Xiu's eyes widened at the mindflayer's reaction, and she was quick to hold up her hands and shake her head. "N-no, wait! R-riley, we...we're sorry! We were just..." Looked like it was time to tell her that they had just been trying to scare her and that they didn't have a scareling.
Taking a deep breath, Xiu glanced to the side and took Mitsu's hand, giving her friend's hand a small squeeze. "I mean, we....we don't..." Despite having taken a breath in an attempt to ready herself, Xiu's voice came out far softer then intended.

Riley was freaking out to put it lightly. Mitsu never would have imagined the mindflayer in this state of mind but it had gone beyond just joking. She was honestly spooked.
When Xiu started to speak up, Mitsu felt relief wash over her. She squeezed her friend's hand in return looking up at Riley sheepishly. As Xiu trailed off Mitsu was quick to chime in. "...don't have a scareling. It was a lie." While admitting to the lie felt like a horrible burden was lifted off her chest Mitsu still had a sense of shame for doing it. It....really wasn't the best scaretatic.

Riley straightened out, looking down at one ghoul, and then another. Her expression was penetrating, but enigmatic. There was no way to tell if she was livid or apathetic. But the tremble in her voice gave her anger away.
Lying is not the same as intimidating, ladies. She muttered low. I was looking for something a little more.. a growling sound came from her tentacles as they lifted up, pointed at the ghouls, and hissed. .. And a little less.. well. Whatever the hell you thought you were doing there. Also, nothing about what you just did involves actually using Fear. All in all, I'm not pleased.
Riley turned around, and looked like she was simply walking away from the two. Had they offended her so badly that she had given up the mere idea of teaching them anything? She'd even entered the study, which was out of their line of sight. It didn't look good.
But, a few moments later, she returned, with a white blob in each hand. This she threw at each ghoul casually, without care of whether they caught it or not.
They're cephalotos. She explained. They're friendly by nature. It will be difficult to scare them. But this you must do, and you must do it with Fear. Not with deception. The word sounded forced. Since you can't prey on their emotions. They have none.
They begged to differ, as they wiggled happily in the ghoul's arms, and tried to suckle gently on the skin.
Riley had not planned to teach them in this way. She had a lesson that was far more intricate, and involved a lot more interaction between them and her.
But now, she just wanted them gone.

Uh oh. Maybe that hadn't been a good idea after all. The Baku's ears and tail visibly drooped, her grip on Mitsu's hand tightening momentarily when Riley walked out of view. Ohhh, they had really messed up! What if Riley didn't want to teach them anymore? What if she hated them now?
In the end, the mindflayer did return (which earned a silent sigh of relief from Xiu) but she still didn't seem too happy. Xiu released Mitsu's hand only when something was thrown at them, instinctively reaching out to catch one of the creatures before it hit the ground. These were...cephalotos? The friendly little mini earned a small smile from Xiu, but her expression faltered slightly as she looked back up at Riley. She listened to her instructions about scaring the cephalotos with FEAR, giving a tiny nod to show that she understood. Then there was a pause.
"...We're really sorry. We're just...not very good at this, I guess." She apologized meekly, exchanging a glance with Mitsu before looking down at the minipet. Looked like they had new partners to practice with.

((Right, I forgot to mention, whenever you do attempt to intimidate the pets, just roll a d20. 1-9 means you fail, 10-14 means you intimidate it without Fear, 15-20 means you do it with Fear. You get infinite tries until you succeed with Fear. XD))

Mitsu's grip on Xiu's hand tightened as well, the feeling that they had truly messed up overwhelming her. Riley seemed very upset by their approach. Ears as low as they would go Mitsu's tail curled down and slightly between her legs submissively. She felt terrible, what if Riley wanted nothing to do with them now? Though could she blame her? She had just been lied to. Oh this was such a mess now.
The lycan was torn from her thoughts as Xiu released her hand and looked up in time to see something coming toward her. Scrambling she barely managed to catch the mini in a panic looking at the small creature in her arms. It seemed rather cute.
"Y...yeah we're really sorry, Riley." They had obviously disappointed her but maybe, just maybe, if they were able to intimidate these little creatures with their fear they wouldn't have let her down entirely? Mitsu wasn't entirely certain but it was worth a try.
Taking in a deep breath Mitsu looked at Xiu shortly, the ghoul's worry was mirrored on her unseen features. "R-ready to g-give this a try?" She was nervous, the tone in her voice made it obvious.
Focusing back on her mini Mitsu tried to think of what to do. How to intimidate.
((Ummm..........I pass fail?))

Riley gave Xiu a piercing look. You can't be good or bad at something you haven't even tried yet. Those attempts don't even count as trying to use your Fear to intimidate. Therefore, you cannot say you are good or bad at it, yet.
Her logic was like a cold shower, it felt terrible but it did it's job.
Mitsu's attempt had no trace of Fear in it, but Riley wasn't going to reprimand failures. She wouldn't say a word until they succeeded.

Stiffening slightly, the Baku nodded quickly at Riley's words, unsure what she should say. In the end, she remained silent, the nervous and apologetic not leaving her expression until she looked down at the mini she was expected to intimidate. O-okay, she could do this! Xiu took a deep, shaky breath, and stared intensely at the minipet, trying to focus her FEAR.
...Only she failed at that. She did end up making the poor creature a little squirmy, but only because of that unwavering stare she was pointing at it.

Mitsu continued to focus on the mini in her hands but all she seemed to do was make in uncomfortable. She knew she needed her fear but apparently she was unable to focus it like she should have been.

Xiu's next attempt...well, that went even worse. In fact, the mini seemed rather amused by her honest attempt, curling its tentacles around her wrist happily.
...She would succeed.

Mitsu didn't seem to be succeeding. Honestly all she was managing to do was make the little mini squirm in her arms. She was really going to have to muster up her ability to do this. FOCUS!

It looked like Mitsu wasn't having much luck either! Were the two going about this in completely the wrong way? Turning back, she mustered up her best glare as she tried to focus all her FEAR once more.

Continuing to try Mitsu was feeling a little deflated. Nothing was really coming of this. Looking over it seemed Xiu was struggling as well. Would they be able to pass this test?

Stop, stop. Riley regretted her cold, hands-off method almost instantly, but she let them fail for a while before acting on her regret. Failing was never a good way to learn confidence, but she was upset, and it showed. Here. I want you to attempt to try and channel your Fear. Do not think of this as intimidation, think of it as simply channeling your Fear to surround this pet. Once it feels your Fear, you will see a visible reaction. They will not be happy about it. That is the point which I want you to attempt to intimidate it. But first, channel your own Fear. Remember that you are made up of Fear - every inch of you is just particles of Fear. Use yourself, in whatever manner.
She reached out to take Mitsu's Cephalato, plucking it in her hands, and the wings behind her flared with bright light. The Cephalato stopped wiggling and started flattening, looking as though it was 'melting' in her hand. She stopped channeling her own Fear, and dropped the once more solid Cephalatos into Mitsu's hand.

Soaking up the new instructions, Xiu turned her attention back to the cephalato in her arms. So first, they were to channel their fear...? Having never--or rarely, at least--done this before, the Baku knew that it would be a bit difficult for her to get a grasp on the task, but she would do it.
No matter how many times it took.
