He looked at her taken back. "No...I had never thought to try that before....But...." He had to admit that it was a rather ingenious idea. The rabbits would mistaken him for a deer or elk, and thus a vegetarian and would not run away before he could get too close to them.
"Why the hell have I never made that connection before?" He pursed his lips in a slight pout, calling himself a dummy in his head.

Riley shook her head, grinning and trying not to laugh since it would probably be taken the wrong way.
"Probably because it was just so obvious, it kinda got taken for granted. Kinda funny how most obvious stuff seems so unobvious until you realize it."
Still grinning, she walked up and nudged El. "So, wanna give it a shot and see if it even works? You know the land around here best and where we might find some rabbits. I'll make myself scarce so they don't scent me and run off, but I'll be somewhere nearby-ish."

]El blushed as he looked at her, "Erm....w...why don't you show me how to do it...that way I will have a better idea of how to do it." He nodded his head. The thought of doing something stupid in front of her made him jumpy. He didn't want to screw up and have her laugh at him or something. Not that he thought she would. But still. it would be best if he got a little more practice in before trying to do it.

Riley regarded El with her bright gold eyes, amused. "Alright then. It's really not that hard though, not if you've spent time watching deer."
The way she held her body perceptibly changed. She looked a bit taller, her legs more slender. She held her head perfectly still and straight, ears up and swiveling, then lowered her head to the ground. She took graceful steps, swinging her head over the grass as though considering it, then lowered her head further and lipped at it like a deer. It was a bit awkward since she wasn't at all built like one, but it was a passable imitation if she was ever playing a game.
Riley's head came up, a few strands of grass sticking from her mouth, and she moved her jaw in that odd chewing motion herbavoires did to grind their food. Of course most of the grass was on the ground where she pulled it up, but at least going through all the motions might make it less obvious she was playing something she wasn't.
Still faking the chewing she took more slender steps forward, ears always up and listening while she focused on the grass. She froze, snapping her head up to look off at some imagined noise, then resumed moving once she decided there was no danger.
After about ten more seconds she lifted her head and relaxed her body, eyes even more amused as she looked back at El. "See? Not so hard."

El watched her pretend to be a deer and marveled. He didn't know why, but the fact that she could mimic the creature so well was astonishing to him. He gulped after she was done and nodded his head. "I will...give it a try." He bit on his bottom lip. The last time that he had went hunting for a rabbit it had been a disaster. And he was afraid that it would be again.
But he wasn't going to let that stop him. For Riley he would at least try.
"Come on...the best rabbit spot is down this way." He inclined his head toward the south. Then he turned and started to trot that way. Yes he trotted, when he was trying to impress someone. And he was dearly trying to impress the vixen behind him.

Riley adjust her space and fell into a smooth, easy rhythem just behind El. She was quite proud of all her various speeds and worked hard to make each one the most efficent for the purpose need, using the least amount of energy to get the most output.
This particular pace she was using was for when Kiyo felt like taking a brisk walk. Of course a Guardian's legs were a lot longer than El's, so generally Riley used it for whenever she needed a speed between running and walking.
"Just to warn you," she said, voice so smooth she could have been walking leisurely rather than jogging along, "the deer thing. If you aren't practiced at it you'll spend a lot of your attention making sure it's correction. It's hard to shift from that into attack mode suddenly, so don't be surprised if you still miss even if you get right up on a rabbit."
She shrugged like it was a matter-of-fact. All life was practice, practice, practice to Riley.

El looked back at her. He had a feeling that he was going to need a lot of practice before he was going to be able to pull this off. "I will give it my best try...just....I don't want you to be too disappointed if I...can't manage to catch anything." He looked around, lifting his head into the air and sniffing. "This way." He cocked his head and then turned and headed in that direction.
Stopping suddenly, he looked at Riley and shook his head, crouching slightly. The rabbit hole were right up ahead. So now was his big moment to shine. If the butterflies in his stomach were any indication, he was going to screw this up. Taking a deep breath, El started to mimic the pose that Riley had demonstrated earlier.
He even started munching on the grass in the same fashion, chewing in a slow, leisurely manner.

Riley watched El for a moment. For a beginner he was doing alright. The movements were perhaps a bit off, but ease came with practice and it was a very good first attempt. El's own nature deer-ish look helped him.
She turned and trotted a bit back into the forest, making sure to stay downwind of the rabbits. She wasn't going too far; at least she'd still be within shouting range, anyway. But she was probably making El nervous by just standing there watching, and she might be able to find something interesting herself while El took his time "grazing" and drifting slowly closer to his prey.

El tried to ignore the fact that Riley was watching him. He needed to focus on the job at hand. Blending in. El he continued to shift, moving as fluidly as he could with deer like grace, he moved down closer to the rabbits. Nothing out of the ordinary happened, and he continued eating the grass in front of him. Even though it tasted gross, and all he wanted to do was spit it out.
But he persevered, for the sake of catching a rabbit and impressing Riley. Finally he was within pouncing distance, and just about the time he was going to make his move something spooked the rabbits. And quicker then he could recover, they all bolted running into their respective holes.
Frowning, El growled under his breath, kicking the dirt. "I knew it wasn't going to work. I'm not good enough with the deer mimicking."

Riley came trotting back. She paused briefly in case she might be interrupting something, but when she saw El standing alone in the small clearing she figured the hunt was over and resumed walking.
"No luck," she said, a bit of sympathy in her voice. She looked back over her shoulder, frowing a little, then back at El.

El spotted her and his ears drooped, then he looked at the ground frowning. "I didn't do a good enough job. I...Mm...I scared them all away." He heaved a sigh, sitting on his haunches. All his attempts to impress her were met with failure. No doubt she thought he was an idiot.

"Might not have been you," Riley said, walking up to El with a frown on her face. The frown wasn't for him though. She stared past him at the bushes on the other side of the clearing, eyebrows furrowing, then glanced over her shoulder again and up at the sky.
"Something feels....off. It's a bit quieter than I like a forest to be." She looked at El, still frowning. "You've been here a few days. Do you know if there's any large predators around, or if storms spring up suddenly here?"

"Off?" El looked at her, then turned toward the forest and listened. It was unusual for the forest to be as quiet as it was now, he had only been here about 4 days but he knew it was out of the ordinary for it to be so silent.
"Something is wrong." He frowned as well, then looked at Riley. "I think it would be best for us to get out of here. There are bigger predators in the area that might be heading this way. There is a cave not too far from here that could shelter us."

"Or shelter a large predator," Riley muttered, thinking and not seeming to realize her thoughts had escaped from her lips. She looked around the tree line again, brow still furrowed and gold eyes intense.
"You don't have bears around here, do you," Riley asked El without looking at him, eyes still scanning the trees. "I'd seriously feel a lot better if you thought this was just a storm."
Bears annoyed Riley. They were big, bulky, moved fast for all that they looked like they could only manage a plod. Huge paws tipped in long claws and their size lending to their strength, it only took one well-placed swat to seriously injure or kill. The bulk and fur made it harder to take them down too. Even with Kiyo around she prefered avoiding them; heck, the biggest breeds grew almost as big as Guardians!
She reeeeally wanted it to be a storm. Or a hunting cat. They were near mountains, right? Preferably a storm.
Riley kept herself on alert waiting El's response.

"Well...." El licked his lips nervously, "I haven't been here long enough to see everything so I have no idea it there are bears or not. I meant...I haven't seen one. But I wouldn't take it that there are none. Because you know that the universe would want to prove you wrong." He shook his head. The universe could be a b***h like that, not that he would say that out loud.
"Come on." He looked at Riley, "I think it would be best to get out of here for awhile. lay low in the caves." He started walking away from the eerily quiet forest.
