Thoroughly embarrassed - but relieved that Claire didn't seem to think it was too important - Aulus removed the flower from the tray and put it out of the way by the bed. "Looks like he brought you some water too," Aulus said with a nod to the glass. "I suppose he took additions to the order into his own hands... paws... claws. Whatever." At that point Aulus started to eat nachos, mostly so that there wouldn't be space in his mouth for his foot anymore. The movie, now that he was focusing on it, seemed like fairly standard fare; nothing to deep, nothing too much to think about, just a lot of fun with people infused with pokemon powers. Some of the special effects were really quite impressive....

A flower!

She chuckled as he put the flower off to the side, but shook her head lightly. "That's sweet of him, but I really don't want anything." With how sleepy she felt, she'd probably drop it or something. She did not want water all over her bed right before she went to sleep.

The sound of Aulus crunching on nachos (rather than put his foot in his mouth again) fell on deaf ears. While hazel eyes were directed at the screen, they slowly unfocused as Claire's thoughts wandered from the movie to other things. She was leaning back, head resting against the wall, her knees drawn up and arms wrapped around the Cyndaquil sleeping on her stomach while her brows furrowed every so often to varying degrees. What she was thinking of was anybody's guess, but it probably wasn't anywhere in the present.

Good. She really didn’t seem to think anything of it. He was going to sodding kill Char for this! Well, obviously he wouldn’t, he’d just ban him from tidying for a week or something. On the other hand he could be a reasonable human being and actually explain why the flower had been bad. Right, he’d do that. “Kay then,” Aulus shifted the water glass to sit alongside the flower and had a sip of his beer. Movie. Fresh homemade awesome nachos. Acceptable beer. Cute girl. Even if cute girl needed to be kept from finding out he thought she was cute it was a pretty good set up.

Oh yea, and he’d just been promoted too.

Once again, for a short while, that important fact had been totally driven out of his mind. That was probably ever sad given how hard he’d worked for it but all of the things that had pushed it out of his thoughts were beginning to lift his spirits too much to feel especially stupid about it. Claire had wanted him to stay. So he was just a friend she trusted to sit and watch overblown hero movies with her in the middle of the night, he still got to watch overblown hero movies with her in the middle of the night. Couldn’t that be enough? If this was it, wasn’t it better than nothing?

Aulus looked over at the hazel-eyed woman out of the corner of his eye, studying the frowns that flickered across her face carefully. She was either still thinking about whatever her nightmare had been or worrying about something else. She wanted him here. She might have preferred Lucas but he was good enough. She trusted him. That was something, something important. He should just be all zen and accepting and grateful for what he did have. It wasn’t easy. He wanted to tuck her tousled hair behind her ears and kiss her and make everything alright, and make her feel for him whatever it was he felt for her.

It wasn’t love but it was closer than he’d been to it since he was eighteen.

It wasn’t love, but it might become it.

What would he do then, if it didn’t go away but instead got worse? Would he be able to tell himself he should be grateful for her trust and platonic affection then? Would loving her, really loving her, make him less able to do that because he loved her or - because he loved her - would it be easier? He remembered Vivian, her laugh and her beautiful smile. Those sharp blue eyes, and her golden hair. Claire was nothing like her. Not quite as tall, curvier, just as teasing but not sharply so as that woman had been. That had been love, on his part anyway. He still didn’t know if she’d even liked him at all. She had said at the time that she’d only needed him for her cover – her cover for what? He didn’t know that either – but she’d spoken in anger. Maybe she had been fond of him in some way. Did he even care anymore, hating her as he did? Did a part of him still love her? He didn’t want to. He’d rather love Claire, even if she didn’t love him. At least there was trust here.... There was trust here, wasn’t there? It couldn’t all be an elaborate plan, it couldn’t!...

Aulus sipped at his beer and raised his eyebrows as the movie’s love interest was saved from certain death by the hero and kissed him with Hollywood passion and perfection. “Where did that come from? They’ve known each other two weeks and spent the entire time shouting at each other, but now she’s confessing her love? Flinging yourself into a relationship that quickly is stupid, they don’t even know each other. They’re never going to work out.” He’d flung himself at Vivian nearly that quickly. What a stupid blind kid he had been, must have been perfect for her purposes; naive and besotted. How many signs of her unfaithfulness had he missed? Well, he knew better now at least, but he didn’t want to let her poison him forever. He wanted to be in love again, but this time with somebody who loved him too....

He was barking up the wrong tree with Claire if he wanted that. Ugh. Why was life never simple?

"Mmh?" Hazel eyes focused again. "Ah, yeah. Considering the nature of most movies, two weeks is pretty good. Most of the time it seems more like two days," she noted with a small frown before covering her mouth with one hand as a rather large yawn escaped her. It really was a ridiculously short amount of time, she thought to herself, and was glad she hadn't started dating anyone so fast.

...but then again, she'd made plenty of other mistakes that were just as bad, so she really shouldn't talk. Err, think. Whatever.

Still, despite the unrealistic nature of the movie, it was still good - not amazing, by any means, but it passed the time with something besides being alone in the dark, and for that she was grateful. Actually, she was more grateful Aulus had agreed to stay - she obviously could've curled up in bed to watch a movie by herself, but it wouldn't have been much different than being in total silence with the lights off. Either way she'd fall asleep and probably have nightmares, but maybe if she wasn't alone for a while, they wouldn't be as bad?

Perhaps, but she was getting much too tired to think about things anymore. Her body was willing her to sleep again, but she continued to try and resist it. After all, the longer she stayed awake, the longer she'd go without nightmares, right? Right. Now, all she had to do was stay awake - but this would be a challenge in and of itself, because her eyelids had already started drooping without her really noticing.

“Mmmh, yea, I guess so.” It would be nice if it all worked like it did in the movies, if everything just slotted into place. Maybe it did for some people, the protagonists of the world who were charming and always had the right line and were unreasonably good looking. People like that probably had no problem at all. If he was somebody like that maybe he’d know what to say to her to ‘win’ her.

His brothers were almost that kind of person, they always seemed to know what to say to get girls to like them despite not actually being very bright. Maybe it wasn’t the chat though, might just be that they were good looking and attracted the kind of vapid bint who only cared about appearances. That wasn’t fair of him actually, almost all of the girls the twins had dated had been lovely; thick as they were but lovely, and no that didn’t mean he’d liked any of them. He probably ought to have but he'd always been too busy being angry to like anyone those idiots brought him, and anyway how could you like somebody who expressed genuine surprise when informed that the moon had anything at all to do with tides? Ugh. He didn't claim to be a genius or a fountain of knowledge but lack of such basic knowledge as that really annoyed him. Then again, a lot of things really annoyed him.

Finishing off the nachos and wiping his hands on the napkin Aulus settled himself down more comfortably and tried to focus on enjoying the movie rather than being annoyed with the hero. Lucky b*****d. He was willing to bet that girl wouldn’t be sucking his face off right now if he had the powers of a Catapie instead of a Moltres.

"Mmmh," was the only response he received - not that he'd said anything that even warranted a reply, at any rate - before Claire hid another yawn behind her hand. Her eyelids fluttered a couple of times as she attempted to stay awake, but after just a few moments of this, they finally, slowly, slid closed.

It wouldn't be long at all, as the movie continued with the hero running off to face his arch-nemesis who he would obviously defeat, before the sleeping agent slowly started to lean to one side. After a couple seconds, there would be a light plop, a resulting "quii!" and a head of black hair leaning on Aulus's shoulder.

...This situation was very familiar. He couldn't believe that last time he hadn't cottoned on to why he'd enjoyed being close to her so much. Slowly, cautiously, Aulus slipped an arm around Claire's waist. Settling carefully back against the pillows he watched the closing scene of the movie, but when the camera zoomed in on the couple kissing on top of a building with the sun setting behind them he picked up the remote and turned it off. Now engulfed in darkness Aulus sighed softly.

This was nice.

It was no kiss on a rooftop but it was a lot more than he'd expected out of the evening. Maybe they could make this a regular thing, although he doubted the sleeping on bit would happen often it would be nice to hang out with her and watch films....

Arceus he wanted to kiss her hair. That, however, would be an abuse of trust. Damnit. Foiled by his own gentlemanlyness - since when was he gentlemanly?! - Aulus closed his eyes. With Claire's warmth against him and the soothing sound of her breathing it wasn't long before he was asleep too.

The pair would have a peaceful hour or two before one of Claire's hands twitched slightly, her brow furrowed and a small frown slowly forming on her face. She shifted slightly, one arm slipping over her stomach, and her hand twitched again. Suddenly she shot upright with a gasp, hazel eyes wide and one hand clutching the sheets next to her. Luc squeaked in surprise before he dove under the pillow - or tried to, at any rate, since really he only managed to hide his head under it.

Claire’s shifting had already dragged him half awake so when she started upright he didn’t jump as much as he might have, and more importantly didn’t grab her or hit her or anything. Having pulled away from her in surprise Aulus shook himself fully awake and reached over towards her shoulder... and paused, and pulled back. Maybe touching first wasn’t the best idea.

“Claire? Y’alright? More dreams?”

Something had to be seriously bothering her to have another nightmare, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d had one so two in sucession smacked of 'not good' to him. Well he'd not had a proper one anyway; he was pretty sure everyone had low grade bad or sad dreams from time to time and he was no different. Dreaming you were back in school and had just failed everything more than anyone else ever had and were going to be sent back to kindergarten or that you were in the middle of a huge empty desert with nobody else alive in the whole world wasn’t fun but didn’t cause you to wake up with a gasp.... Should he hug her now? Feeling very uncertain Aulus reached out again, but left the decision about whether or not hugs would actually happen up to Claire.

Claire exhaled slowly as she rubbed one eye with the heel of her hand, a soft frown etched onto her face. Thankfully the reaction to this nightmare hadn't been as bad as the first - which could indicate the nightmare itself wasn't as bad. Still bad, of course, but not as bad. "Yeah, nightmare," she murmured quietly, brow furrowed slightly. When he reached out to her, she responded immediately and without any thought at all by turning to more easily wrap her arms around his neck and rest her head on his shoulder. Her eyelids were drooping again already, too. "M'okay," she mumbled sleepily, for some reason feeling the need to reassure Aulus she was alright. Or whoever she thought she was on - it was anyone's guess what sleepy-Claire was thinking.

“Good.” Smiling slightly Aulus gave Claire a gentle squeeze, easing them both down into a horizontal position. This was much more comfortable, for him anyway, he hoped his shoulder made a suitably comfortable pillow for her. Going to sleep in (well, okay, on) Claire’s bed with her snuggled right up against him. Earlier on this would definitely have been cause for gnurgh thoughts, but by now he was so sleepy that it just made him feel warm and contented. Beginning to drift back towards sleep Aulus sighed softly and smiled again.

Not alone.

It was a nice feeling.

Claire didn't stir at all as he laid them both down, but unfortunately his shoulder wasn't comfortable at all in that position. She shifted a bit - more asleep than awake at this point - and her arm slid across his stomach while she rested her head on his chest instead. Much better. A small, sleepy smile slowly spread across her face as she fully drifted off to sleep again.
