techpriest35 "hey professor do you know the difference between astronomy and astrology?" Professor Grey looked up at James, " As a matter of fact i do....Astronomy is the scientific study of the universe and the objects in it, including stars, planets, nebulae, and galaxies, Astrology on the other hand is the study that assumes and attempts to interpret the influence of the heavenly bodies on human affairs."

--It is about the two bears, Ursa Major and Minor. Major is a girl who was turned into a bear by Hera because she had an affair with Zeus and bore a child named Arcas. Minor is associated with Zeus' birth and is supposedly the nymph who cared for him.-- Annette wrote in the scribbly eleven-year-old handwriting she had and turned it in to Professor Grey.

"ok i wa just wondering are we ever going to do any f the asterology? since theres no real magic in what we are doing now and this is a school of witchcraft and wizarday ?" ((ooc i like the lesons as they are they suit the class very well but i was wondering why they called it astronomy in a magic school when astronomy has nothing to do with magic but with science and asterology has more to do wth divination style magic than with science ))

Ursa Major, the story about a poor virgin woman, Callisto, who has sworn to keep her virginity but the great god Zeus has his way with her. Zeus' wife Hera is jealous and turns her into a bear. Zeus turns Callisto into a constellation so that she is not killed by her son when he is hunting.
Ursa Minor, the story of baby Zeus being hidden in a cave so that his father Cronus wouldn't eat him. He is taken care of in that cave and afterwards overthrows his father like it's written in the prophecy and takes over the throne.
I love these stories. What do you guys think? smile

Your Final will be to choose a constellation and tell me the mythological story behind it, it will be worth 25 points and those who fail to do so will, lose 15 points for their house, you are not allowed to use one from the lessons and it is to be PMED to me and you will not only pick one you will have to write a simple paragraph (8 sentences), why that constellation was of any interest or importance to you

There are 88 constellations in the sky. 12 are of the zodiac.
51 constellations are in the norther hemisphere. 5 are: Orion, the hunter. Pegasus, the flying horse. Sagitta, the arrow. Ursa Major, the big bear. Ursa Minor, the little bear.
In the southern hemisphere there are 25 constellations. 5 are: Apus, the bird of paradise. Hydrus, the water snake. Lepus, the rabbit Mensa, the table. Phoenix, the phoenix. Volans, the flying fish.
And some constellations are seen in both hemispheres during certain seasons!
