked.

The next obstacle was a repeat of the Skitter Walk. The sliding walls nearly tripped him into the water below, but he spread his palms flat against the walls and regained his equilibrium, dropping out of the obstacle onto the platform with only a minor wobble.

Nothing for the next one but to just jump for it. He came very close to falling; one hand slipped off, but he managed an ungraceful, stumbling landing, and kept his balance mostly through sheer force of will. The progressively heavier gates were mostly a matter of getting them far enough up to lift with his whole body rather than his hands; he slipped under each, and slapped the button at the end. Hopefully he'd get a chance to rest a bit before the next stage!

STAGE 1 GO! (Attempt 2)

Mot decided to try again, now that he had dried himself off. Admittedly, he was hesitant, nearly failing two obstacles, the last of which was quite reminiscent of his failed first attempt.

However, he made it by the skin of his teeth.
